Question. Wouldnt it be better to pull water into pump from the bottom of barrel. Filter material below pump with holes drilled into bottom of filter pipe for water intake. This way you would be picking up waster from bottom. Appears your design may not be picking up water from bottom of tank. Want to build one for shad. Thanks for video, you got me thinking. 😂
Yes I agree with you ,and also I've heard you have to keep pumping fresh water in and waste water out for shad .I would like to know if that is a fact .
Hey y'all, So when I uploaded the first bait tank video I had no idea I would have so much interest. Honestly I was just proud of my work and wanted to help other with a limited income make some pretty cool outdoors stuff. Since then I have completed a few other projects like an elevated box blind, food plots, apple trees for your deer and other wild animals you may hunt, homemade furniture, home renovations, and videoed wild game hunts, id love to start sharing some of things if anyone would be interested!? if you have any specific projects you'd like to see just let me know. Thanks everyone!
I only built these for myself and my brother in law. I can't build them cheap enough to feel good about a selling price. Materials typically run about $200-300 but the time it takes to build them is very time consuming. So I don't build them to sell I'm sorry..
Building my first one now, love your design and video!! Only parts im missing to complete this would be a reducer from my pvc elbow to the spray bar and the spray bar end cap. Any recommendations on what to call those parts/where to find them?? Thanks for an awesome video and all your help!
Awesome David! Glad your building one!! The specialized reducer that transitions you from the 3/4 pvc to the spray bar is not all that special. Because I got mine at my local Lowes home improvement.. I've purchased all of mine there. Just find someone in plumbing and show him the picture of mine. They will have it! The end cap as well 👍
This is the best DYI livewell I have seen! Great work and attention to details. I transport bait from the marsh to my boat and this would be ideal. Any chance you make and sell them?
The tanks take a lot of attention and time to build not including a lot of hardware and parts. I couldn't sell them cheap enough to feel good about it.. Thanks for the kind comments!
Nice diy if i was u i would get rid of a spray bar an go with a danco there way more efficient an then u can also have some current with help keep them happy but its still a good tank good job
This is a great looking tank. How did you make the lid set flush. The opposite side of the hinges when you open and close lid is it hitting some metal tabs? You don’t really show it in the video. I’m wanting to make a similar tank. Thanks in advance
The lid is setting on top of 5-6 1in "L" brackets. The brackets are screwed into the plastic tank, down from the top at the exact thickness of the wood. Then I screwed up through the bottom of the brackets into the wood to secure it. Yes the lid comes down and sits on two small metal tabs that are screwed into the bottom of the lid.
The last time I built one of these was about 2 years ago and the material cost from our local hardware store was around $250-$300. That includes and pump barrel and all the hardware bolts and washer you may already have. With the amount of time and precision I would not feel right pricing one that high. If you decide to build one I would happy to answer and questions along the way as best as I can I will now be active on this channel and uploading outdoorsman DIY type of things.
Remember the tank is made to keep bait fish alive for 1-3 days.. Anything longer than that should require a more sophisticated system.. I will say this. I have kept bait fish alive in this exact tank for over a week,,, but that's pulling the drain plug and replenishing the whole tank with fresh water and shad keeper everyday. If you are doing that, the poop at the bottom, will flow very freely out of the large drain plug that is positioned at the very bottom of the tank.
That was an electrical box I purchased from Lowes and the screws came with it. It was rated for outdoor use but appreantly that wasn't 100% accurate by the manufacturer..
I wish I could make them for money but I just don't have time nor can I comfortably charge enough for the time it takes to make one.. Thank you for the compliment sir!
So sorry for the delayed response but this is a great question. This was a trial and error I can save many people from going through if your just starting your tank. The exact measurement is 22-5/16. I would suggest cutting the lid 22-3/8 and fine sanding from there to an exact fit. Hope this helps!
Another great question Nathan sorry for the super late response. Ive had great success leaving 3/4 to an 1 inch at the top of the filter cut outs. You could go lower if you have less bait fish.
I sprayed on 4-5 coats of polyurethane. Which was one full can.. That was after 2-3 coats of minwax stain. Stain soaks up quick you can get all 3 coats on, in one full day..
Can you build one for electric and put a timer on it the run so long and cut off and run so long cut off so on so on and also you can do the same thing on the timer on the boat save the battery
1 in stainless steel L brackets. Mount them around the plastic tank, set the wood top onto it, then screw 3/4 in screws up through the bottom of the plywood through the L brackets.. Hope that helps!
There are 1 in L brackets mounted around the plastic container. Then the lid sits right on top of those six brackets and I screwed in up through the bottom of the L bracket into the wood on the bottom of the lid
I can't make them for the time and materials involved to sell them for a price I would feel comfortable with with.. Just hoping to help someone like me with some ideas..
I have only built these for family members. right now I can't build them cheap enough to feel good about a selling price. Just the materials are normally around $200-300 plus the amount of time it takes to build.

I may incorporate some of your ideas into my next build ... which will be insulated. Nice job!

I watched a lot of bait tank vids getting ideas. First one I’ve seen that could be marketed.

Love your tank. What size barrel are you using gallon wise before you cut in half
Doh I finally caught it 50 gallon.
Nice diy if i was u i would get rid of a spray bar an go with a danco there way more efficient an then u can also have some current with help keep them happy but its still a good tank good job
Great job the best I've seen thanks for sharing
Thanks man! What other kind of DIY outdoor videos would y'all like to see?

You sell them?
Great video. Did you try a boat plug vice a screw in plug for drain? if so what problems did you have?
I never tried a boat plug but it will work just as good maybe easier than screwing the plug out 👍
How does it pick up poop off the bottom of the tank? Looks like those slotted vents are 4" from the bottom.

I noticed on the screws on the electrical box lids had started to rust. Why not stainless there too?
That was an electrical box I purchased from Lowes and the screws came with it. It was rated for outdoor use but appreantly that wasn't 100% accurate by the manufacturer..
Thats basically a nice tank.
Where could a guy get one of these
Hello sir how much do you charge to make one of those beautiful bait tanks
I wish I could make them for money but I just don't have time nor can I comfortably charge enough for the time it takes to make one.. Thank you for the compliment sir!
Great info
thank you nice video specs on the light please
Awesome design thanks for the info.
Thanks so much Faron, feel free to ask any questions on here along the building process and I will help to the best I can!
What demention did you cut the lid to get it to fit that good
So sorry for the delayed response but this is a great question. This was a trial and error I can save many people from going through if your just starting your tank. The exact measurement is 22-5/16. I would suggest cutting the lid 22-3/8 and fine sanding from there to an exact fit. Hope this helps!
Very, very nice!!
What diameter did you cut your lid?
I can mark it on the barrel but after I cut it it’s not perfectly round.
After I cut the barrel I meant to say.
Does it matter how high the water goes over the cut outs in the filter pipe
Another great question Nathan sorry for the super late response. Ive had great success leaving 3/4 to an 1 inch at the top of the filter cut outs. You could go lower if you have less bait fish.
What did you use to waterproof the wooden lid? Thanks in advance
That's a great idea Bryan. It would be a nice addition to an already great bait tank. Nice idea 👍
What method did you use to mount the plywood top to the tank
1 in stainless steel L brackets. Mount them around the plastic tank, set the wood top onto it, then screw 3/4 in screws up through the bottom of the plywood through the L brackets.. Hope that helps!
This tank will not do for herring, shad, do you made a shaf tank?
@Chris Sheahan - why would this not be good for herring/shad?
How much and do you ship? Awesome design, you should get a patent for it
Nice job! Do you sell them and how much?
Do you still make this bait tank
I only made a few for myself. There is so much time involved that the bait tanks would be too expensive to sell.
How much u charge for the Livewell slim
This build is bad ass
Thank you ! I have kept bait alive in this tank for around 6-7 days thats adding a little shad keeper as well
Where did you find the spray bar?
The spray bar was built out of poly tubing, elbows and fitings and all materials came from Lowes home improvement
How do you attach the lid?
There are 1 in L brackets mounted around the plastic container. Then the lid sits right on top of those six brackets and I screwed in up through the bottom of the L bracket into the wood on the bottom of the lid
How can i get ahold of you to make one
I would like to buy one if you have one for sale
How much you charge to build me one?
Do you sell these???
I'm sorry Trevor I do not.. Just don't have time my friend..
How much do you charge
I can't make them for the time and materials involved to sell them for a price I would feel comfortable with with.. Just hoping to help someone like me with some ideas..
Do u sell them n if so how much n can u ship it out
I want one to do u ship and how much?
