How Florida Became So Conservative

  • Over the past 25 years, Florida has witnessed a massive political shift. Although it was once considered the largest and most volatile swing state, today, Florida is a stronghold for the modern Republican party, Republicans hold supermajorities in the state legislature, and Gov. Ron DeSantis is turning Florida into a hub for conservative policy experiments. But how did this happen?

People who criticize florida and Ron DeSantis clearly must not live here and or differ politically. As a Cuban-American I feel well represented.
There is no other state I’d live in given todays political and social economic climate.

Well said. I am a fifth generation Californian living in SoCal -- whose life has been destroyed by "progressive" lockdown policies during the pandemic. Those lazy, fear-driven, uninformed policies have harmed my family and set me back at least five years. I can't even begin to describe the anguish... I will never forget the day in March 2020 a co-worker sent us, his fellow furloughed co-workers, a photo taken at his local park of a basketball net bolted down so that the hoop could not be used. A male in his 30s, he was going stir crazy locked at home. So he went to shoot some hoops in the California sunshine -- on his own, at an empty park. During that same time, I sat home and watched your governor make the decision to keep beaches open -- and hold a 45-minute roundtable discussion about the knowns and *unknowns* about the virus. DeSantis refused to "contract out," as he puts it, his responsibility to his constituents. Other governors were lazy in blindly following whatever haphazard and arbitrary guidelines were provided by Fauci, the CDC, WHO and Big Pharma. I have since watched nearly every press conference held by your governor -- about the Everglades Restoration Project, improving infrastructure in poor, rural communities, parents' rights, support for first-responders, teachers and law enforcement... I could go on and on. I have watched his roundtables discussions with Cuban-Americans, like yourself, on facilitating *legal* immigration and on stopping the cartel, human trafficking, drug trafficking, the fentanyl crisis...
Ron is a true public servant. And his commitment to his state is infectious. I know most members of your Supreme Court, legislature, and even of the Green Algae Task Force 😉 -- while I don't have a clue who most of the political players are in California. They are MIA, using red tape as an excuse for shafting (forgive the crude term) their constituents. They preach "inclusion" and woke ideology -- while doing nothing at all. Ideology is not GOVERNING, it's talk, propaganda, total BS.
You are lucky gators, there, in Florida. Please cherish your governor for me... I am praying that he will wait until 2028 to run for president. He is doing so much good at the state level, while making an impact on the world stage, setting the gold standard. Ron LOVES his state, the job of governing and the time the job affords him with his family. So I hope his team doesn't pressure him to "seize the opportunity" to run in 2024... I find it interesting that Byron Donalds is supporting Trump. Donalds' support for Trump gives me an inkling of hope that Ron is leaning on the side of finishing out his term in Florida. On the other hand, the legislature just passed that bill enabling a standing governor in Florida to campaign for other office. Btw, Bryon Donalds is a rising STAR in the GOP. You all need to bottle and sell whatever you've got in the water, over there in Florida... 🙃
Ron DeSantis is playing the long game, I hope. The guy is meticulous, methodical, dots his "I"s and crosses his "T"s. What I wouldn't give to work for that man, task master that he is. I'd clean toilets in the Governor's Mansion to work for that man! Take care and God bless. ♥️🐊🇺🇸

But because the majority of the corporate press tends to lean left, they often highlight everything wrong in the state and ignore the good. The opposite they do to say NY and Cali, for the most part, not always.

Incompetent democrat state party and strategy compared to their efforts in AZ & GA or the Harry Reid machine they built in NV. Conversely republicans have been building up in FL long term, they expanded even into urban areas. During covid, democrats went to sleep while republicans kept up registering and outreach to latinos. Republicans built up infrastructure. Democrats parachute in during campaign season.
Also bare in mind, small leads in the popular vote can lead to disproportionate gains in the legislature in single member districts with first past the post voting system. Democrats are concentrated into fewer areas, republicans also gerrymandered the districts.
Republicans did win almost 60% of the vote to democrats almost 40% of the vote. So they did increase vote share. Republicans got 70% of seats and democrats 30%. That distorts votes being translated into seats.

First of all Florida I remind you is in the South, home of the Confederacy. It has a long history of anti-"Black" racism going back before the birth of the nation. Anti-"Black" racism is the backbone of American Conservative ideology. In recent times geriatric citizens started moving to Florida for the weather and the tax laws. The elderly are almost always conservatively bent. Now add to all of that immigrants from Cuba who identify as "White" Hispanic settled into Florida. They are fiercely anti Castro anything and deeply Republican with the GOP a bastion of Conservatism.
