The remaster did take a few steps back: • Explosions look horrible and were especially bad at launch • Some of the new textures look off, such as making the Falcon 2 almost look slimy or something • Manual aiming controls feel less precise than on the N64 even with the added advanced control options; they made no effort to enhance them for modern controllers and instead apparently directly ported the sensitivity that was based off of the N64 controller • Some controls are really awkward and unreliable like the previous weapon command in the Duty Calls layout • They removed the ability to swap between the two main menus when you load the game, forcing players to close the menu and reopen it in order to access it • The echo sound effect and something about the audiovisual changes make guns feel weaker than they do on the N64 (this is noticeable when playing both versions close together) • Menus take much longer to navigate and are less intuitive due to having to sign in to even play offline MP and other changes • The unlock system, which was great in the original, was largely scrapped in favor of making many things available from the start, which reduces the experience of constantly unlocking new things and making the entire plot readable before players start the first mission • Players can no longer swap multiplayer bodies and heads, limiting their customization options (unless you hold a bumper while switching, which the game doesn't tell you) • Progress for the added rewards was bugged and reset for me at least once But it's definitely still worth owning because of the mostly enhanced textures and framerate and the GoldenEye weapons now being usable in MP. I'm glad that I own both and would also buy a full remake if one was made, preferably by a company much more competent than Rare or 4J.
Look at an explosion from a grenade/rocket on the N64 version and then the remastered version, and the difference will be clear. In this video, you can see an N64 explosion at 1:10: ua-cam.com/video/JCCFpc0BNnk/v-deo.html And a 360 explosion in this video at 4:52: ua-cam.com/video/GtHX_RkuSdw/v-deo.html I tried to find better footage, but that's what I was able to find. They're similar, but the 360 version looks wispy or something by comparison. You can swap between the menus, but you have to back out of the main menu at some point when it loads to be able to swap between the two panes. You can still swap some heads, but in the N64 version you could use any head with any body.
The update increased the duration of the explosions, but they still look more transparent. Not terrible, but they look better on the N64 IMO. Guns also feel a bit weaker for me on the 360 version, possibly because of the echo effect and/or some other audiovisual things, although I'm thankful that they added the GE weapons in MP. You can switch between the menus, but you have to exit and reopen the menu first if you choose Play Game. Between this, instances of having to sign into a profile every time the combat simulator is selected even to play offline MP (which takes a long time, at least on my 360), and menu options like cheats being more buried IIRC, the menus are more sluggish by comparison and could've been designed a bit better in this version. The combat simulator menu is also awkwardly designed, and it no longer saves challenge setups if you switch to advanced setup. The menus certainly aren't a deal-breaker, but they are a step back. I didn't know about being able to use any head if you hold the right bumper. I see that it only holds the current head, and there's no in-game prompt showing that this is an option. At least there's a way to do it (and I learned something new), although it's another step back from the original albeit a very minor one. My biggest complaint with the remaster, though, is how they handled the aiming controls. But overall I'm glad that the remaster exists. I wish a competent developer would do a full remake (in a modern engine but very similar to the original in terms of design, unlocks, gameplay, features, etc.) with no cut content and with modernized controls that feel smooth, responsive, and reliable with default settings but are also fully customizable. Options to select original or updated graphics, voices, sounds, etc. individually would let players use the original if they don't like the new assets.
@@SwCreators And still highly addictive. @A Gentleman Factor 5 were probably the most advanced technical wizards in that era and onto Gamecube before disappearing. They worked out albeit towards the end of the N64's life and convincing Nintendo that by rewriting the microcode to stream from cartridge instead of forcing developers to constantly load into the main ram (there was a memory controller fault which slowed the system down and was the main culprit for frame issues) performance could be more than doubled. If Perfect Dark was streamed and the Z buffer disabled alone, that is a massive performance gain waiting.
