      Why would someone be surprised at that? AI labs have existed in western universities isnce 1950s and we very widespread by late 1960s. In the 1990s, children around the world were playing with Tamagotchi and Furbi dolls. eventhough they used "apparent AI" but still us kids in the 1990s India knew about AI.

    Also a fun fact, Leg Before Wicket is also where the expression "That's a good shout" comes from. When cricket bowlers think a ball is LBW, they will turn to the umpire and shout "How's that!" and if the commentator thinks there is a good chance it is LBW, they will say, "that's a good shout".

    • @marcarvalho86
      @marcarvalho86 4 місяці тому +14

      @@howardtreesong4860 basically, the point of the game is not to block the stumps with your legs. It is to play the ball with your bat. It would be damn near impossible to get any batsman worth their salt out if they were allowed to block the stumps with their legs. (Btw, point of terminology, the stumps are the three sticks that hold up the bails, which are the two twig-like pieces of wood on top of the stumps, and together, they make up the wicket. Although "wicket" can mean other things too. No one said this sport isn't confusing.)

      @@marcarvalho86 Thank you, I appreciate the explanation. I have to say I have tried to watch a game of cricket. I very much loved the focus, the enthusiasm and the atmosphere. The commentary was excited and although I know many of the words they were using I understood absolutely nothing of what they were saying 🙂.
      Why do I like cricket and its passionate practitioners: because the worst game of cricket is better than the best war. Compete your hearts out [in a fair and honest way!].
      I don't play it, I don't have a chance to watch it. If it was my call, I'd pay for every cricket game in the world, just so people would compete, vehemently if you please, and be passionate about the fortunes of 'our team'.

    Actually, Sir Ian Taylor was the first to bring graphics and prediction imagery to sport. Starting with, and likely popularizing the Americas Cup, making it accessible to the common person that couldn't tell, thus was not interested in what was going on in a yacht race. With 45 years experience they now do this for many global sports remotely from New Zealand. Fun fact, Sir Ian was an ex band member and entertainer with little tech knowledge. He assembled a team of locals who completed in the IBM global programming competition (vs Cambridge, Yale etc) and won it. Faith in his team and ingenuity was his recipe for success.

    Actually cricket use of video referrals started long before LBW, not sure of the date but could have been as much as a decade earlier, with run out calls. At first if the umpire was not sure they could ask for a video call on a run out. Now the umpires are almost totally out of the process and almost no run out call is made by the umpire. So when the LBW calls started happening people were at least familiar with the process. It was Australian TV that drove the early development, just as it did with in car cameras in motor sport. Australia was doing that long before anyone else even thought of it.

    It's not completely automated. It still relies on a tech to input the point of impact of the ball on the pitch and the batter. The computer then simulates the rest of the trajectory of the ball.

    For those learning cricket it doesn't have to hit the leg. It only has to hit something other than the bat or by extension the hand holding the bat. If it hits the bat before hitting the body then the batsman should be considered not out. If it hits the bat AFTER hitting the body though it is still eligible to be out. There are other stipulations to the law but trying to explain that here would just confuse you.
