Mind you, if they were staring at my awesome sexy armour....then that'd be ok, cos that's understandable :P

Though the way you present yourself is what will make it or break it, if you try to go about it being all edgy or trying to be badass when you aren't will indeed just make it weird, but if your personality fits the right tone than you should be alright. I am going to do something similar but with a long coat instead.

I have friends who LARP and do Boffering, and after seeing the armor and equipment they used it really made me want to get into leatherworking. It looks like something I could really get into, and make a good profit on as well. This video has resparked my interest!
I just put leather working in the search bar. Just started watching Game of Thrones (Netflix dvds by mail and I’m seriously behind the times). I’m fascinated by the leather work in the show and your video hits a spot.
I was raised in the SCA (my parents met in Ansteorra) and I miss it a lot. I need to get back out there one day! When I was a kid, a good friend made me a pair of leather vambraces with sheepskin on the inside. That was super comfy and very padded.
What piece of armour should I do next? Also the easiest way to help this channel and enable me to make more videos is to share my videos around. All the support means a lot, thanks everyone.
Since you have the vambraces and elbow armor, why not complete the whole arm and make spaulders/pauldrons. If I had a choice between them, I'd go pauldrons.

I have had made 8 pairs of bazubands for SCA fighting the last few years and using a drill press has been a god send. I use a dremel with a dremel press, not as heavy duty and can go lower speeds. When I harden mine in beeswax afterwards I put it in the oven at like 200 F and watch it until all the wet spots are gone. Then i take it out out form it. My personal ones have held the shape and stiffness through all my fighting for 4 years now.
I've little to no intent on making leather stuff, BUT, crafting with EVA foam actually translates pretty well with leather. Just gotta get the hard stuff.
17:44 I've worked a lot with paracord. And I sometimes use paracord needles that you can screw on to the end of the paracord. Makes it really easy to get it through anywhere you need it to go.
I've had an itch for years to get into crafting of some sort, unfortunately barred by lack of funds. These days, it looks like I'm settling into a lifestyle that allows me to have the extra money-- and this channel has just rekindled my craving to do things just like this. Hopefully I'll get to this level of craftsmanship in the future.
Have you thought about using tarred bank line (used in fishing trout lines applications) instead of 550 cord, its very durable and water resistant, #36 is used as lashing material in bushcraft and they also make several different thicknesses, a #72 is twice as thick as a #36, but the thing is these bank lines are a 3 strand line so you can use it as a single thread if you unravel it, also since its tarred it wont rot for a very long time and its 100% nylon twine.
I searched forever for decent armor patterns until I found your channel. I got your pauldron pattern and it's awesome! I know I'll be picking up this one too, keep up the good work!
You said you messed these up, but that adds character. I'd kill for braces like these, these slight imperfections make it seem more real. To each their own I guess, I love the artwork on these, it ironically matches my chest tattoo, I have a snake hammer. Well cheers man, anyone would be lucky to have a piece like this
Visually it's not too bad, but I think he's saying it's bad because of the brittleness of the leather. If that area gets hit in battle, then that part will shatter, and THEN the whole piece will be ruined. If you're just going to flounce around in it for LARP gear, then it'll prolly be perfectly ok. He just makes his pieces for actual action, is all., and wants to make sure each piece he sends to a customer is structurally strong and can stand up to a hit. :)
I do european medieval combat. Leather bracers would not help much because we are required to use steel gear but I got some ideas for a badass decoration for my tournament ground gear.
I just started making cases for my chisels, hand stitching isnt bad, but i am now interested in stitching techniques even tjough being very satisfied with the first attempts.
Leatherworking is great! It CAN be a bit of an expensive hobby, as both leather and tools are hella expensive, but usually it's the sort of thing where you build up your tool collection slowly and get new little pieces here and there as you need them. The leather is still gonna be expensive at any time, lol! I used to do a lot of leather working years ago...but seeing vids like this really makes me want to get back into it.
The ones that have been found are made of thick leather with a lot of metal rivets or wires that run the length of the vambrace. The metal may be damaged when hit with a blade but they don't seem to be cut through so you get to keep your arm.
I always wanted to make a story/comic that was set in a fantasy medieval world and like, just watching this made me want to pull more effort on the armors XD No idea if I'll ever do it but hey, this was fun to watch.
boyfriend was wanting to get into leathercrafting, I've been looking up some stuff to see how hard it actually is since I'm the resident arts/craft person in our household. Honestly looks like a lot of fun and like I could learn how to do it and craft with him as well.

I have an interest in sci fi fantasy stuff, as well as leather working, and motorcycle riding. I saw these and thought they would offer an additional layer of protection on top of what I already wear in the event things go south while riding.
A very nice video once again Magnus. I'm always amazed by the quality of artwork you put into your pieces. May I add to those viewers watching this thinking of doing artwork onto their own projects... Practice Makes Better (not perfect) when if comes to leather carving. Mistakes will happen especially if you are new. It might be frustrating that you can't carve as well as the maker of the video. As a suggestion to new leather workers here, make simpler patterns or designs; the more curves you make, the more likely you are to go outside of them. Good luck to all of the people trying out making this pattern. Peace.

You could make an easy form of your arm using a sleeve and latex glove combo and the gel they use for making dice molds. Than make a plaster copy of your arm to form the leather around

I used a very similar high melt paraffin saturation technique for my Persian bazubands many years ago when I fought regularly in the SCA. They weren't nearly as attractive as you've made in your video, but they were virtually indestructible (Even in the AZ heat in the summer after being left out in the sun! ) I found your video while looking to refresh my knowledge on the finer points of their crafting , now that the nephews are of age and interested in learning to fight. :)
Really really nice, I started watching cobbling videos a while back and this is really close to that but focuses more on the actual leatherworking which is what i enjoy the most. Plus it adds leathercarving.
I watched hoping that I could see the end product being worn. Still a really cool form of crafting I always wanted to get into and the piece looks amazing.
It would be amazing to do this myself. But I would much rather pay someone like you who has honed this craft to this level. I would be honored to wear your armor. Vary vary talented. 👍👍
Would it be easier if you had some sort of mold to wrap the bracer around to mold it to the right shape? Maybe a mannequin arm or something? It would help it hold it's shape.

You know, I think, if you are going the non-combat costume route, you could easily incorporate a wristwatch (sans strap) into this vambrace design, and make it so you can still tell time without breaking the simulation too much (i.e. pulling a smartphone out). I think I can see people going for that at something like a Renaissance fair, or other Medieval event.

6:13 once i did an experiment using a high watt soldering iron, and it worked like a charm, and made the walls of the holes even more resistant.

I use a dremel tool set in the dremel drillpress to drill my holes. Works really good!

Well made. Paracord tip: you can prevent an untie by cooking the knot just a bit.
I've always just melted the end and never had it untie. But that makes perfect sense, just cook all of it slightly to bind the fibers. Love it.

Oh snap, this is the video we were talking about on etsy! I wasn't expecting it quite THIS fast. Next paycheck I'm definitely picking up the pattern.
You know, I think, if you are going the non-combat costume route, you could easily incorporate a wristwatch (sans strap) into this vambrace design, and make it so you can still tell time without breaking the simulation too much (i.e. pulling a smartphone out). I think I can see people going for that at something like a Renaissance fair, or other Medieval event.
