Thanks for doing the video Brian! Great info and thoughts. I am actually the creator of the Grant's Dirt Guard concept and thought I would clarify a few things - this design is actually different than the Chemical Guys design, by design, and I would argue superior in several key ways: one, the taller legs allow for a much better fit/seal in BOTH 3.5 AND 5 gallon buckets. The CG version will not even fit all the way into the bottom of most 5 gallon buckets, and it can be loose in many 3.5 gallon buckets. Also, their finger holds are way too small (shallow and narrow) and make it incredibly difficult to get it out of soapy bucket (especially when it gets wedged in a 5 gallon bucket). Lastly, their design actually traps dirt on the TOP of the Cyclone because they put rings around each funnel opening, which ends up trapping dirt that can be easily transferred back into your wash mitt if you rub it on there. Hopefully those details help :) -MK
I just bought the Har or Freight one last weekend. I saw it and it looked promising. Worked great and kept my DIY rinseless solution clean on top and let the dirty water sink to bottom. $4 can’t beat it. Don’t fall for the high dollar hype
DetailGuards grit guard is hands down superior to any other i have seen on the market and tried myself. The build-quality is much better, it sticks to the bottom of your bucket and the design actually helps the grit stay at the bottom and not suspended in the water.
That's really cool Brian. Thanks for posting. $5 for a grit guard is the best deal in the world hands down. They'll probably sell millions of them! The design looks pretty cool too! Team this up with a $5 bucket from Home Depot/Lowes/Tractor Supply/etc and you've got a great wash bucket for half the price or less! $10 all in..........OH YEAH.
I thought Detail Guardz was overpriced until I used one. That thing is the absolute best, especially for your rinseless bucket. For normal soap & water wash I use Brian Spitler’s method. 4-5 mitts/pads and no cross contaminating 🍻🍻🍻
i used original grit guards for years. I recently switched to detail guards and I do like them better. I feel like there is less dirt that can come back up because the way the holes are designed. I dont use the walls. I just use the bottom
Great breakdown FAB and I agree that people freak out about these little things too much. I am sure some work better than other and this new one from Harbor Freight should work perfectly for 99% of folks. You cannot beat the price that is for sure.
Solid vid with good info for people. To each their own, I follow Brian from Apex’s method. One bucket no guard, 4 or five mits. Dirty mits don’t go back in the bucket. Works for me
Nice summary of a seemingly insignificant subject, but some cars you absolutely need a grit guard because they are so dirty. My cars are older and I try to be careful to not add any more scratches or swirls so I use grit guards even though I know drying is the main reason for swirls.
So for an update on this as I watched it when I came out. I bought one immediately after. Made a bucket of absolute rinseless wash with the harbor freight grit guard and 6 of TRC Wolfpack towels. This thing WORKS. Little loose in the bucket but stays at the bottom and keeps the dirt down there. Also the chemical guys one is circular holed and doesnt have the feet to keep it off the bottom. But anyway. Thank you for showing these to me. I have since purchased 5 total one for each bucket
Your channel is the newest in my arsenal of making myself a better detailer. But I would also like to interject and help others as well. Hopefully soon I will be starting my own channel and entering the arena myself. I have two grit guards. Both of them have floated to the top. The one that’s a two part that you are demonstrating is pretty cool. What I do is simple. I wipe a panel with suds and mit. Then I simply spray it off with my pressure Washer to rid any grit. Then dunk, wipe, rinse. Works well for me. Thanks for your channel
lol you are so right about that. Don't over think it. Brian from paint society says that in all his vids, "Don't over think it, it's just paint." Great vid as always.
Thank you for such an informative and FUN video. I hadn’t given much thought to better home cleaning of car/pickup truck wash mitts. I have 60+ years of experience on this planet and am looking forward to washing my vehicles with an unprecedented confidence of not scratching my paint with my wash mitt. Keep up the good work! I subscribed two minutes into this, my first, video of yours. 😂
Couldn't agree any more! People way overthink this process😄 great video brother. That Harbor freight one doesn't look bad at all! 3 buckets, 40 buckets. Your not safe unless you use at LEAST 72 Buckets. 🤣
@Carlos Rivera You know, as Phil Miranda says and I believe.. the prewash stage is crucial.. if you do that properly there will be almost nothing on the paint. That's more important than 5 wash mitts and 3 buckets. In my opinion.
Hello Folks - don't over think the moment! Reminds me of the best bit of comedy ever on your channel: the intro to Megs HCW. "Oops wrong channel" . But probably best we don't revive that saga....
That's great find I always washed my cars with out grid guard tell they came out I used but then I watched some thing else I just use multiple mits dont need grit guard I felt a lil silly i didnt think of it
The HF grit guard was actually the first one I purchased.. I have 2-3 of them now including several other models including the dirt lock..IMO the dirt lock is by bar the nicest and I need to get the pumper for it, doesn’t float. The HF one worlds as well as any other cheaper model, but tends to float a little. For the price.. find a bucket it fits well with and you’re good.
Thanks for the tip on Detail Guardz. They're just on the opposite side of Toronto from me, can drive there in an hour. Will go check them out come spring.
Nice video of a good find. As you said in your video, it’s only washing the car. But as for the most of us as enthusiasts, and DIYers in our spare time, washing our cars is also therapeutic, which is enjoyable, regardless of the age of our cars. Great content as always. Regards from England, U.K.
To be fair...the fun for me is getting amazing results, and knowing my car paint is protected and maintained. It's not in splashing around in 5 gallons of water.
Honestly I've walked past there detail aisle like you said but I was in a pinch once and bought one of the Grant's drying towels. The other towels are something to level out your tire shine lol. But the drying towels aren't the greatest but I was surprised at how well they worked. Just something for you check out if you get curious. Oh yeah and the little foam cannon they have is pretty good too
Just bought the HF one for lil over $3, also just ordered the Turtle Wax Black Ceramic stuff u showed from TW site $29.60 for both polish & spray ,just got a black Durango I wanna try it on,have a blk vette but I just used Griots on that
What people don't realize, cause they do see dirt left over in the end under any grit guard, is that most of these cheap grit guards aren't doing as good of a job as you think. The problem occurs when you dunk anything in the bucket thats full of water, it creates a particular flow inside the bucket that kicks up all the dirt on the bottom, and shoots it straight up. If you're using the regular cheap grit guards that have straight walled cuts in them, that dirt will kick up right through them. However some companies have realised this is a problem, which is why you have these vortex designs, like in the HF Grants, Chemical Guys, or my favorite the Detail Guardz Dirt Lock (they really studied the hydraulics of the water and dirt when you dunk something in the bucket, and came up with their really innovative design. The design complexity, material quality, and results, is why Detail Guardz cost a bit more).
@@FABAutomotiveDetailing Yeah...one thing you helped with though is making sure I turn them sideways before sticking them in the bottom, so they don't get full of air and want to float. Thanks for that! I didn't realize that was the problem.
Had to laugh because my neighbors have learned not to ask me “what is the best way to wash a car?”. Because I can talk for an hour or more on all the different techniques, pros and cons, types of soaps, pre rinse vs not, well you guys know how long the list is ‼️ This year I have decided not to buy any more stuff until I have used up what I already have, New Year’s resolution‼️ let’s see how long it lasts 😂. 👍✌️☮️
Someone needs to make a grit guard for a 2 gallon bucket. I like using the smaller buckets during the winter when i can fill with hot water and go down to the coin op.
Fab you should hit up Markus Kleis and have him on for a stream or chat. You two actually seem like kindred spirits and he is hands down one of the chilliest, smartest, kindest dudes out there. He was with Meguiars for a long time but now he runs the detailing part of Harbor Freight. Every single move I've seen from them since he's been there has been an absolute home run. Some of the stuff I've talked to him about is awesome and I really think if he's able to even accomplish half of the stuff, it'll be a game changer for Harbor Freight, especially when it comes to smaller places and towns that may not necessarily have a place they can go to get certain things in a pinch. I think his channel on YT and Instagram is MKs Details and Deep Dives.
I walked into a Detail Garage (Chemical Guys) just to buy a few things. I probably would never go back. Manager was too aggressive and cocky. Too many to choose from, and they try to sell you the pricier products.
Funny thing is after I uploaded the video last night I was mad at myself that I didn’t include the griots grit guard with built in measuring cup. Thanks for watching
Hey Alex - you need to make sure you insert it sideways to release the air bubbles just like it shows on the packaging. You are welcome! I appreciate the info especially from the designer himself. It’s a great grit guard for sure.
Any chance you would sell this in the UK
Growing up in the 60s and early 70s we used leftover bath towels to wash and dry my parents cars, no fancy tools, great video, thanks Brian 👍😁
Powdered Laundry Soap...Yikes...and either Turtle Wax or my favorite was a tin of brown funny looking 'Classic Car' wax.
I remember using bath towels in the early 90’s. 😂 Thanks man
