i guess franny's mom granny is not going to run any time soon. It is a shame, but then again, a freshly rebuilt and painted 3406 looks so good. 20 grand later.....
J Check the alternator I had one with a 5ek cat smoked the starter trying to get it started after it set for a year. Alternator was locked up belt was turning but put enough drag on it that it wouldn't start .took off the belt fired right up lol
I don’t know if you can hear it. But it’s got a squeak when your cranking it. It sounds like no oil in the main bearings to me. I think it was blown up and that’s why they start taking parts.
James..I wouldn't have bought that one...you could have found a much better example in auto truck trader or perhaps an auction..the fact that it needs a transmission...and rear differentials..would have sent me running...then it was rained in...big foots cousin "Nelly " moved in...the squirrel landlord "Charles" is charging rent...and it's got lots of parts missing...expensive parts...well I hope it starts..I'm watching you right now..good luck 😉

One thing to check, without the cutout switches, are the jakes on. Could be a good core for a rebuild. That truck would be an awesome single axle to pull a toy hauler or camper.
Mornin . I'd set it out by the road like some people do with old farm equipment. That way when people drive by they have something cool to look at , an talk about as they drive by !
Dayum…. You know your a professional when you can do the quick head nod and have your readers land perfectly on your 👃 to check something real quick 😂😂😂😂! Love it man! I think this truck would be a nice looking rig man!
Thats the problem with our mechanics, always guessing and positively believe something is wrong without being 100% sure and end up charging a customer for something that wasn’t even close.
It’s hard for most people that don’t anything about how an engine works, also the space and tools are a very big obstacle, I know plenty of guys form around my town that have to pay a guy who claims to know and you can’t be stopping your truck for a whole month, you usually trust that the mechanics are going to help you 100%
I think that may be one of my old trucks 😂 bought that exact truck back in 1999 at Freightliner of Chattanooga for 31k in mint condition. Can’t remember which company it came from but it was a nice ride at the time 😃
That is awesome piece of equipment I've never seen one I'm sorry in a long time like this one what's that thing got a super sleeper on it that is a sweet piece of equipment I just seen this one Petty God bless you and family and Miss Jessica have a wonderful holiday
It needs new fuel filters and prime it until the pump gets hard.. loosen up one filter then pump to pump out the air then tighten it up and loosen the other one and do the same until the pump gets really hard to pump .
Hello there! I’m 14 and I also replaced my starter, on my 1979 international 4070b transtar 2 eagle! I worked since I was 11 and got 7,000 to buy it! I replaced the starter sorta by my self besides putting the new one back In because I didn’t know you had to tighten Certain bolts. Thanks if you read this!
Hey that’s awesome. I started young too. Glad to see younger guys getting involved. Sounds like a nice truck. Maybe I’ll bump into ya at a show someplace
Looks like you have room for a lift axle. You whizzed past the rear pretty quick, but the frame looks like a single rail with the heavier rail. Air ride, not much rust, something to work with. If you need room on the sides, change out those porches under the doors. They look to be about 9ft. wide.
No oil coming up ? It rolled over I don’t know how. I think it grabbed a bearing. I think I heard it hit once. I’m glad it didn’t start. I don’t think it would have run long. I think they got lucky it didn’t throw a rod. At least you still might have a rebuildable engine . How many miles it it showing. I was really rooting for you on the engine. This truck was gutted for a reason. You still have many options . She will be back on the road one day thanks to you and your wife. Take care Brother Trucker.
I know you can do it, you went into that big cam top end with excellent results. Half the time I see people throw every thing away and build the whole thing new top to bottom and I think what a waste. I've built complete 1950's Triumph motorcycle engines using cast off components more than once. New bearings rings and seals, but every thing else was used. Have had no issues. Your rebuilds need not cost the earth either.
I thought she was going to fire up that one time but I kno you will get back to it when you can as usual great content waiting to see this one get worked on
With it being a 94, check the prefix on the engine, it could be a 3406C. I have a 93 FLD with a Cat. If it is a 4CK prefix it's a C, which has wider rod journals. Also does it have a solid rod going to the side of the pump, or a round unit with wires going to it? If it has wires, that is a PEEC system, electronic throttle and timing control. It's not a bad system, just finicky and different to deal with. A lot of guys hate them cuz they can't play with the pump for stupid power numbers.
In my opinion this purchase was not a mistake if I had the money in would play $100000 for that thing I love old trucks like that I we have one on the farm I live on!
Well you did most everything you could. I see you got the window up. It sucks you smoked a starter. Still looks to me like there’s an electrical issue seems like it’s smoking the wires or I’m seeing a lot of smoke coming from somewhere. You should’ve had oil pouring out of turbo feed line for as much as you cranked it. I’m thinking it’s an electrical problem because I literally had a truck once that if it sat more than 4 hours you’d have to crank on that starter for about 15 minutes straight. And that starter would crank about the same the whole time. I put a hand fuel pump on it so I could hand prime it that helped. I eventually got it fixed right with quite a few dollars spent at Caterpillar. Looks like there are issues with this engine internally so it’s hard to say where to go with it. Could be something to see what’s going on under the top cover. Take it off and roll it over and see if everything is moving and nothing is broken. If that valve is hanging down could’ve damaged the piston. Stinks because that looks to be a nice truck.
Ya I’ve been thinking about it since filming this video. I have a few ideas. Maybe we will pop the pan off and have a look inside Thanks for always watching and giving me some feedback and ideas. I appreciate ya
@@JamesPretty I wanna see it run too. Those are still a really good engine durable and reliable. That one looks like it had multiple issues so it’s really hard to figure out where to go with it. I think you’ll have to look inside to help find out what is wrong. I used to drive an 3406E model that dropped a valve and they ended up in framing it they said a couple of keepers failed top side of the engine. That’s why I think top cover. But I’m just a driver actually I hope I’m wrong cause that’s a lot of work. I do wonder with that timing advance missing how much that affects the problem. And with the pump being open missing lines what effect that has.
Well, it looks like you have a ways to go to get up to zero on that one. On the other hand, it looks like there is good bones there to work with. I don’t envy you cleaning out the cab and sleeper, though. Stick with it, that will make a fine truck. Take care.
James, I know how bad a guy likes to just catch a break and you know someone held back stuff when it was sold to you. I kinda thought about if that starter is dying anyhow, throw 24 volts at it and see if oil could still be made to come.... that doesn't heal stuck valves or other things that are disabled.. I have seen one run and it only was hitting solid on two with a try on maybe some others... that truck had been tow started so it was not going to move or get out of its own way. They kept at it with different vudu tricks and after some time... a lot of time had passed, it just got better till it ran but this was a guy who had nothing but time to burn. Is it possible to pull a plug out of one of the oil journals on the block and force oil through some of the engine meaning possibly to the crank and cam?
Hey James that really sucks You can't save Them all brother You need to kick this one to the curb and sell it For what you got in it Besides you got enough work sitting in your driveway right now To last you a couple of years Or longer to get the rest of your trucks done
Well hopefully you can sell some of the parts off of it get some of your money back great video sorry about the bad luck that just sucks I don't like to see that happened to anybody Thanks for the videos When I wrote this I thought it was the end of the video at the 1st end of the 1st day I got a hand it to you Is 4 really sticking to it I've been thrown rocks at it for a second long before
When you was trying to crank it, I did see a belt moving a little. And the harmonic balancer.
Ya I eventually got it to turn. But it’s got some spin bearings
Moment I saw her I thought the tired ol’ girl needs love. Hope you give it to her.

When u was pushing the button to start, it was pushing something out right behind the left steer tire. Some kind of fluid.

You’ve got the perfect candidate there for the buzzin dozen if it won’t fit in the cab over
Never anything simple about a Cat. It's a builder if the frame is solid around the 5th wheel. A DD92 with a 13 double overdrive would be the solution.
