I just realized I never done an update. I got a replacement unit but still the same result. I read some reviews online about the unit and other people having the same issue. They remedied it by turning down the input level of your audio source (in my case a phone) from full to around 3/4. That resolved the issue for me. So basically just turn the phone bluetooth volume down to around 3/4
