Yo You Are A Life Saver!!!! i paid $15 for a top quality HDRI image for my scene and it kept coming up black but after tweaking the overall multiplier it worked and i want to kiss you :3
Thank you dear for this amazing video .. simple an direct to the point .. i first watched in 2015 . and i always recommend it to my friends ... really am thankful
I have used two of your videos as reference for landscape architecture and find them very helpful. I really appreciate them, they are very simple and straight forward. Thanks
Arch Viz Camp I have one request of you,,, Im not big on 3Ds so I mainly model in SU and merge the scene into max. If you can do a tutorial on best practices I would appreciate it.
Wow! What a great tutorial!! I spent 3 hours keeping notes and watching your tutorial again anad again in order to understand it!!! I have migrated just recentlty from Max 9 - Vray 1.5 to Max 2014 - Vray 3.0 and I am shocked by the changes
This video is a gift from God. You don't need any other source to know everything about Vray Dome and HDRI's. I was so relieved after watching the video and i got everything i needed here. Thank you !
Thanks the tutorial is really great and simple easy to learn from , i have an issue would like to ask you about when i use slandered spot light there is always a noise attached to the light in the rendering how can i get ride of it
I've got a little bit of a background in photography and I've found that an aperture of 5.6 , shutter speed of 1/sec & 1/30.0, and an ISO setting of 100.0 produces a good image and is a camera setting that you might use for the type of lighting scenario you're using.
Stuck on 1:44, I've tried to enable the HDR in my Viewport but its pitch black. I've followed your instructions perfectly but not sure what's wrong. Is there anyway to overcome this?
You dont need to change the hdri scale, I never do so. You can either hide the trees/houses in the hdri with objects such as 3d trees and houses or with a background plan with different panorama view with alpha mask to hide its own sky. Also you can lower the position of the hdri image inside the bitmap parameters. Make any sense? :)
Hi! your video is very clear and I followed every step. I don't know why but my sky looks very dark when rendered. It worked fine earlier until now after I create a new Vray Dome Light the sky is dark no matter what HDRI I use. The rest of the scene is well lit by my Vray sun and it looks fine in the camera view.
HelIo, I use vrayHDRI environment to create HDRI environment map but, viewport showing it as white color while use environment background is enabled. However the environment map is showing correctly when rendering. I’m using 3Dmax2016. Please help. Thanks.
at 4.17 you say "don't worry about the blown up sky we will deal with it later on." but you never mention it again. how do you deal with overblown skies when you need the extra light? or just use a vray sphere light or sun to illuminate the scene?
Hi, at the end of the tutorial I talked about replacing the sky image in Photoshop, using the alpha channel. So you can use the HDRI only for lighting your model, and add your sky in post production.
Niels van Haandel one way to deal with that, is to render your animation with an alpha channel sequence (so you will get an alpha for every frame), and use it as a mask to control the sky exposure in after effect or any other post software.
you can simply make your vray light(loaded with hdri map) invisible and load same hdri into ur environment slot( rendering>>>>environment>>>(check use map}). for good lighting control, link your vray light map to the vray light using wire parameter.
very nice thx for the tut it really help me because Im a newbie in v-ray usually I use mental ray or I-ray render but I got v-ray 3.0 and I really impress with it, thx again
During the entire quarantine period, I learned how to write soft at soft soft. TNice tutorials is not to say that self-isolation is a pleasant tNice tutorialng,
Can you tell me why put the HDRI image in both the dome light and the environment slot? Is the environment giving light as well as the dome? Wouldn't that double up the effect? What if I wanted the background with a white color. Do I just un-check the environment? Thank you great tutorials!
Thanks a lot for your tutorials! They are always well made and absolutely clear even for a limited English speaker such as myself. You are doing a great job by bringing a grain of enlightenment and sharing your knowledge. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. I hope that this work will be continued and we'll see the new tutorials.
Hi from argentina!. a question, why you dont use vraySun or skylight?, sorry to ask this but it is became a maze on my head as to when use one or another way.
Hi I want to ask If I have rendered a product in Keyshot, and then I want to create and environtment in 3DsMax does it could be done? I mean does the color that I have make still exist,or I have to remake it in 3Ds I am a new user, I want to learn step by step
Great Tutorial, liked the video but i do have one question.Whenever i check ''use environment background'' HDRI displays as pure white in viewport, no matter what values i change, it stays the same.solution you gave to Rafael didn't help, still pure white.NOTE:ONLY IN VIEWPORT!when i render it's normal
Arch Viz Camp Yeah i did that, but it's still white, it's like it can't display anything but that, like it's not down to settings, but Max takes it as a solid white.I will try tomorrow again
Great tutorial sir! One question though, how did you set up your viewport/camera so you can see the HDRI and its position (as you change its horizontal/vertical rotation) before rendering? Thanks a lot!
Thank you for this, sir. I was trying to light my scene using GI environment in the render dialogue, and didn't realize I still needed to create a dome light. My scene looks great!
Bro, i cant get the result. i followed every step but my render image and background is too dark. I placed dome light also. I use max 2018. Plz help me. Thank you. @John Petersen
Thanks for the tut. Bery well explained. But i have a question. everything is nice. I can see evetything on my viewport. But when i render i do not see the clouds?. Its just white. . Am i doing something wrong. Parameter are by default
AWESOME! I have a question, bcz about showing the background, I only have the option "show background color" and when clicking it, the backgroud appears in the color I have in the enviroment. I can´t see the picture of the HDRI. I have 3d Max 2012,. any suggestions? Thanks
Brian Chen In this video I used the map in the environment slot just so I could see the sun direction in the viewport. I turn the environment off on the final render.
Arch Viz Camp does this rotation of the environment then also control the rotation of the dome? im using vray for sketchup and the two are completely independent...of course I cant a background HDRI environment preview without using the REALTIME render engine to preview sun properties... I have a related question... I mapped an HDRI dome light and the render is beautiful. worked great...however...the dark horizon line across the glass frustrates me...is there a way to eliminate this? I feel like I should just be able to lower the vertical position of the HDRI...I tried making it a 'spherical' dome light, mirroring the horizontal. nothing... this may be hard to answer seeing as how im using Sketchup but VRAY for sketchup and 3ds max are pretty much the same...I find SU to be a watered down version of VRAY for 3dsmax... any help would be greatly appreciated.
Blake Chamberlain yes the dome light also rotates because you are rotating the original map itself under it's options. not the environment. and your second question regarding the dark line is something that also frustrates me. I have no clue how to move the map vertically. under dome modifier you can scroll down and click full sphere dome something like that and it will render the full image without creating the dark bottom portion. but then you might see grass or trees in say a city like chicago. What I do is I just try to use a different HDRI and some will not show that dark horizontal based on my perspective.
Blake Chamberlain Blake Chamberlain yeah, full sphere mapping in the vray light dome options. Also the other day I foud that the vray hdri map (not the common 3DS max one) has an option that goes something like "project ground plane" it produced some weird floor in my project but maybe is that what you're needing for your project. sry for english.
Great Tutorial, thank you very much! The camera seems to be locked and cannot be moved from it's original position. Is there anyway to release it? I've seen this happen before but can't get around it! Thanks again!
Get a CPU with alot of threads, and some fast ram. 16+ should be more than enough. Graphic cards doesn't matter all too much. Only for the viewport, not for rendering.
nice, but what if i add more lights to the scene do i have to make all the lights linked to hdri ? everytime i add a ies light, plane or sphere the lighting sets to only those lights and ignore the hdri light :/ please advise
+setitek Hi I'm using a Lenovo w530 laptop...not the most powerful PC out there.. The render times on my videos looks fast because I fast forward the video when editing it :)
I love this tutorial!! I'm fascinated about creating HDRI lighting after using one last year to illuminate a 3D torus knot within a photo of my garden. After posting it on FB, my friends where asking me where they could get one from ;-). Subbed..
By using a HDRI in a vraydome and in the env slot, you are double using the HDRI. Right? I never thought to use a dome AND the env slot to light (i tick "use map" off).
You are right, the reason I used the HDRI in the env slot is to preview the map in the background, while playing with the horizontal rotation. When rendering the final image you should tick off the "use map", so the light will only come from the Vray dome.
Jez2008UK The environment slot controls the background of your viewport. Any color or image that you put there will show up in the background. But if you wish to use an HDRI with vray it is best to insert it in vray dome light which overrides the 3ds max environment slot (unless you make it invisible). In the video I only use the 3ds max environment slot to preview the HDRI in the viewport so I could position the sun correctly.
Arch Viz Camp Thanks for you reply. But this is where I get confused. I don't believe that it does simply show up in the background. It shows up in the background but also will illuminate the scene. Which ties in with what Thomas Mulford said. So I'm still confused what it is truly for - is there a way to make the Environment slot simply hold the Backplate (eg sky) as a backdrop but with NO contribution towards illumination ? Thanks :)
Hello sir, I checked my material editor and I only have VrayGLSLMtl in my Vray panel of Material/Map browser. I have Vray 2.50.01 and 3ds Max 2014. Where can I get the HDRI option as shown in your tutorial? Please help. Thank you.
Well it turns out it works with corona same way, thx Also if you have blury image, go to views, viewport config, display perfomance, and scale viewport background\env to 4k to have nice and sharp result in active viewport
+Bernard M Yes, you can import it directly as a SketchUp file. Or, you can export the model as 3ds file type and then import into 3ds max (works better sometimes )
Hi. I am Using 3ds max 2016(Vray 3.40.01). whenI am rendering an interior scene with daylight system with mr physical sky map in environment slot. It renders and shows background map through the glass windows. But when I use hdri map image in a material editor which I instaced in envi. map slot it renders all window glass black and oes not show backround hdri image.
Hi, many thanks for this tutorial. However I have a problem with Environmental Background in active viewport. All the parameters are fine and were set as it is shown in the tutorial. And still HDRI displays as white, regardless to overall multiplier adjustment. I use 3ds max 2015 and V-Ray 2.4. In 2012 works perfect. Any clue? I would realy appreciate your help.
+Piotr Porębowicz It may be a bug in 2015 version..I use 2014 so I can't tell you for sure. Try to install the latest service pack for your version from Autodesk website.
Hey guys, have you found a fix to this? I'm using Max 2016 with vray 3.0 and service pack 2 (latest) and im still getting this problem, very frustrating :(
Hi! Very good tutorial. One question, what are the settings you have at the 'Gamma and LUT' for like this video? When I select the HDRI file it always seems to appear at the material editor overexposed (black/white). Thank you in advance.
hi. after setting everything like you did it, my render is completely dark. i mean somewhere i can see a brighter parts but generally its black. any idea?
Tomasz Rejowski you can send me a dropbox link with your 3ds max file + hdr image and I'll check it out. you can send it in here or in a private message on my Facebook page facebook.com/archvizcamp
Arch Viz Camp After looking at your file I manage to find the reason for this problem. Go to your render settings->Vray tab->global switches and turn on the "use 3ds max photometric scale" (its on by default). Also I have noticed that the output gamma is set to 1.0, this also could make your image dark if you don't apply gamma correction in post production. you can correct this by going to color mapping settings and changing the gamma to 2.2
How about Gamma and LWF settings? My test is almost black with gamma 2.2. I'm using: Area, 1/4 DMC sampler, Linear Multiply default, Mode: Color mapping and gamma. Can you help me?
+Lorenzo Selvaggi Hey, i'm sure you've found the answer by now, but VrayHDRI is a map and not a material, click on the same button as he does at 00:15 and you should find it in the -Maps -Vray section
hi how come the rendering time is so fast ?is it the computer u are using or some kind of trick with the rendering engine, i have a latitude e5540 8 gb ram and a nvidia geforce gt720m
Hi, nice tutorial, unfortunately i cant follow because i dont see VRayHDRI Material in my Vray materiel browser window, though there other vray Material including vrayLight. am i missing something could you please focus on how can i get that VRayHDRI mat. oh btw i am using 2ds Max 2015 and vray 30007, Thanks.
+Shams Haque when you press the " get material " button .. there are 2 drop down menus for the V-ray .. the one we got the HDRI from is located at the bottom .. if i got exactly what you mean . best of luck .
Hi! Thx for the tut, very nice tips you gave there. But I have a question. I've notcied that you are using VRayDome light to set the scene reflections, by putting HDRI map into texture slot. But VRay dome light has resolution limit! Its not important that i'm using 4k HDRI map, cuz the VRay Dome is using 2048 as the max resolution and my reflections are blurry in higher resolution images :( Any tip how to make it better?
Krzysztof Pysz hmmm that's odd...2048 px works fine for my reflaction. You could try placing a sharper hdri image in the reflaction environment override slot in the vray settings. let me know if it helps
Quick question, is inverse gamma something that only exists in 2014 onwards? I have 2013 and can't find it anywhere :( I have coordinates listed in the menu instead
aina zakariah I didn't, sorry. I think it's the same when you select it from the rendering/environmental slot. I grab it from there then drag an instance to my material editor.
when you open material editor to get vray hdri option you only need to "press G" and you will can get that option :) iam using max 2015 hope u get that option if u using any other version too
Can I ask you a question? When I place the dome light in the scene, everything goes black, I can't see anything. When I produce a render everything is fine but I'm having a really difficult time setting up the cameras etc. because I can't see anything. Any ideas how I can fix that?
Great tutorial, thanks ! I'm actually working on a render for the university and I'd like to have black edges around the pool too but I can't do it. Would you help me ?

do you have a particular workflow from sketchup to max?

TNice tutorials is the best tutorial. Simply explained to a newbie, great job man.
For those that are also getting a black background - Set overall multiplier to about +50 (Material editor > hdri map > Overall multiplier)
i have the same problem
but now i have too much brightness in the half black background of HDRI
Yo You Are A Life Saver!!!! i paid $15 for a top quality HDRI image for my scene and it kept coming up black but after tweaking the overall multiplier it worked and i want to kiss you :3

Hi.,
do u know how to fix this problem because I'm also having same problems

thanks for the tut, i've got some questions: did you use vray sun? and if you did, any thing should i notice?
I only used vray dome light with hdri
Arch Viz Camp thank you.
really nice video... i have one question.. how ur comp does rendering so fast..? what rendering fast, defends?
io sawkali kaci Thank's! Actually, my PC is not that fast, all the render times are fast forwarded when I edited the video :)

CG Chris Thank's ! I'll make a tutorial about that in the future.
Video for putting your own softs on or is that possible. I can softbox so would like to up load my own softs.
Did you change any default settings in render? Because iam not getting the same result.
Can someone please clarify for me ?
Exactly what is the Environment Slot used for and when should you use it ?
Thanks.

Thanks for you reply.
Thank you.
Here are my list of options:
imgur.com/a/bfNjr
+Broken Nose in the material/map browser you need to open the "Maps" tab and then "V-ray" tab. you will find "VrayHDRI" in there
mate i can't find in the material/map browser the vray hdri ..can u help in this..
Thank you for this nice and easy tutorial and also for the hdris.
Well it turns out it works with corona same way, thx
Also if you have blury image, go to views, viewport config, display perfomance, and scale viewport background\env to 4k to have nice and sharp result in active viewport
Hi Arch Viz Camp thanks for you tutorial, but can you tell me more about your render setups? somehow my renders turn black only...
Hello, could one import a sketchup model into 3Dmax and do this process?
+Bernard M Yes, you can import it directly as a SketchUp file. Or, you can export the model as 3ds file type and then import into 3ds max (works better sometimes )
+Arch Viz Camp Thank you very much for the speedy reply :)
Keep up the good work !
This was fantastic and the best tutorial I have seen on HDRI lighting. Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly :) J
j may you're welcome :)
nicely done. no nonsense. thank you.
hello sir, i really want to know why do we have to put dome light ? what is can help?
So clearly explained ! thanks
Many good modelling and rendering tutorials coming out of mexico at the moment
+Arch Viz Camp Yes, it is a bug. Anyways many thanks for your help. Best!
Hey guys, have you found a fix to this? I'm using Max 2016 with vray 3.0 and service pack 2 (latest) and im still getting this problem, very frustrating :(
Hi again, I've just upgraded to vray 3.2 and it has fixed the problem. It's a vray problem not a 3ds Max one.
+Hasscfc many thanks! This information helps a lot!
thank you very much. this very help me.
but what about render setup.(vray tab)
could I ask you how to setup?
Excelente tutorial, a mi si me funciono amigo, sin tanto parloteo y directo al grano.
Hi! Very good tutorial. One question, what are the settings you have at the 'Gamma and LUT' for like this video? When I select the HDRI file it always seems to appear at the material editor overexposed (black/white). Thank you in advance.
so simple... Great.. Thanx a lot!!
hello can you tell me what kind of computer do you have? tanks
hi. after setting everything like you did it, my render is completely dark. i mean somewhere i can see a brighter parts but generally its black.
Also I have noticed that the output gamma is set to 1.0, this also could make your image dark if you don't apply gamma correction in post production. you can correct this by going to color mapping settings and changing the gamma to 2.2
:) great. now i can continue with your tutorial. thanks for your help ;)
Very, very good tutorial. Thank you very much.
really easy thank you....but my hdri image is way too big. what to do Arch Viz Camp ?
How about Gamma and LWF settings? My test is almost black with gamma 2.2. I'm using: Area, 1/4 DMC sampler, Linear Multiply default, Mode: Color mapping and gamma. Can you help me?
Incredible tutorial! Thank you
Thanks ArcNice tutoriale! If you ever have a question, just write a comnt and I’ll try my best to help. Also consider joining my free community
I'm trying to find the VrayHDRI in the Material Browser as you did, but i can't find it. I'm using V ray 2.4, is it too old to work with HDRI maybe?
+Lorenzo Selvaggi Hey, i'm sure you've found the answer by now, but VrayHDRI is a map and not a material, click on the same button as he does at 00:15 and you should find it in the -Maps -Vray section
+toomanylayers I actually solved, but thank you anyway both for the answer both for the video in general! : )
hi how come the rendering time is so fast ?is it the computer u are using or some kind of trick with the rendering engine, i have a latitude e5540 8 gb ram and a nvidia geforce gt720m
***** actually I speed up the time when I edit the video. In real time the rendering is slower :)
***** I'm a different guy :) But I love Vizcorbel too, learned a lot from him
Nice tutorial , well explained
When i just open and render your scene with VRAY renderer, everything is black. Do you know why? i have 3.00.08 vray renderer
Ahmad Turki Thanks for reply Bro, tho i figured it out just yesterday LOlL keep up the good work :)
Hi! Thx for the tut, very nice tips you gave there. But I have a question.
I've notcied that you are using VRayDome light to set the scene reflections, by putting HDRI map into texture slot. But VRay dome light has resolution limit! Its not important that i'm using 4k HDRI map, cuz the VRay Dome is using 2048 as the max resolution and my reflections are blurry in higher resolution images :(
Any tip how to make it better?
Krzysztof Pysz hmmm that's odd...2048 px works fine for my reflaction. You could try placing a sharper hdri image in the reflaction environment override slot in the vray settings. let me know if it helps
I am not getting enough light through this! Is there any problen in setting?
THANK YOU , IT IS REALLY HELPFUL :)
Glad to hear that!
Quick question, is inverse gamma something that only exists in 2014 onwards? I have 2013 and can't find it anywhere :( I have coordinates listed in the menu instead
tNice tutorials tutorial was very satisfying
THANK YOU SO MUCH BEFORE SEE THIS VIDEO I FOUND THAT HOW TO SET OBJECT AND HDRI SHADOW BUT NOW CLEAR MY ALL PROBLEM WHICH I FACING
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You have simplified my life so much!!! THANK YOU!
Thanks a lot for the great tutorial.
What if I turned the Dome Light off?
Am I going to have the same results?
So whats causing the light source for the shadows?? the sun position on vray hdri? as u didnt used any vray sun...
Chowdhury Md Junayed Yes, the light and shadows are produced by the HDRI. There is no other lights in the scene.
thank you very very very much! the video helped me enormously
Do you know why I can never find the VRayHDRI through the material editor? I have to start at the Rendering/Environmental slot.
setting vray in ->> F10
Do you found the solution?. Cause mine got the same problem too. There is no options for vray hdri.
aina zakariah I didn't, sorry. I think it's the same when you select it from the rendering/environmental slot. I grab it from there then drag an instance to my material editor.
when you open material editor to get vray hdri option you only need to "press G" and you will can get that option :) iam using max 2015 hope u get that option if u using any other version too
***** Yes, I was having the same problem. The thing is not looking in the "materials", scroll down to "maps" and then V-Ray. You should see it there.
Can I ask you a question? When I place the dome light in the scene, everything goes black, I can't see anything. When I produce a render everything is fine but I'm having a really difficult time setting up the cameras etc. because I can't see anything. Any ideas how I can fix that?
Change the viewport mod from realistic to shaded.
pretty good tuto, thanks !
Great tutorial, thanks ! I'm actually working on a render for the university and I'd like to have black edges around the pool too but I can't do it. Would you help me ?
