  • Not too technical. Lots of saw time. Tested a Husqvarna 455, 55, a Jonsered 2150 (Like Husqvarna 350 ), Husqvarna 550XP, and Brand New Husqvarna 543
    Just ran out of time! Want to do more in depth reviews of the saws and more technical video's on the differences and differences within model.... just too much to pack into one video so this is the intro to the 50 cc series....

    I can sure tell the difference between 50 and 60 cc class saws. My fifty is my Stihl 026 Pro. It has a 19 inch bar and a .325 chain. It will cut 20 inch stuff pretty well. When I get into 24 inch stuff I want a 60+ cc saw, although my 455 Husky will handle it pretty well with its 20 inch bar and 3/8 chain. However, I usually use my ms 360 (62cc) saw for 24 inch stuf, even though I do not like the added weight. It Carrie’s the same length bar and chain as the 455 husky, but has a lot more power. I can cut a 24 inch tree down with the 360 but usually switch to a smaller saw to buck and limb it up. Sometimes I grab one of my smaller MS 170, 171 or 180 for the limbing job and some of the smaller bucking. They can buck up to 20 inch if you want to push it.

    You are very right about not needing a big saw. During our visit to our youngest daughter's at Christmas I took my ms180 with me to cut up some storm damage for her. Some of the limbs were biggest than 12 inch, all red oak. Mowed through them ie a hot knife through butter with the 180 It was so cold that my hands went numb after about 30 minutes and I had to put on gloves to continue cutting. I cut up and stacked about a half cord of varying diameters in about an hour. Wading through that mess consumed most of my time.

    You guys are the only channel I know on youtube that provides this much information for comparing saws. If you can ever get hold of a Echo CS-590 Timberwolf and do a video comparing it to the 460 Rancher and some others that would be great. I can't find anyone that's done a video comparing those

    I can agree. I will be 74 in May and while I do not have a real problem with my bigger saws I do understand where you are coming from as relates to lighter saws. When I tote my 660 clone around it feels like I have a couple of bags of concrete in my hand. My new 455 feels closer to my ms 180 than the heavier saws doto my 271 farm boss and the 455 is lighter, and starts easier, than my 271. I won’t go so far as to say my husky 455 is my favorite saw but it will come real close and makes me look a lot closer at building a clone 372 than I did a few months ago.

    That 2150 spanked them all. I've built a bunch of those "hybrid" saws now. Some with stock cylinders, some ported, some OEM some AM. It's a very inexpensive way to get into a fast 50cc saw. And with a ported oem cylinder they're really good! You can buy them dirt cheap with junk top ends in reasonably good condition.

    I outgrew the 50 cc saws about the same time you guys made this video. Sure a 60+ cc saw is heavy but the do cut big stuff. I have always tailored my choice of saws by what I have to cut. Last month I was still cleaning up a bunch of big hickory for a friend and I carried my ms 440, 360, husky 455xt and ms 241cm. All got use, around a tank on each saw. I did get the 360 in a little dirt bucking some 24 inch wood, which took me three sharpening to get it cleaned up and back to my specifications. It was about 90+ degrees, so these saws got a good workout.

    This video has reassured me of why I still tote a ported and polished 371XP! Just don't have time to waste waiting on these little saws. If I was still a young feller I'd run a ported 395XP!😁

    I built one of those 2150/2153 hybrid saws as well...and it's become one of my favorite "small saws! Punches way above it's weight .... literally. It's a tick behind my actual 2153 but on extreme weather days either hot or cold it'll outrun my 2253.

    Big bars to cut down trees. You are right and 100% correct that a shorter bar can cut down or up trees. I have cut down many trees with a 16 inch bar. A year ago I had to cut up some 15 inch oak limbs at my daughters house with my MS 180 and it 16 micro 3/8 chain. Sure I could have bucked them up faster with a bigger saw a lot faster but probably not a lot easier. The limiting factor to me is saw displacement because I do not like running smaller saws over a tank a day. My big saws can handle the excess work but my smaller saws can get overworked if I use them over a tank a day. Overworked means a shorter life expectancy for the saw. Thank god that I am at an age where an hours work and a tank of gas I can quantify pretty easily.

    My main bang around saw is my ms-241CM. It is not the biggest saw in my stable but a real boss when it comes to work, because it is light and handy. I have cut so many trees down with a 16 inch bar that it's 16 inch bar does not bother me one bit.

    There is a need for a 50cc saws, I have always went to the smaller saws when first looking to buy a new for practical saw. But ending up splitting the difference with price and reasoning and getting a 60cc saw. It seem like the 562 and 550 are the way to go when looking for the big purchase and getting what is going to make the average guy smile. I just bought a 555 and am already thinking of getting a 562. But I could be wrong, the 555 might start good on every pull and the lighter weight just might be the best purchase every. I will say if I was going to by a 50cc saw it would be the 550xp without question, because at that size, power matters.

  • @johnclarke6647
    @johnclarke6647 5 років тому

    Bob is right. When it has to be cut, vernichtet. I will usually grab my ms 271, 261 or my husky 455 starts. They are all light enough and powerful enough to get the job done and their tanks hold enough gas to last an hour - about all I can cut at any one time. After an hour my legs and arms start to wear out and get wobbly, so it is time to quit for a while.
    FYI, the metal cap at the bottom will f a clamshell saw is called a crankcase.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  10 років тому +1

      Shindaiwa has hooked up with Echo at this point. Shindaiwa was always a solid saw (As echo's have been as well), so yes if you have a good dealer and they have the size saw you need, they have been solid saws. They used to have good power for their size. A 695 was a solid 67.5cc pro level saw that made almost 5hp, something like 4.8 They were right there with the 272xp's of that era. So a little Preventive maintenance and that saw should run as well as anything in its size class,

    I've got a 455 rancher...looking for a second saw so I can do more cutting before having to go back to a vise to resharpen. I love splitting wood, not cutting it, though I'm sure I'd like it more if I got a power bump on what I'm using! Husq 555 msrp is 640, 562xp is 699.95 msrp on some sort of promo from husqvarna. Which saw is better for the wood burning guy who isn't a saw tuning expert and likes to cut firewood for heat and not screw around with troubleshooting saws? Or should I be looking at a Rancher 465 for that dependable saw?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  6 років тому +2

      555 is a solid saw. I like them. A 562 has a little more snap, but not earth shattering, but if the price difference is one $50 bucks; I would have to recommend the 562. I like the smaller size of the 555. It's not a quantum leap from your 455, but it is more saw. AND can use the same bars. Both are small mount Husqvarna's Might call around and see if you can snap up a 2260 before they are gone. (Jonsered ) That would be my suggestion. A Jonsered 2260. They are being sold off at low prices too. Then you get the same small mount as your 455 with the power of a 562...

      whoa! I'll check it out!

    • @johncraftenworth7847
      @johncraftenworth7847 6 років тому

      so I called about 5 places within 100 miles and no one had a jonsered 2260. Many of the "official" dealers on the jonsered website informed me they don't carry jonsered at all anymore.
      I found a Husq dealer that is giving a 20 percent mail in rebate on a new 562xp just for xmas (must buy from the 18th-23rd of december)...so it'd be $610 after sales tax cost and after rebate is received. husq 555 would be $561 after tax/rebate. I saw an interesting saw on craigslist the stihl ms261cm for $400 used but nice condition, it's computer controlled, about 11 lbs 50 cc but stihl claims it outputs 4hp (my husq 455 only claims 3.5hp). I must say I like the weight number and the saw must cut as good or better than my 455!
      I guess the x factor is I deal with 20-30+ inch cottonwoods fairly often, that are irritating to cut with my 455 rancher if the chain is not perfectly sharp with proper depth gauge filing. I'm not a saw expert and have never used any other saw than my 455, but maybe I need more power than I've got to handle these cottonwoods?
      I dunno man, watching 20-30 of your videos and now I feel like I need to buy more chainsaws!!!

    Hey guys, I'd like to get your opinion here. I just bought a wooded, 3 acre lot that I intend to build my house and wood shop on, I currently only have a crappy little Husky 235 and a Echo CS400 that I've been using for brush and small trees, but now I have several large pines that need to go, plus one 2 foot diameter oak with a heavy lean that has to go. I need to step up my saw game, I'm really thinking I need something in the 60 - 70cc range. I don't have much money but I want something that will last, I've been looking at maybe a used 372xp for a decent price or a new 465 Rancher.. So, used pro saw or new rancher saw or is there another model you would suggest?

    ...I know what you mean about the older guys wanting lighter saws...problem is, when in their 50's-60's, they want these 50cc saws...all good for most of them, they'll do the job..problem is, when they reach their mid-70's-80's, these same guys start thinking these 50cc saws are big/heavy, and ask for something smaller/lighter....at that point, the only options are expensive arborist saws, like MS-200T or T540XP's, or small plastic gutless pieces of junk...and the 40-45cc saws are not usually significantly smaller or lighter than the 50cc ones....

      +Joar Flesjå The 543 is a little underpowered as compared to even older saws like the 242's. A 550 is a capable saw. Quiet surprising actually. Hoping to do a build video on one this month, just really pressed for time. A 550 looks exactly like a 562 internally ...just smaller. Those Sugihara bars not only are lighter but they also wear better....excellent bars...:)

All the 60cc variants (2258,555,2260,560,562) have quite a bit more power than the 50cc 550 & 545 series saws. Some like the lighter weight of the 560,2260 vs the large mount versions.

    hey guys really enjoyed the video. I'm new the saw world. have a wood stove I use to heat house and I'm needing something up to the task. went to husky dealer and he sold me on a 435 and it just takes forever to get thru a 20" piece of oak or even elm that I usually end up with. I think the 50cc power range would be better suited for my tasks. I like husky brand and we have a good mechanic here. Just cant tell if they are trying to just sell me whats on the wall or really trying to get me what will best suit my needs. I saw the 550xp and I liked the feel and wait of it but don't know if its over kill for me because its a "professional" saw. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. thanks for your time and the fun videos

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 років тому

      Not over kill. For similar money you can get a Husqvarna 555 which would probably be a better all around option in my humble opinion. Its a full 60cc's and priced usually within a few dollars of the 550xp. 550xp is a great little saw as well. They aren't leading you in the wrong direction. A 435 isn't anywhere neat enough saw for that...actually for "home owner" types either the 455 or 460 are also really reliable and maybe a little heavy for what they are, can easily handle 20inch wood. For you situation as you defined it..
      1) 555 For me the perfect farm saw/fire wood saw for the money
      2) 460 A bit heavy, but also 60cc's and rugged as a hammer
      3) 550 Pro level light and sophisticated, an "online" favorite for good reason. We have then where I work....
      4) 455 Block and tackle saw, been around forever. Heavy for the power.....will always start and will never quit on you. (Same as 460)
      5) 450 Cheap but actully a legitimate option.
      Would be my picks.....in that order. Which ever you can get the best deal on. I could argue the 550 into second place......but as an all around saw that get put away for a while....those plastic 455/460's are tough to beat, they deal with that "casual" environment better than pro saw where you do have to maintain them and keep those magnesium cases off the concrete floor..

    Clamshell designs are lighter than Pro saw designs. That is a fact. I have both and they will last according to how they are maintained and what they are fed. My 455 was built in Sweden. My only problem I had was that garbage chain it came with. Once I got rid of that pos - it is a good saw. I have cut lots of big wood with it but I keep my saws immaculate and maintain them in excess of recommended standards. That is the key to long saw life. If you cut with dull chains, and never touch a saw between uses, feed it garbage gas then you cannot expect it to last for very long.

    Stay away from Stihl 261. My Stihl 261 broke down after only 3 years of cutting firewood. Stihl said it was my fault because I didnt use the Stihl oil and alcylat gasoline! 026 was a much more robust saw and I had one for allmost 20 years and used shell oil and 95 gas mixed 2%. Not happy with the Stihl 261 and Stihl support.

      There is always a statistical chance of both bad saws from all brands and bad dealers....for all brands. I always hope the sample set of one doesn't color the relationship with either a manufacturer of even a dealer....although depending on HOW that sample issue when with a dealer can make or break a relationship..
      But to the Stihl 261's The place you want to hash out the Stihl 261's tech issues is over at forestryforum.com. the chainsaw area. There is a fellow there who thinks they are the second coming and knows them down to their individual molecules....:) LOL On this place I don't mind a real life experience shared with all, but really rather focus on solving issues after they have been identified. So what have you found to be the right direction for you?

    That 543 blew the doors off of that 550.

    Wait until that 550 gets broken in, muffler mod it, 16in 3/8 full chisel chain will close the gap with the Huztl even more.

      Hope so! Turned out Huztl had a slightly dinged up chain from the last maple tree & tap incident! Not so bad that I couldn't cut as you could see, but bad enough I felt it and upon looking saw the rolled over teeth on a section. Probably didn't cost me more than a second.
      The well broken in 2150 with a 2153 / 346xp cylinder was the top dog on that day....and yet again chain may have played a role there. Spike is checking on the demo 550 chain.
      Does the 3/8 on a 550 really buy you anything? Be fun to do a saw dyno video on that alone

      afleetcommand I run a small 235 for all my small limbing stuff with a Stihl RS chain. That's a hell of a tiny saw! I have a 550xp out of the box it's a dog! Run 20tanks through it with either Stihl RS or Oregon full chisel you will love that saw!!! That has been my go to bucking and small felling saw. My 372xp is my felling saw and that runs either Carolton full chisel of Stihl RS. Don't worry about that 550xp run it you'll love it!!!!

      Neil. Why would you put 3/8 chain in to a 50cc saw? It would be better to run .325 with 8 tooth rim sprocket than 3/8 with 7 tooth..... I hope we both are speaking about real 3/8 chain instead of 3/8 low profile chain....

      +ian “treejunkie101” martin True. And Husqvarna bought Redmax as much for the technology as anything. They were among the early developers of this X-torq technology now rampant in the saw world.

      afleetcommand In redmax there are design flaws that make them hard to work on. Ive never worked on any redmax saws though or really true husqvarna, its always been the poulan line. I hear from everyone the redmax designed the transfer ports are the hardest problem to work on in them. Is that true?

      +ian “treejunkie101” martin I haven't pulled one apart so I don't know....maybe we should do a video on those small bore Husqvarna roots... Redmax, Poulan. Early Jonsereds like the 455, and early Husqvarna's like the 42's..... :)

      Show what small saws used to be capable of and the quality. Maybe a comparison of the old air filtration versus the new seeing as thats what many people compare in different brands and how far along it has come
