In an age of increasingly massive “SUV’s” and crossovers, it’s so refreshing to see a manufacturer committed to making a small, affordable and fun little car.
Car reviewer: acceleration is comical.
Real life people: speed limit is 20 miles.
Got a 08 picanto . Been with me 16 yrs. Still works gr8
Mines a 60 plate, base model picanto 1 110,000 miles on, still drives great
If at all, cars like this should be subsidized by governments, not those €100,000 3-tons electric mastodons.
Abso-f***ing-lutely
UK should have a rule like the Japanese Kei vehicles rules. Then,as a kei driver, I would say that.
a policy to benefit regular, irelevant people? never going to happen.
Cars like this being small, light affordable electrics, but don't be pulling your leg thinking subsidizing combustion is any solution
Why? If you consider that the MPG and emissions of these engines are on par with the likes of a Qashqai E-Power, a vehicle which is much larger, heavier, and more performant, what is the subsidy for? There is already a VED premium on cars over 40K.
I don’t mind forsaking the 0-60, but for such a small car I’d want 60mpg+
get hybrid yaris
Hybrid clio 66 mpg love it
No diesel, no good. Getting 70mpg out of a Fiesta (though everything else about the Fiesta is dreadful).
New suzuki swift has that figures
@@Jace_h7poor ride quality for the money. Should have offered it with 15inch wheels same as the Mazda 2 hybrid.
Great looking car. I miss having access to small cars while living in Europe. The U.S has NO small cars.
I am from Germany and I work in the United States.
I don't miss tiny Euro city cars at all especially considering how much you are in your car in the United States.
Plenty of room and good power are very nice.
In Germany, I drive an Opel Astra but in the United States I drive a Toyota Camry and I can tell you that when my wife and I took a trip through the Western States the Toyota was much more comfortable than the Astra would have been.
@@williamegler8771 What area of Germany are you from. I used to live in the in the Phalz
Profits Profits Profits
We have way fewer small cars in Europe in the last decade
@@williamegler8771Yes, and they are two completely different cars
Probably the smallest car we can buy is a Hyundai Venue, a four meter hatchback with a 120 HP 1.6 engine. Really at least a class above this one. US pricing starts around 20k $ but sales tax in most states adds 6-9% and there's a standard $1000 delivery fee. I rarely see one on the road. But petrol here is 80¢/litre. We're still a strange country.
I think this Picanto is one of my favourite new cars
For a city car, independent of low engine power and poor 0-60mph numbers, it's a good option. Its shape looks good (has a futuristic design) e looks comfortable, could be a good start as first car for anyone.
Poor 0-60 numbers...not really. Only a few years ago this was the norm for pretty much every car. What's this obsession with getting to 60 MPH as far as possible
@@stephen546 I totally agree with you. I said "poor" before many cars, but for me isn't important. I have an 46HP 1977 Volkswagen Beetle, so...🤣🤣🤣
@@stephen546 I agree 100%, I don't live on a Motorway slip road and need to get to 60 mph within a few seconds.
@tommullen2958 Nobody needs to get to 60 MPH in just a few seconds, ie 4 and even fewer have their foot on the floor trying to achieve that. If anyone can't cope with a car that gets to 60 in, say, 10 seconds, they probably shouldn't be on the road. Most people get to 60MPH much slower than that, why?, because they don't need to go so fast. Who is driving around going from 0 - 60MPH as fast as possibly all the time. What's actually more important is stopping power...
Got a GT Line S , 1 litre turbo and its simply fantastic. Love driving it!
Snap . I AGREE.
Got a 2015 special edition Picanto that was £7,495 brand new with a 7 year warranty. Never has missed a beat. The fact these now cost £15-20k is absurd. This generation is nothing more than eyelashes and contouring - same platform entirely for the last 10+ years.
I AGREE WITH YOU. My 2019, 1*2 GT Line S has a 0 to 60 mph of 9*9 secs & NOT 13*1 secs.
Much more safety, emission and GSR2 equipment driving up costs.
It still makes me wonder how many peoople feel their dashboard every day for its soft feel.
I agree, I've never understood why they make such a big deal about it, the only time you touch it is to wipe it.
That what I was thinking every time they complain about the material.
That what I was thinking every time they complain about the material.
Saw this on the road and it’s super funky. Looks way better than newer European cars
If I was offering a 7 year 100k warranty as standard I probably wouldn’t want to be selling a 1L turbo either to be honest.
They never should have gotten rid of the 1.0 turbo, this will be a major turn off for many buyers. Better order that Dacia Spring instead .....
you can either have a 1.0 turbo or a 7 year warranty. they went for the warranty. thats an attractive feature as well.
The Spring is a class below
WHAT IS THE DACIA SPRING LIKE?
I have had the Skoda Monte Carlo with the VW 1.0 and 1.5 turbo engines and they are Soo much better than a normally aspirated small ICE engine and the turbos have 30 - 40% more power.
The crush I have on Doug is not even funny. I could spend an entire day watching him review cars!
These videos are always on point! Not too long, nice shots, all the information we need displayed and explained perfectly…
Damn, my automotive panties 😂
Same lol. I'm always annoyed when I see a new upload and he's not the reviewer!
Do tariffs or taxes come into play here. I bought a brand new Suzuki Swift Sport a couple of years ago for under £16000 in New Zealand which tootles around town but has plenty of go on the open road. I do like small practical cars that are perfect for 90% of motoring needs and adequate for the other 10%.
Now that is a cute little car...
I like the size. I am starting to dislike manual cars to drive in London.
Q-Hate driving in london-A don't drive
prefer em, i'm old school
I love this car... For city errands... This is just perfect..
At those prices Kia should just offer the turbo engine as standard. Stay clear of the automated manual option if still available as near impossible to drive smoothly
As a company that offers a 7 year warranty I’d guess there’s a reason for ditching a little engine with a turbo bolted to it. I know used car dealers talk of the issues they face with them from many manufacturers
I have had a amt for nearly one year it takes time to learn it is smooth enough. Remember kia are not a luxury car. But a good alternative to Minis. I definitely prefer Kia to the German alternative.
@@stevenham1937 it was obvious that these engines would develop reliability issues but no one wanted to talk about that
That's not true you just have to adjust driving style with automated manual!
Considering that KIA is fond of selling posh behemoths like the EV6, it's behind disappointing that the Picanto has zero electric or even hybrid option. Hell, the kei car RAVEV has been built in South Korea for a.decade now.
Keicars can't pass homologation tests here
See Richard Fanders video on the pre face lifted automated manual version of this car. He seems to be of the opinion that it is one of the better ones , something not shared by most car reviewers who seem to be obsessed with 0 to 60 times.
I own a 2019 gt line s 1.0 turbo. Super fun car packed with loads of goodies for a small car heated seats etc. To find they have discontinued the turbo versions for a a straight 1.0/1.2 such a shame now the car has no grunt. looks like I'll be moving to the nline in a couple years. What made this car fun was the 1.0T really does have plenty of go for such a small car unfortunately now that's lost.
Wait, UK still having manual wind up window… they phase that out in Australia over 20 years ago.
the old had 100bhp :O omg.... this with 150-170bhp would be fun.
If Dacia can create a small electric city car, I’m sure that Kia could do the same thing for a very similar price!!
The Kia Inster is what you're looking for.
Completely different class of car
@AzzamLah Yes and a lot more expensive than the Spring...but better too
Indeed it is, because it's a different class of car and not a budget one
@@AzzamLah Ins't the Inster a Hyundai car ?
Need this in India. My city is simply too big with too many people and all of them are buying SUVs, hence increasing traffic. The Picanto will be a great option. We already get it's cousin, the Hyundai I10 in the markets, but this looks better.
Really liked the video, short, had good amount of info, straight to the point. Surprised
Although, i wish they talked more about the ergonomics and storage in the cockpit (like door bins and pockets in general).
Regarding the engine, at home i have a 05 modus with the 4cyl 1.2 16v na, which has around the same power, and yes, it's slow and overtaking is anxiety inducing, but for the city it's enough, and for the highway or faster roads it's still serviceable.
The modus also has very short gears, so you will shift very often, but the clutch is easy and forgiving enough to make it super easy to go through the gears even if someone is not very experienced
Kia made a mistake not offering a 1 litre turbo.....
The Best!
Turbo Gt Line...A DREAM CAR!!!
Demonstrating the amount of room in the rear seat becomes pointless if you don’t know the height of the tester. I am sure you have told the viewers this in some earlier episode but those of us who watch a lot of car reviews really can’t remember the height of everyone. Please display the height of the tester on screen when you demonstrate rear seats, thank you.
Saw one yesterday, probably a 2 spec in red. It's nearly £16k in this spec, but every car is getting expensive. As for people buying fewer city-size cars.......well, if you can't find any, you eventually stop looking. For years we were fed the "everyone wants an SUV or crossover" lie which means that you just keep what you've got until car companies start offering what you want to buy.
Make a review of Tata Curvv EV
Ive had nice cars in the past and traded my volvo v40 for a 21 plage gt line. Honestly one of best cars I've owned. Save a fortune in fuel as get 50mpg easy. Cheap insurance and it's so easy and fun to drive. The amount of time I pass people in 60k cars on way to work and now I just think what a plonker they are as really not needed
I have seen the Kia Web site.... £15,600 for the base model. Sorry but it is clear that the Dacia is cheaper, larger and will save you at least £100/mth in fuel.
Cheap city cars are no longer cheap.
If your market is city car and you’re spending over £100/month on fuel, your market isn’t city car.
I've got a 17 year old 2.0 diesel Peugeot, my commute is 9 miles each way and it 30mph roads all the way. I'm spending about £80 every 4 weeks on fuel. A city car would be perfect for my commute 🤷🏻♂️@@stephenwakeman3074
£100 a month saving on petrol in a city car 😂😂 if you're using that much fuel in a city get a bus pass.
@@stepheng8779 Average mileage is 8,000/yr... easily £100/mth
why drop the 1.0l turbo engine ?
All other car makers have gone full on turbo, so i am wondering why Kia dropped it on the picanto
Kia needs to bring to Eu two models - Ray EV and Carnival Hybrid.
Why?
@@stephen546 we need little EVs for cities and big cars for big families which are not based on commercial ones.
I heard kia is trying to get the ray ev in eu. Maybe hyundai will bring the inster, or the casper too. They look cool
And as far as the carnival, nobody buys minivans, i think it would be a flop. Super cool car which is, surprisingly for me tbh, also used as some sort of luxury car in korea. Seen celebrities in it more often than in others
I would love to have a carnival if i had the space for it. It has nothing to envy to an suv in terms of coolness
The Kia spec for width is 1900 mm. It used to be 1595mm. Is it a typo or is the latest version of this car wider?
Shame you didn't test the 0-62mph times I reckon this lil pocket rocket can do it sub 13 seconds 🔥
My Turbo Picanto is the most amazing car. 3 trips down to the South of France, cruising at 140, no problem. Kia have made a serious mistake there!
Shadow trim is for SHADO operatives only…
It would be great to see a comparison between the Kia Picanto and the Toyota Aygo X!
I pootled Epsom to Southampton and back the other day and saw 75mpg
There's a lot going on in the front. It looks like an f150 and a gr yaris had a kid. I don't really know if I like the front end. It really looks like a cyberpunk movie car.
Why does he keep saying "fuel powered" when talking about petrol and diesel?. An electric car is also fuel powered, that fuel being electricity
Because the word “fuel” most commonly refers to a material or substance. Whereas electricity is not a material and an electric motor is simply “powered”.
@stephenwakeman3074 According to the government an EV is an alternative fuelled car, ie electricity
@@stephenwakeman3074 Fuel simply means "an energy source"
Please include Fiat panda cross as well in the future comparison
Shame the 1.0 turbo has been dropped takes some versatility away for rural motoring and the occasional motorway. The front bumper is no looker either.
I have 2023 model. It is good . Little small but acceptable
Strange that it’s now considered a small car yet is probably the same size as the original VW Golf! Hyundai have done the same with removing the mild hybrid so not too sure why.
is the start stop button gone?
Great alternative for the honda fit/jazz
Why no turbo? Is it an eco thing?
They didn't sell in the numbers KIA needed to sell.
Once fitted 7 full size adult in the old picanto
Been trying to help a family member with their car search, thought I might ask here as its a small city car (size) they are looking for. However they want so luxuries and a nice interior (not cheap plastics, etc) since all manufacturers think each new update needs to be bigger and bigger and now the BMW1, Audi a1, Mini, and VW polo are all nearly or as big as the class above, is there any premium small city cars left?
is it a AMT or AT on this new picanto?
It is resembling Hyundai i10 from India
A new car that ISN'T a huge electric SUV 😲
Probably the best car in the world
I was on board before the lack of power. I don’t think those acceleration speeds are acceptable in this day and age. Small, ‘warm’ hatches are very desirable.
Why o why Kia remove the turbo engine which gave the car praise for its performance and economy. If you to delete the engine remove the 1tr non turbo version.
The 1.0T is a good engjne tho fits for the GT variant
India is eagerly waiting for this car
Looks nice.
Most stylish and most high tech small car
Surprised Kia haven't made it a hybrid or electric yet. It's a lovely car but 55mpg is pretty bad for how small and slow it is.
3 model and gtlines keys have the newer sorento key instead of this one.
Looks good in GT version, and they should make it EV ❤❤
What about the Sparewheel?
Only Wired Android Auto and Apple Car Play.... Thats a step backwards, the previous model had Wired & Wireless capability.
What a stunning looking small car ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wish its launched in India ❤❤❤❤❤❤ 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Love your reviews my man. You do a great job! Keep up the good work!
In an over crowded small Island a small car is ideal for most people. The 0 to 60 is not even important for most people.
Which island are you talking about?
I really like this guy. What's his name?
we need this car in India .
With that price, If the UK/EU don't wrestle down the Chinese makers, No one in their actual sense will buy this ahead of the BYD seagull or any other sensible chinese EV offerings at near that price point.
Wouldyou please, please, please stop touching and scratching dashboards?! No one does that in their car. No one!
By far the best small car!
You are driving a gt line and still think it’s slow ?
Kia/Hyundai do quite a lot of `suggesting` as regards their car`s fuel economy....hence being constantly sued in the USA.
A slow as a pig car 1 litre should give 60mpg however it`s driven, from what I`ve heard the 1 litre MPG is more like 45mpg with the 1.2 even lower at around 42mpg, however, the car itself is aimed at people who will do 1500-2000 miles per year going shopping/garden centre twice a week, so fuel economy not that important.
A better buy is the previous model Toyota Yaris 1.5 petrol.....quoted 47mpg (Mine returns around 50mpg) and 0-60 time of around 11 secs, half decent boot, 5 year warranty and Toyota reliability.
Another cracking video review
Please launch this model in india
Lovely car let down by mediocre engines. Imo turbocharged engines are the most useful in city environments where low rev torque is most important due to you constantly stopping and accelerating from low speeds. Can't understand the reasoning behind dropping the turbocharged engine
Ground clearance sucks
Nice looking car. It’s a pity there don’t seem to be ANY decent looking small electric cars.
This or the Swift?
I can’t stand it when people say
“To be fair” 👿👿
Blom masuk indonesia kia picanto terbaru
I have experienced the previous generation, engine isn't good. Too low mileage.
I could understand the poor 0-60 time if the economy was excellent but it isn't.
Seems like both engines badly need that turbo back.
To have the 1.2 engine you have ro select the GT Line-S at a staggering £18,445
You can buy plenty of far better used cars with decent performace and space for this sort of money
Not for me thank you.
Bring it to India
Buy a nearly new Yaris 🤷♂️
That front end looks a mess!!
MPG looks poor. I can get 58mpg out of a BMW 2 litre diesel.
That's what i said.
They give heated seats and steering wheel but no heated front window? heated front windows should be standard for all cars being sold in the UK.
Budget dacia sandero
no turbo, no interest! sorry but im out!
Make it an EV car and I'd get one in the future.
Why do car journos reach out and touch the dash to talk quality but never talk about the door materials where you're always resting your elbows.
That is modernised some old Hyundai siht...🤣
