Making money at the mint in Philadelphia

  • Let the repetitive smoothness of money minting calm your nerves! Follow along as technicians and machines turn sheets of metal into pennies, nickels, dimes and dollar coins. A satisfying conclusion - cold, hard cash - to an old industrial process. Will this give you Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response aka ASMR, tingles? I don’t know, but it does for me. Ted Shaffrey shot this video on April 25, 2007, at the United States Mint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Yeah and the cents were made of copper - not just plated.
The nickels are "worth" more than 6 cents.
60 years ago a handful of change could buy a couple people a decent breakfast.
      Now it's an insulting tip.

I delivered blank pennies to the Mint a bunch of years ago. Picked them up somewhere in Tennessee. There were 6 large bullet proof chests in my trailer. I think it was about $18,000 dollars worth. Drove my 18 wheeler down to the docks in the basement. It was an experience I'll never forget

I worked at a steel works and every so often an armoured car would arrive carrying old bank notes in bales and they went into a furnace charger which then placed them into the furnace for destruction at 1600 degrees.

    1. "Blanks" are punched from the sheets. There are small scraps of metal left after the blanks have been punched from the sheet metal.
    2. "Planchets" are made from the blanks by providing sort of a rim around the edge, which will be perfected when the planchet is stamped by the dies. A comparison of a blank with a planchet is shown at 15:05.
    3. Coins are made from the planchets.
    4. At 18:00, coins are inspected. ["They don't say 'Hanes' until "I" say they say 'Hanes' "]
    5. Various coins (such as John Adams presidential dollars, Washington State quarters, Lincoln Memorial cents, nickels and dimes are shown.
    6. a) Does the guy at 37:55 ever suffer from "metal fatigue"?
    6. b) Around 44:15, this gives new meaning to the term "March of Dimes"!
