Knife Expert Breaks Down Jason Bourne Kali Pen Fight Scene | Scenic Fights

- Pekiti Tirsia Kali Instructor Logan Lo breaks down the famous pen kali scene between Matt Damon and Nicky Naudé.
What makes this scene memorable among kali martial arts practitioner is:
1) Matt Damon specifically trained in the Filipino Martial Art Kali for the movie. Krav Maga is widely mistaken as being used in this film. It is not, as Matt Damon was trained by Kali/Jeet Kune Do expert Jeff Imada. The film's uncredited fight coordinators are Damon Caro and Jonathan Eusebio. Both are trained in Kali and Jeet Kune Do and neither are trained in the Krav Maga.
Here are the time-codes of each fight breakdown:

John Wick? Meet Jason Bic
lmao! This comment wins.
For those new to the channel though, Logan is a Pekiti Tirsia Kali Instructor.
He lost a bet and so I labeled him as a Pen Fighter, but he does teaches how to fight with a Pen using Kali skills!
Also, if there is any other Fight Scene you'd like to see us breakdown! Let us know in the comments below or on our Discord.

@@ScenicFights the fight between Jason Statham and Jet Li in War
@@ScenicFights Jackie vs benny in wheels on meals, please
@@armaankhokhar7651 We had the honor to meet Benny "The Jet" Urquidez and he had nothing but good things to say about Jackie Chan and that fight scene. It's one of the best martial arts fight scenes ever on film. Good choice.
I think it is worth noting that Bourne didn’t want to kill his assailant because he hadn’t regained his memory and was desperate for any information the attacker could potentially provide. That could be a plausible explanation for his choice of targets with the pen.
Yes, it's almost like movies often tell stories via fights... . For example the "hands down fighting stance" and body language especially by Castell may be a symbol for their brain washing like programming on aggression.
Wtf is uppercut palm strike?
I don’t see any mention of an “uppercut palm strike” in the comments, but I assume it would be similar in technique to a “regular” uppercut, only the strike would be delivered by the palm as opposed to the knuckles… Again, I’m only speculating and I have zero context to utilize in order to gain a better understanding.

Oh, I see, it was mentioned in the video itself. I thought you were asking me to clarify something I said. My mistake, many apologies.
I get jealous sometimes that Logan and Chad's intimacy is closer than I am with my wife. lol
Rum and jits makes everything better.
Perhaps watch our videos together with your wife?
*fanfic*
Have you tried practicing a Choke hold on your wife? 😂
Maybe that will raise it to another level?
As a high level Kali guy, I fucking love seeing your destructions and explanations you walked us through. Keep up the good work!
That means a lot to us! It's always awesome to get approval from kali practitioners, especially someone as high level as yourself. Much appreciated.
As other high level FMA guy ( not sure what that means ...) I don't need beginner lesson talk like "defanging the snake" via glancing cuts ( do that on a throat stab) or weaponless "gunting" via hit instead of catching the whole arm if the scissor contact works. I can understand that one does this " teaching by mistake " of the FMA on YT. But it gives me nothing.
People are different.
I gotta say Jeff Imada's fight choreography in the Bourne movies was awesome to watch.
I personally feel push daggers are very underrated when it comes to a back up or last resort tool. Especially a well made one. If there's no chance of creating distance for yourself, it's the way to go with a such a concealed piece. Love the break down by the way.
Totally agree! The push dagger is a great self defense tool. Glad you enjoy the breakdown. If you haven't yet, subscribe and check out our other breakdowns which include John Wick: ua-cam.com/video/xHrqHulxK7c/v-deo.html
Our boy Chad can break down fights but can't break down ways to a woman's heart it seems
I love this kind of analysis. Bruce Lee said there were techniques and movements good for movies, realistic fights are difficult to observe for the untrained eye, that's why many techniques look "convincing" but not realistic or strategically correct, like the hand stab. The longer and flashy the fight, the better for the producers. Great video as always.
Very true and Bruce Lee was a legend.
We had a fun time ranking his movies in this video: ua-cam.com/video/O_vG0fPPaQI/v-deo.html
"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
I love that this fight scene got drastically different grades from an MMA/BJJ perspective versus a Pekiti-Tirsia Kali perspective. To be honest though, I'm more used to the weapon work of a fight scene being worse than the grappling/hand-to-hand stuff. Good to see the Jason Bourne team at least got the improvised weapon aspect right. I've trained in improvised weapons for some time now, so it was nice to see that Kali takes a similar approach. Since a pen isn't really a traditional weapon, the mind has to be extra strong not to go too far with it, so I wonder how much Matt Damon had to train in order to NOT actually stab his scene partner with it.
Great comment and insight as always RLA! It seems ppl are liking the double grade so we might do it more. It really helps give the different perspectives between two different martial artist that train entirely different martial arts.
I know Jason Bourne legacy identify supremacy ultimatum are kali mainly and panantukan grappling according to jeff imada and Jason Bourne interview. And Jason Bourne 2016 is some krav maga and kali martial arts.
Do the bathroom fight scene from mission impossible fallout, it’s got clear action and camera work compared to the shaky cam in the bourne franchise
Yeah that's a good fight! There's that awesome moment when Henry Cavill does that thing where he reloads his biceps.
@@SchmokinJoe reloading the arms is tactically advantageous in that situation

Another great piece of knowledge and humor 👌🏻👌🏻💪🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah Chad and Logan can actually be funny lol.
Kali is so interesting, the hand movements and trapping remind of a mantis stance or style.
The movement of Kali (imo) is certainly nice on the eyes.
The speed that you two display, or act out, your edged weapons are scary sometimes. Really shows the trust you two have.
It scares us sometimes too! It happens so unexpectedly on camera but the weapons props are safe.

Can’t wait for you guys to react to the raid 2 kitchen fight scene, even though it’s not kali, but I am pretty damn sure that logan is able to break it down cause Silat and kali is in the same family, but there are different roots that makes them different
Yesss dude!
Yes! I would love to see a break down of any of movies with Iko Iwais.
YESS
Yes please, Raid breakdowns! Or better yet, what about Merantau? It's a less known Uwais movie from Gareth Evans and it would've been nice to see it, not just Raid.
I love kali, people seem to think it's all weapons. It's not. Extremely useful, like riding a bike, after a while you find a rhythm and can do all kinds of stuff. Because you can see the lines. It's weird.
Kali is a great martial arts! It's very practical in street fights. Once you get familiar with the kali sticks, you can use the same movement with any other improvised weapon you might find in the streets.
@@ScenicFights And you can actually do the same thing you do with the weapons with empty hands.
Loved the Thor/Loki bit:"I'll have words with him later". Priceless.
This isn't one particular scene, but maybe an interesting project for you guys would be the collective fights in the film Brawl In Cellblock 99. Both of you are very informative and entertaining and I look forward to whatever you put out, regardless of whether I've seen the film or not.

These breakdowns are much more thorough than others I’ve seen. Great content
Note to self: Don't punch faces with bare knuckles
Palm strike all the way!
@@ScenicFights oh yeah guys. I just remembered something. Would you consider reviewing manga fights?
Basically, it would be like the kengan ashura episode you did but with a comic book. I know one that actually explains "real" moves. I think the author was an underground / street fighter or something.
You had to be told this, the human head is a collection of dense bones,. the human hand lots of little ones.
You can load up a palm strike like a punch, put your bodyweight into it.
@@ufc990 Its all in the legs and hips for me
I really like how kali works, maybe explain more about it in the future? Appreciate your hardwork!!
Of course! All our breakdowns with Logan has some form of kali including, The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro: ua-cam.com/video/UxfkSrOq1BY/v-deo.html we will go even more in depth with kali in the future.
@Player Zero Yes! Most of the FMA (kali/eskrima/arnis) drills do require a partner since you're mostly working on flows and sinawali movements. Since it's a beginner class (most likely?), working with 1 partner is preferred to minimize surprises/injuries to get the basics out and work on techniques/speed. Learning to spar with different partners add to the spice since some people have "heavy hands"...
Awesome stuff as always!
Brilliant content; grateful for the breakdown by clearly experienced practitioners; delivery was insightful but accessible..and lighthearted
Damn, I love this channel. This is again a cool breakdown. Now I guess Bourne should teach Wick some weapons training and Wick should teach Bourne grappling and jiu-jitsu lol. Keep making more content guys. You're amazing. And pls do check out John Wick shinobi fight scene. Imo, the karambit work in that fight wasn't realistic at all but the grappling was. Would like to see you both break it down.

What I'd like to see a breakdown of is how realistic in general the knife fights are in the series on hbo max called "Warrior" (it's screenplay was adapted from a story written by Bruce Lee).
The series is basically all knife and sword fighting. It's about the hatchet men of the early Chinese mafia.

I love your guy's analysis
I adore the depth
There's a branch of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) that's generally called pugilism, which is old European unarmed combat. Boxing existed with gloves of course, but pugilism as it's studied now focuses more on the actual self-defense aspect. It uses tons of palm strikes. If you go back a hundred years or more and take modern medicine out of the equation, breaking your hand was a devastating wound that could leave you unable to perform a trade for the rest of your life. It could leave you worse than dead. The closed-fist fighting that we take for granted nowadays is an incredibly recent thing to become common. Great stuff guys

Your analysis of this scene shows a superb knowledge of empty handed as well as edged weapons combat. All in all, you are very dangerous Men in my humble opinion. Glad that you are Good Guys. Great video.😎👍🏾
Boxing is the best for street fights, I have never seen a boxer lose a fight in the streets.
Yeah, most people throw wild haymakers Which should be simple for any boxer
@@KaitouKaiju I studied boxing for my self defense and I have not had problems since, it gives you confidence, I once won a fight by simply ducking, slipping and rolling a dude's attacks. When I was young I had a friend who used to save us from bullies and thugs, the only weapon he used was a jab and a layback, dudes would fall flat out.

I think part of the suggestion of the scene (though the camera work doesn't help this at all) choreography of the rear naked choke, is that Jason Bourne is the one who prevents his fellow assassin from getting proper head placement or hooks. How might you have choreographed the scene to show the rear naked choke attempt as competent but still defeated by Jason Bourne to make his escape to turn the tables, showing Jason Bourne as the more skilled assassin?
That's a great point! We should have focused a bit more on what Jason did right in that instance to prevent the choke.
they are on par equal skills... just that bourne has keener instinct of MUST WIN...

Awesome breakdown, as always guys! When I worked LE, I carried a Cold Steel push dagger on my ankle inside my boot, in case someone was in my guard, with their legs above my duty belt. One of my friends on a different department, almost died in said situation, if she didn’t have backup. I worked alone most of the time, so, after that, if I got in the same situation, I could grab the dagger from my ankle, go for the ribs or the neck, given the severity of the situation.
It's a great and versatile self defense weapon that you can easily conceal. Thanks for sharing your story!
Yes! Finally it's here
What a bout breaking Down the last
Two fight Scenes in the night comes for us
That arm twist at 4:50 looks like it was _supposed_ to be an Aikido-inspired 2-joint lock. With the correct grip on the wrist joint and enough torsion (to apply pressure to the elbow joint and lock it), Jason would have been able to prevent the attacker from standing and/or circling him, and it would be easy to apply more pressure to cause pain, or even to break the elbow (which is honestly what he should have done in the first place, if he was able to catch his arm like that).
Unfortunately, as you mentioned, that elbow was not being controlled at all... there wasn't enough torsion or pressure being applied to either joint (seeing as the attacker was able to maintain his grip on the weapon), not to mention Jason's stance was *very* sloppy. All in all, a good idea using Aikido like that, but poorly executed/choreographed.

@@ScenicFights lol be careful. An interesting side note, the first time I actually reconized Kali being used is by Ernie Reyes Jr. In The Rundown, & that's only because I recognized Reyes Jr. from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, as well as Surf Ninjas, which also had his dad in it, Ernie Reyes Sr.
Another Martial art that seems to get little notice (however that is changing) is Silat from Indonesia. Obviously anything with Iko Uwais will have Silat in it (since he's a practitioner of it), such as the Raid movies, Merantau, the Night Comes for Us, & an interesting one that has Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, & Tiger Chen, Triple Threat.
Another interesting breakdown would be the HBO show The Warrior, which is kinda an ode to Bruce Lee

Guys, this was a great breakdown and i liek the fact you both had opposing views by looking at the weapons, striking and grappling. I like this approach. I have always been a little skeptical of push daggers, they always seemed a clumsy weapon for a lack of training, this kinda of adds to this theory. KEEP IT UP!
Push Daggers are convenient for strikers without weapon backgrounds, but again, not sure why anyone would want to carry one when better options are available. With that being said, we will do more breakdowns with Chad/Logan giving their grades respectively. There are always many opposing sides in how fight scenes should be done.
@@ScenicFights Ha i'll stick with a good quality blade.
Yeah that would be great to see thanks.
Im addicted to this channel
Sounds like a good addiction. Now get your friends addicted too and have them subscribe so we can make these faster for you! Much appreciated. Is there any other martial arts fight scene that you'd like to see us breakdown next?
Really good analysis. Plus the occasional funny comments are good too. 😂
Keep it up guys.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed our breakdowns. If there are any other fight scenes you'd like to see us breakdown, please let us know!
@@ScenicFights - Sure brother.
How about analysing the Japanese - Ruoroni Kenshin series of movies with Takeru Satoh, if you haven’t done that one yet.
Or what about the Ninja Assassin (2008) with the Korean “Rain”?
This was my favorite fight.
I like to think that Jason knew he was better. He didn't finish the fight with the pen because he wanted to interrogate. As he does in the next part
Narratively, for sure. Jason let him live so that he can interrogate with. It's a fantastic fight scene.
One of these days this channel will blow up. Not in the bad way. In the recognition of quality content way. Keep it up Scenic Fights.
Thanks as always Kenneth for the encouragement and blessings! We just take it video by video and see where we go from there. We appreciate the constant support. Is there any other fight scene that you'd like us to breakdown next?
@@ScenicFights you guys have already showcased a lot of my favorite action movies. I'm impressed by your selections already but I'd love some more indepth stuff with Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais. Some fun scenes off the top of my head are the hallway scene in Old Boy (the original), another iconic hallway scene in The Raid (which you guys touched on it already), and Hemsworth vs. Randeep Hooda in Extraction.
5:32 Come on, you aren't that old. you should try it.
We need Logan healthy and able for more breakdowns. Can't have him pulling his back on us lol.
My back hurts just reading this.
An interesting thing I noted is that there's a lot of Karate -Kali crossover. In my Karate class we even did some Kali drills with sticks, and some similar flow drills with empty hands.
I remember being a kid and watching him mess that guy up with the pen, I was shook for week 😂
What an excellent fight scene in an near perfect trilogy (we like to pretend these movies end here). Only one that rivals this pen scene is the fight with Desh in Bourne Ultimatum.
Very cool breakdown of a kinetic, brutal fight!
Edit: 8:51 - hell yeah, Undertaker reference!
I really only liked the first one because I just hate that story-tellers use the death of a woman to move the man's story forward. It's lame and overused.
I guess John Wick brought a twist to that with a dog ;)
@@logan607 Fully agree that it is a trope that is done to death. I appreciate the Borne trilogy provided some justification as the bad guy didn't kill the girl to get a rise out of our hero, but it was a genuine case of mistaken identity.
Can agree that first is best overall!
