Shotgun Shell exploding OUTSIDE a gun - What Happens?

- This video illustrates what happens when a shotgun shell accidentally goes off outside a gun. It is surprisingly innocuous.
This was done under very controlled conditions - do not reproduce this yourself.
Be sure to watch what happens with a .50 BMG is set off under the same conditions. • .50 BMG Shell explodin...
We will be demonstrating the Fith Ops trip alarm more in another video but check out this site. They have a lot of cool specialty shotgun ammo too! It was nice of them to send us this to test out!

I had a house fire, and had several thousand rounds of various caliber explode in the fire. I told the firemen before they went in the house, but they weren't concerned at all. Unconstrained shells exploding like this just dont concentrate the energy in one direction just as this video shows, and against their fire protection, there was no increased danger from the shells. I had never thought about it before - Good to see this video to see it firsthand and slowed down!
Dang
The casing typically becomes the main projectile that's what Brandon Herrera said any ways
Oh damn
this is not the real truth. if the impact mechanism had not been fixed and the bullet jammed, the shell would have flown away from the shot because of the physical reaction and because it is lighter. (used google translator)
@@MikeHoncho0811 WOW! Mine were in a basement, so there was no way out, but yeah, mine were all over the basement too. I kept a few just for memories.. bad memories, but memories none the less.. Coming up on my 8 year anniversary of our fire.
How loud is this? I was going to do something kinda like this and I'm wondering if I can get away with it in my backyard.
Its as loud as it would be in a shotgun.
I did a test once of firing a de-powdered,de-pelleted, primered shell in a shotgun. I was shocked at how loud it was! A flame even protruded from the end of the barrel.
You may have the neighbour’s calling the cops on you if you do a test in your backyard...assuming your backyard is in a residential area.
Hey bud, no. One fan!
Hol up
A bit more quiet then a 12 gauge bird shot
Wasn't expecting The backyard science in the comment section
I appreciate that you gave him cool looking glasses.
I would imagine those devices are more for making some noise to scare off an intruder in your home or to wake you up/scare of an animal at a campsite if you set it up with a tripwire, as opposed to actually hurting someone
I agree. This device is an alarm, not a weapon. The video is good but their conclusion presumes things erroneously.
@@josephnoneofyourbeeswax8517 I assumed there are special 'alarm shells' to go with this thing and using bird shot is not the right thing to do / illegal?
Generally speaking, one is not allowed to set traps for humans. In fact, trapping animals requires a license, as does shooting them. I don't know of any jurisdiction that issues licenses for killing humans.
@@kennethquesenberry2610 ok, so what you mean is that I better pack up my tripwire-and-Claymores assemblies from the backyard?
@@joostdriesens3984 I'm assuming your one of the good guys.
Surprisingly I've never seen this done on camera before. Very cool slow motion on this one. I used to use shotgun shells as exploding targets for my airgun/.22
Thank you very much! Do you plan to get one of the Chronos cameras from your fellow Canadian, David?
I'm in Michigan, but close enough to Canada. Sure would like a Chronos, I think there's still a waiting list though.
NightHawkInLight i watch. Your videos also...
NightHawkInLight what part im from lansing in az now
Be very careful. When I was 10 I lodged one in the crack of a log thinking I would split it. I shot it with my Crossman .177 and the primer went into my thigh. It burned like hell and hurt even worse when I dug it out. I had to keep it a secret from my parents or they would confiscate my rifle.
Safety squints on, mother on speed dial. Cooooooorntact!
lol
TAOFLEDERMAUS can you try this with buckshot and slugs? I know the results will probably be the same but ya never know!
TAOFLEDERMAUS you should try this with a steel tube cut to size that just fits the size of the exposed shell, I believe this would give the effect that is expected from this device
focus you fack!
Kevin Patterson I don't think it's intended design is to be a weapon, I think it's an alarm for use with special blanks (black powder I think).
Since shotguns are low pressure I wonder if you could make a faux chamber by wrapping the shell in several layers of duct tape.
Really cool to see this in slow motion! Liked as always! :D
thank you very much Jesse and Mike!
Omg hiiiiiiiiii
JesseAndMike wtf, what are you doing here? XD
Something to consider:
If you can get it to discharge with electricity, NO Holder, the weight of the shot exceeds the hull and the hull will launch backwards rather quickly, and that MAY be more efficacious.
I died at the *_super faux motion_* part lmao
Why?
Pure Slow Motion Why?
Pure Slow Motion ههههههههههههه
.
Is that a Zero Tolerance knife? Love those things
Always wondered about this. If you somehow set the primer off with a rock, or dropping it just right, nice to know it'll only scare the hell out of you, and probably injury you minorly.
Did they de-monetize you? I never got around to monetizing. Now I probably have unsuitable content. Dang.
I've had about 10 videos demonetized, like the evil bulletproof gummy bear video. lol
Interesting experiment video. Thank you guys
The parimeter alarm is used when camping, by using a blank shell or just a primer. If an animal trips it it can scare it off, or mainly it will wake you up when you are sleeping, so you can deal with what ever tripped it, if necessary.
This actually seems like a perfect system to scare away critters or potential assholes trying to break in.
My two cents. The issue with that is you have a steel retainer on the butt end held in place. All of the force is pushing against that retainer when the round goes off. If this shell was free standing it would have Nothing to push against that is stationary. The contents would have been dispersed more evenly in all directions with less force. Just thinking out load.
No, if it was freestanding the shell & brass section would have been launched backwards while most of the much heavier shot would have moved only a little bit forward
I love when you do these types of vids. You used to do them all the time! If you ever get a chance you should try making some paraboloids with water and getting some high speed cam footage.
A cartridge needs the build up of pressure in the chamber in order to detonate the powder. It just burns really slowly at ambient pressures and really has to be contained to ignite.
I've been watching your videos for a few years now, but I think you've done a sort of, face reveal more in the last month then in all those years of wonderful videos. Great vid, especially the *Super Faux Motion* shots. Always fun to see OG in a vid never know what he'll say. *:-)*
thanks!
Dsdcain and Danny . those three clowns have the best humor of near an channel I've ever followed.
I built a perimeter alert using a Rat Trap that pops two 209 primers. Lots louder than being muffled inside a shell! But, these are well built and if you just use an empty shell with primer, it would be a great alert for intruders! 🇺🇸😎
Danny AKA Triker Red, that's what these things were built for. We tested quite a few blanks and other "interesting" rounds. Wait to you see Jeff's next video!
Officer Gregg
An extra short shell with chili powder and an overshot card works pretty good too. 🙄. 🇺🇸😎
haha, yeah I loaded a couple shells with chili powder, glitter, magnesium, etc.
TAOFLEDERMAUS
So, that explains the burn marks on the head. LOL 👍🏻🇺🇸😎
Ha! That is what you have to load in the boobytrap, glitter filled shotgun shells.
No chamber pressure or bbl for direction.
A Gibsons disc Store burned down outside of my home town back in around 77.They had a large sporting goods section with a LOT of ammo.
We parked about 1/2 mile away and listened to fireworks for a couple hours.
What if you wrap tape around the shell? Something to reinforce it?
We weren't trying to make it work, just show what happens in this situation. I have enough to worry about besides us showing us committing a crime!
My sneeze would do much more damage and the spray density is incomparable.
Thats why you where a mask
Those devices are designed to be used with 12 gauge blanks, thats what I use in mine for out camping for perimeter alarm
It's pretty damn loud, but 460 Weatherby Magnum fired out of an 18 inch barrel with a muzzle brake is about the loudest you'll get out of a firearm. At about 170 to 180 decibels!
but what if you flex taped the casing?
I use to work at Federal Ammunition making shot shells.
a shot shell would go off every now and then, it happened at least once a month
I had a similar experience using Federal shells. Sometimes they would go off.
If you wrapped a couple layers of duct tape around the shell, it would probably keep it together long enough for the powder to ignite.
I saw this done with a similar device with a 7.62 x 39 round in it. It was an old Russian military round that had a steel cartridge case. The case didn't rupture and the bullet did quite a bit of damage.
So now we rap solid duck tape around the shell and see if it holds better. Thanks for the video. I’ve been curious about this exact setup.
Thin walled piping
wouldn't a small 3 inch barrel added to that device fix it? i mean it would help in containing the ignition of the shell wouldn't it?
This is one of those California ghost guns
lol yep!
If you were really trying to weaponize this technique you could just wrap the shell thickly with duct tape and it may provide a more forward effect.
Cool video. But if this was to really duplicate a misfire or hang fire of an ejected shell, shouldn't the shell NOT be constrained? Constraining the shell as shown in the video forces the shot and wad forward and only allowed to go side/side or up. Id like to see what really happens to an unconstrained shell (mimicking an ejected shell).
I've got some of these devices, you can use them legally for perimeter alarms with blank shotgun shells. I hope!
Are you saying that the shotgun collar from Saw 3 wouldn't work?!
In California, a booby trap designed to do harm can definitely get you arrested, and open you up for a lawsuit by whomever gets injured by it, burglar or not. You can however have "trip" systems designed to sound alarm, noise makers and such. A primer strike only would probably be okay, but if someone gets injured, you'd better have a good lawyer and bail bondsman just in case.
It is CA after all. They dont ever want the bad guys hurt, taxpayer though are expendable for some damn reason.
Actually, every state has laws regarding booby traps and spring loaded "trip" weapons designed to do harm, burglar or not. I just used California as a reference, but a simple Google search revealed that it's basically illegal everywhere.
These guys don't care, they took their testosterone pills and steroids this morning.
I actually agree with the law on this one. Its one thing to see a threat in real time and take action with a firearm but its another to have a round on a tripwire that could be forgotten about or kill an innocent person such as a kid meandering around, first responder or utility guy.
I Fought Piranhas vioat ne vute
Stick to ADT Alarm system was laughing at that remark! 😂😂
*_What if we buy a single barrel kinda thing and fix this thing at the end that would be a cheapest gun_*
Here in Phillipines we can make.a gun with only less than a dollar..its called air.gun..can kill a man with a single marble .
lol just put 400 grams of gunpowder in a tube, (iron tubing at the very least) seal an end by using a clamp to bend it together and then wield so the powder won't fall out. Also, to ignite, just stick a fast burning fuse in there to light it outside
Like a cannon, but it blows up on ye
Then you will have made a "sawed off shotgun" and you will go to jail for a very long time. The BATF & E doesn't screw around when it comes to enforcing this. They will come to your house, shoot your dog, you wife and your son - - just ask Randy Weaver all about it.
The vidjeo I just watched before this one... AvE. Krrrrrrontact!
Proximity alarms are meant to make noise and not harm someone.
Maybe next time place an iron pipe on the plastic part of the shell?
So, what I learned is that this may be quite effective if a short barrel were attached...
The VC used to make bobby traps with coil springs and such. Sometimes they'd wrap wire around the shell & include and nails. They didn't do much other than scare the hell out of people. I knew one guy who lost an eye to one. They made em out of rifle ammo too. They weren't any better.
Demonetizing videos by Google would be the equivalent of KFC deciding to stop selling fried chicken. Pretty stupid.
Yes, it is hurts the advertisers, Google, and video creators.
More like stop paying their employers.
Not even close to lethal, doesn't even break lenses of glasses. Few scrapes and maybe burn. Not too effective, especially if it hit an arm or butt or leg. The only value I see in this is causing momentary disorientation
Recently in the News. Apparently someone left one of these as a trap in a building the Police entered and while they didn't set it off it made the news, along with claims one or both Officers could have been killed. Don't recall the exact details, but I think it was a bust of some sort. Seeing this I thought I'd see how dangerous it actually was.
Military use to have something similar for a perimeter alarm. Kinda like a high powered party popper with strings on both ends to tie it off. Worked good on sliding barn doors
Came here after watching M set up shot gun shell Booby traps in Skyfall. I was guessing they wouldn’t do a lot with no hard containment like a pipe, but wanted to see exactly how dangerous they would be.
Would have liked to see it also with a barrel the length of the shell since this essentially blew sideways
All you need for those trip-alarms is the brass with a new primer... Just the primer is PLENTY loud....
I pute one in our shop-vice and set it off with a punch and hammer..
Just as loud as a full shell shot from a gun...
That would still likely ridiculously dangerous since they're not only basically almost in the line of fire but they also didn't have any solid barrier in between them and the shell going off...
Would be interesting to revisit this with the brass cased slug
I wouldn't recommend this - in otherwise do not try this at home!
But when I was teenager, I had some buddies, that had more guts than brains, but they would put bullets, as well as shotgun shells balanced in the crook of a tree, then from a distance of about 50 feet would take aim with a bb or pellet gun, shooting the primer location, depending upon the size of the ammunition & the skill of the shooter, it might take a couple tries, but generally resulted in an explosion & all the kids scattered before the adults showed up to wonder what the heck was going on...
I used to shoot the primers all the time with the BB. I did 30 06 9 mm 7 mm rifle bullets 30 30 . It would just make it pop sound it wouldn't even allowed as a firecracker. Or wasn't enough pressure if you put it in between a tree branch for the bullet to leave the casion. If you stuck it in the ground. Then the bullet would leave the casing and the casing would shred a little bit. Any bullet or shell has to have something around it for it to project has to have backup pressure. Once you do that. Then it's going to come out and it could come out from either end. I know how to make it leave both ends. I can make it come out at either end I want it to you top or the bottom or the sides. Once you learn how to do that you can make landmines. I will not give you the information how to do that. World's already bad enough.
Darin- USMC B- 85-93 , i am 47. When i was young i would set them on rocks and shoot them with my lever action 30-30 bb gun. And i will tell ya, it really honed my skills shooting wise. Damn ,the fun we had growing up.
People forget, but dad and grandpa used to buy dynamite and primer cord at the hatdware store. When i got responsible enough to hunt with a real rifle, i would take primer cord and wrap around a tree. Sit back about 300 yds and bang. Pretty cool watching a tree splinter up into a billion toothpicks. Then i had to cut the tree up and split it for firewood. Kifs these days dont know the fun we had.
Darin- USMC B- 85-93. so that was yer point? kids scattered? did they teach yer minimum writing skills in the Corps?!
Lol when I was a growing up this crazy neighborhood kid made one of these tripwire contraptions by cutting a shotgun shell or bullet sized hole in a rat trap and rigged a striker pin across the snap bar...
We did the same thing till a 38 we hit spun around a went right next to a freinds face . Well we stopped doing that.
As I understand these "perimeter devices" are NOT booby traps to kill or even main. The are an audible signal device. Like tying cans together on a trip wire and in that way they work perfectly., and it will scare the shit out of most people or animals.
I'd love to see that test with a full length brass shotgun cartridge (2-1/2")
It would still rupture but be more concentrated out the front imo
Love you guy,s someone else needs to start another deal like you tube so we all can get back to the basics and get away from there insanity!
I read about "set pieces" where farmers and other rural dwellers as well as the occasional city dweller would rig up an old sh0tgn or a steel pipe pointed at the point of entry.
A hundred years ago nobody gave it a second thought, "He shouldn't have been there" but today you'd definitely go on a long hiatus.
People would also cap the end of a pipe and score pineapple grooves to aid fragmentation.
They worked very well but wouldn't be tolerated today. Damn shame.
Would strengthen the shell with a metal tube be considered a barrel? Not attached, just put around. For like... fire protection by directing the power a bit better.
If you shot someone with it I can guarantee you that’s exactly what the DA prosecuting you will call your highly illegal modification of the device.
I always wondered if you could slip a length of steel tubing over the round creating a make shift barrel.
It would be nice to use a 12ga. signal flare for a parameter warning.
I seem to remember when I first saw those many years ago, they were advertised as "alarms", mean to use blanks not live shells. I can imagine after one of those going off, the unsuspecting bad guy would need a change of pants
Bullet shell flying through the last clip like a bad ass
Hi...I'm 8. I'm goin to twy this test at hoame.

Compression and barrel length are your main key components
Security system monitoring at my house provided by: GLOCK
When I was very young. In the beginning of the 80s.
I knew an old German trapper my father's right-hand. This was in Northern Canada.
Who had a trip wire with shotgun shells. For Coyote and wolf.
2:50 could you put a piece of tube on a round
Nah imagine turning a shotgun shell into a stick of dynamite 😂
My son dropped a 20-year-old Sellier & Bellot shell on the concrete and the primer went off. Curiously, it was also a misfire and did not ignite the gunpowder.
FAKE! The shell was a paid actor!
Using a blank wouldn't be a bad idea. You break into a home, hear a gunshot immediately, and turn and run. It also alerts you.
Now this would be wrong, but what happens if you slide a sleeve over the shotgun shell?
Brasil i like vídeo
I bought the system along with 6 loaded cartridges packed each with cayanne pepper...I was having a problem with a particular locker being broken into...after talking this over with some people I didn't go through it...I was scared I could be the bad guy here...opted for a wild game camera mounted inside bolted...we got the guy work got the guy really an had him removed before I could get my hands on him
I don't consider this a valid test as the shotshell was mounted to a stationary device. Doesn't really duplicate a loose shell
we'll use an unstationary device next time. Not sure how that would matter though, I'm not on your meds.
Brinks when you are away, Glocks when you're at the homestead. I sleep with my security system by my bed, my neighbors are substantially armed, our neighborhood watch is sponsored by, S&W, Ruger, Winchester, Ithaca, Mossberg, Colt, Browning, and many other upstanding protection devices.
Would be interesting to see how it works if you sleeved the shell with a piece of steel tubing that the shell fits in snugly
preasure wants the easiest path out, thats why even in a fire live rounds are not too much of a concern its when there is a chambered round.
See if this is good for home defense? Wtf is wrong with America?
Try that setup with the steel casing rounds see if they hold up better
I put a .308Win cartridge inside a pop can... yeah, pop can... definitely not a beer can, and then placed in the camp fire. It didn't have enough energy to exit the can. The person that asked me what happens if you throw a round in the fire was not impressed. Apparently I'm supposed to "tell me when you're going to doing something stupid".
And remember, they STILL haven't gotten any case law on remote activation defense. Sooner or later, somebody is going to use their doorbell camera or the like and turn on a defense weapon remotely. Even if it is a taser It will land in court.
And if you slide a short length of gas pipe over the 12ga shell ?
It needs some kind of barrel, to just put it on some sort of tripwire booby trap would be completely ridiculous. I seen other ones that had the barrel piece that screwed over the shell and that would probably make a difference because it would keep it from splitting open but still, to have something that’s not controlled by a human is a pretty bad idea
I think no matter what you load into it it should be facing upwards so that it doesn't harm somebody unintentionally
To be a thorough test, you should have tested it with various sizes and charges of 12-gauge shells. High brass vs low brass. I expected more of the powder charge to ignite, but powder does need to be contained to reach full power, doesn’t it? There isn’t enough containment with the plastic casing for the powder to burn under high pressure. Obviously, it’s the heavy steel chamber and barrel of the gun that makes cartridges work.
This basic principle applies in countless other scenarios where energy is focused and directed and the same energy has very few limitations for direction of travel, path of travel and increasing propulsion when the escape
path doesn't allow energy to evacuate as quickly as it's produced. until the obstruction is in front of the energy and escapes the restricted outlet. Pressure washers, turbines, compressors, combustion engines steam engines even a balloon filled with air that releases the pressure inside through a small restricted opening that propels it with pressured air escaping. A squirt gun uses the same principle physics as a real gun.
The sbotgun load disperses it's energy in all directions here, with the restricted contents exiting the path of least resistence. All forms of energy including momentum movement apply.
That perimeter alarm device is awesome it's too bad you don't understand what its for or how to use it
I know exactly what it is used for. Damn, just realized this video has over 20 million views!
Good for a trip alarm
Its going to petty much explode with no direction. A bullet is meant to be shot through a gun with a barrel. If you thtow ammo into a fire and it explodes you are just as likely to get injured by the shell casing as you are by the shell.
The glasses are not broken.Good quality!👍
If you never had the trip alarm attached the result would have been way different as the explosion pushed off of it
So it's kinda like having a medium sized firecracker go off...not deadly in itself, but you sure as well wouldn't want to be holding it in your hand.
As a booby trap it's illegal as anyone may set it off. Neighbors, kids, pets. You may get by using blank shells that fire in a safe direction. If anyone is injured indiscriminately you'll be liable. Check with local authorities. A friend got tired of burglars crawling thru a easily accessible window and ran a 240 volt ac around the inside of window. Another law enforcement officer friend visited an saw it. My friend took it down. Bars replaced it.
One time in welding school, I got permission from the teacher to put a primer cap under a TIG welder. BANG!
(It's not my fault he's Korean and said 'yes' without understanding a word I said to avoid admitting that his English, which he learned from a French guy, in France, is somewhat worse than 'bad'.)
My dad used to have a shotgun shell in his drawer. I used to hot potato it thinking it Was gonna explode
If you want to learn what happens if a shotgun shell or loaded cartridge goes off outside a rifle chamber read "Hatcher's Notebook" by Major General Julian S. Hatcher. He conducted many experiments like this. He came up with a way to ignite the primer with electricity so there was nothing touching the cartridge. He would place, for example, a shotgun shell in a closed cardboard box and fire it. The box would contain everything. Same thing with metallic center fire cartridges.
I know this is years late but... Just curious how it would do if the shell was put is a metal sleeve like a pipe. I would imagine it would be more focused forward but still a mess since powder would still not have a chance to fully burn and not enough barrel to direct the shot. Maybe a little more damage and still a bad idea to have to explain to a judge LOL
Good bear warning around camp
Would like to see a video with an pipe nipple or electrical conduit around the length of the shotgun shell.
