I actually never heard of Adrian Street until just a few years ago and I've been watching wrestling since the early 80s. That's sad really because after I watched some of his matches I was blown away with how ahead of his time he was. Not just with the gimmick, but how he worked. Criminally underrated wrestler.

There was a show called Superstars of Wrestling or something like that (with Joe Pedicino and Bonnie Blackstone) that showed like *8* hours of wrestling from all the territories on Saturday nights. Much of it was like a blur, but fun to watch all these people I'd never heard of. Adrian Street was always one of the standouts I remember, and I've been on a bit of a classic wrestling kick and had to look up videos about him. You have to be a legit tough ass mofo to pull off that gimmick back in the 80s in some of those redneck shitkicker towns.

@@billy4892 no problem my friend, you're not the first guy to mix them up LOL
no problem. Adrian Street actually had a 57-year career. His first match was in 1957 his last match was in 2014. His outlandish wardrobe actually inspired in part the glam-rock movement in England. Marc Bolan of T-Rex proudly said he got the ideas for his outfits by watching Adrian Street on TV, David Bowie as Aladdin Sane completely ripped off Adrian streets look.
He was actually 40 years old when he came to North America in I believe it was early 1981 and was a star in multiple territories across the South. Fun fact, he was the first wrestler that the great Jim cornette ever managed!
You can look on UA-cam here there's matches of him against Dusty Rhodes( Adrian jumped him put makeup all over his face and declared he was now "the American Queen" LMAO) Randy Savage Jerry Lawler Jimmy Valiant among others.
He had one of the greatest gimmicks on top of being a very skilled in-ring technician. Despite being only 5 ft 7 and 220/230 lbs, the "sadist in sequins, the Merchant of Menace" was a trained catch wrestler and legitimately one of the toughest wrestlers out there. As Mick Foley said on Adrian's documentary movie "He was one of the those legendary figures in our business who could hurt you really bad, really quickly". He had no fear of getting heat with the audience because he could tie people into a human pretzel like Stu Hart or Billy Robinson.
He wrote some of the most hilarious songs of all time that he used as his theme songs like "imagine what I could do to you" and =

I was born, raised, and still reside in south Mississippi and I was 14 yrs old in 1985, the year Adrian Street came to our high school gym, and provided some the starkest, and most educational memories of my young life. At that age, I thought if you gay, that you wasn't nothing but a dainty little sissy, and there wasn't nothing to beating up a sissy. I mean sweet Jesus on a moped they WERE sissy-fied. Or so i thought. Anyway, as they were coming through the crowd, our fullback, l won't mention his name, who was a pretty big guy, and pretty tough in my young eyes, made the mistake of spitting on Adrian Street, which I instantly was kinda stunned, but what really put me in shock, because I was less than 3 foot away when Mr Street reached over about 4 people and with just one open hand slap, knocked every last drop of fuck off our fullback, MY full back because I was tailback. And I thought for a fleeting second, of avenging our fallen fullbacks honor, till I realized that chances of that huge fairy beating the shit out of me, with almost no effort on his part from what I just witnessed, were astronomically good. So I figured I better stfu before I got slapped completely sideways too. So that's what I done. I stfu.

Adrian's introduction, his robe removal by Miss Linda, the referee checking Adrian's boots & tights, and all of his other gimmicks were awesome. Adrian Street's 'gay gimmick', actually came aboout by accident. He'd been to America where he'd seen the more tanned/bodybuilder types (British wrestlers around the time were more in the Harley Race mould) and done some workouts, got a tan and had his hair bleached. When he returned to the UK, he thought he looked great, but the British wrestling fans of the era decided otherwise. He was angry initially, as he'd put some work into looking that way, but then he realised it was an instant heat machine, so he started making it more and more outlandish, without ever outright addressing his sexuality.
There's a great book about British wrestlers/wrestling, called 'The Wrestling', by Andrew Garfield out there which has mentions of Adrian as well as Dave 'Fit' Finlay, and Steve Regal among others :)

The music video for "I Want to Break Free" didn't kill Queen in the USA. It was banned by MTV before most people could see it and remained something that was hard to find until the internet era.

    • @jeffnettleton3858
      @jeffnettleton3858 2 роки тому +1

It was not banned by MTV. They played it quite often, when the album (The Works) was out, but eventually took it out of rotation. The only Queen video they wouldn't show was "Body Language."
Queen's career, in the US, had been on the downward slide, for a while. Rolling Stone regularly slagged them off and radio stations considered them old news. After "Another One Bites the Dust" was a hit, in 1980, they pretty much were ignored by most mainstream stations. MTV was about the only ones playing their later stuff though even they skipped some and didn't play anything after A Kind of Magic and mostly only ran "Princes of the Universe" to sell the film (Highlander) and because of the sequence where Lambert steps out of the film, onto the stage and faces off with Freddie.
Their last US tour was in 1982, for Hot Space, which didn't do well, in the US and had negative reaction, elsewhere, since it departed more from their previous work, with more funk and disco. MTV played "Under Pressure" and "Calling All Girls", in their early days, but balked on "Body Language.
The "I Want to BreaK Free" story is pure revisionism, much like that biopic.

You know wrestling all the way up into the late 90s, really was a perfect example of how most people thought of gay people. Now we all knew that there were some creepy dudes in wrestling, look at the ring boy incidents. But because anyone that was gay was so deeply closeted, anytime you heard about anything even remotely in the homosexual genre it involves molestation. So it really lead a lot of fans to make the connection between homosexuality and being incredibly creepy if not a sexual predator. It's no one's fault this happened, and I think more over that statement can be expressed for the whole of America.
That also perfectly explains the mindset of a lot of individuals over the age of 60, we use the phrase recruiting, in reference to homosexuals. As if they have to recruit new homosexuals, because in their mind it's so connected with predatory behavior. Not saying it's right just saying it's something I've noticed.

Coming from England he was used to driving an hour between towns.

They hate Adrian then they may end up hating all homosexual's in that way, people often follow patterns, herd mentality.
