    Another one for the bookmarks Gerry! This is the video I wish I had when I first started looking into cybersecurity. As someone who works full time and goes to college, I have to be selective with my "extra" time and $$. Getting guidance from a seasoned professional on great sources for building new skills is priceless, thank you.

    Hi Gerald, question for ya, I've looked at the PhD from Dakota state for the cyber ops path, I read the syllabus and course description for for each course and the required reading material and I don't see anything that I can't learn from elearnsecurity, offsec, and corelan. So, my question is what would you say the PhD has that the much cheaper certs can't provide?

    • @SimplyCyber
      @SimplyCyber  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Scott. Fun question. i read this last night and slept on it. There are a couple key differences. The level of depth you go into in the courses at the PhD level is a bit deeper and (at least at DSU) very current. For example, ROP was a somewhat newer concept for software exploitation, and JOP was just being discussed. These concepts were studied in the curriculum. You may not get that with the training providers until these concepts become a bit more mainstream.
      Also, some faculty are security researchers at DSU so you are learning and collaborating with the folks developing and finding new vulns / attacks.
      Having said that, the content, curriculum, and educators at the orgs you listed above could certainly do that as well, so its not exclusively a difference.
      Another MAJOR difference is the dissertation. This is a core requirement of any phd program and is an intensive research effort where you ultimately contribute new knowledge to the space/industry. My dissertation took 18 months, and was intensive.
      The outcome I'm proud of, but the key takeaway for students is learning the 'research' skill. It goes far beyond just googling a topic and reading about it. Its grounded in understanding objective data, how to find data, how to forumulate a research question specific to answer a well-defined problem, and how to scientifically justify findings. Its pretty great and I still use that skill today.
      Again you might be able to find an organization that teaches 'how to do research', and bypass a phd.
      The PhD didn't result in me getting more money at my job, or some access to something i couldnt get without one, but I always had a life goal of earning a phd, and I LOVE cybersecurity so it made sense for me to pursue it. I'm very happy I did.
      I hope this helps shed some light on why a PhD, and answers why going the training org approach is a good idea if it aligns with your goals.
      I also think (as a side topic) that Higher education in general is messed up and a massive reckoning is coming.

      @@SimplyCyber looks like he does live trainings that you must register and attend at the scheduled times and it says prices is $25-545 but to use on-demand training it's $200 minimum.

    • @SimplyCyber
      @SimplyCyber  2 роки тому

      Yes that’s right. Not all the trainings are pay what you can, but 3 of his are. The $25 and up live ones can actually be $0 if you look closer. There is that option. The non-live ones they bake in the cost of the hosting platform and staff to manage it.
