One note about the standard drill bits leaving burrs - if you drill a small pilot hole ahead of time, then the hole with the 13/64 bit will not leave burrs behind. Twice as many presses, but it solves the problem for the more common bit.
That's actually a great tip all around. I used to just drill once until a coworker said use a small drill first and itll go faster. I'm like no way, but there's some truth to that especially if ya got to drill half inch or bigger holes on thick metal.
When I get my jars I cut the plastic off the top of the package and then I drill all my holes while they're still on the jars and it works super easy with a hand drill like that
What I’ve always done is put the lid on top of the ring, get a decent sized nail and one tap with a hammer for each hole. It goes right through, the only problem is the hole can be almost square shaped. I knew this technique but of course i just bought plastic lids for my mason jars and wanted to try out some of those glad style quart PP5 screw on containers. They were 3 for $2 so no biggie if it’s a loss. I forgot to check for a gasket type seal, but if not I’ll just parafilm it.
Thanks for the great video. I will add one thing on syringe filters. They make them with 4 different filter materials. It is important to get the ones made out of PTFE. They can withstand the temperature of pressure cooking. The other 3 types melt and then the filter cannot breathe.
I agree on using only metal lids. I'm using a hand punch to make the holes, no sharp burrs. A couple of things I'd recommend. Use a wood block under the lid to provide backing. Better yet, make a jig that helps place/locate the lid in position on the drill press. Use a wood block and add a couple of strips of molding on top (glue them down). The two molding strips are placed at right angle so that when the lid is slid in the depth of the hole is quickly located from the edge of the lid. The jig will help speed the hole making process up and yield repeatable hole placement. The jig assembly is clamped down to the drill press table.
Exactly what I have done after a drillbit grabs the metal and starts spinning trying to remove fingers. Definitely use a jig and a piece of wood underneath to drill into .
You sharing all your knowledge is so helpful! So the syringe filter is only for gas exchange? BTW, was a journeyman machinist, and saw a guy have his little finger pulled off his hand, when using gloves for hot chips. Suggestion: Use a non-lid-deforming clamp/block that you can drill right through to make holes in the lids (use scrap wood/plastic/aluminum, etc block to distribute clamp load on lid) clamp multiple lids together, and use a wood/plastic sacrificial block below the lid too, even if you do one at a time. The back-support on the drill breaking through the lid will vastly reduce the lid's hole deformation. If you clamp the block so the drill goes through the same hole, it will also drastically reduce burrs and deformation. The clamp will also mitigate the danger of spinning lids, etc. You should be able to do 50 lids at a time easily. You are the mushroom master for sure, so I'm happy to give you a couple tips, if you're interested. Keep up the great work!
Hey tip of advice when using a hand drill for your lids. Screw the lid on the jar!! Then Drill!! Its saved me from kinking or bending my lids and bands
I ordered a 1/2 inch "disk cutter" punch from Amazon and was able to get a lot cleaner hole than I could with the drill bit. I got some 9" hole punching pliers for the syringe filter hole. It was designed for punching holes in leather but made a lot cleaner hole than the drill bit also once I got the hang of it.
never use gloves when handling a drill press. If the drill catches on your glove you can loose fingers. if you are afraid off spinning disks make a jig out of wood that the lock fits in thats easy to hold either in a vice or by hand
when drilling lids by hand, you can use a brad point for both holes, i find it a lot safer and cleaner running the drill in reverse and at half speed ( play with it and find your prefered speed). I found this to be a great video as well as all of the other ones I have watched, and has been a great help Big Thanks Mossey
Just a thought, what about filling the grey SHIP with RTV silicone if you need it to hold up longer but still be cheap AF, cuz making 100 jars at .80 a piece adds up quick. When you could make 100 for $10 plus RTV silicone which 95% of people growing mushrooms have already anyways.
I've watched three of your videos now , I had to sub up, cuz man you just make THE best info packed videos I think I've ever seen. Soo glad I stumbled upon your channel yesterday . Problem is now I'm having trouble tearing myself away to get something done tho lol Damb !! Seriously though thanks , I appreciate you taking the time.
The silicone or rubber rings are so fussy! Glad I'm not the only one. Agree on widemouth being easier for us big-handed folks! So many helpful tips here. THANK YOU for posting this!
Yooo im pretty sure you won’t read this but thank you soo much I felt in love with mycology 😅 and now I’m actually doing it :) lots of fails but I’m keep going at it.
Agree on the plastic lids. I just got some and they don't work that well. And it's so much trouble making holes in them. I can make holes in a metal lid in a few seconds with a spike of some sort and a hammer. You probably don't need a drill press at all.
Love your videos man, you come off very sincere and I love that you take the time to explain things a little more in depth. Keep it up dude, you're doing great.
The term for gloves you need to look for is "Class 2 Cut Resistant Gloves." Any gloves in this category will be just fine for protecting your hands as far as PPE goes
You make a great point about how cheap lids are. I've been wondering why it seems like such a major sticking point for people, especially beginners. Obviously a newbie will want to start as cheap and simple as possible. But i think it's deeper than that. Lids are such a common item, and we're deeply familiar with how important it is for them to be unmodified. Then to go buy something, just to drill holes in it and make it 'useless' for it's "Typical" purpose, it's just a weird sort of thing to mentally overcome, particularly for people who really hate to waste things. even though it's not wasteful at all if it serves it's purpose to your needs. Combine that with how important a good lid is for growing. Add in all the different opinions and claims. And then throw in how many or few lids you might need to make, and remake, all while your mushrooms are depending on a good lid, it's a weird thing for people! it's a funny thing to watch and experience. The lids really are so stupidly cheap. But for a newbie, having to go out and buy/make 20+ lids that might not even work for you, just to find out you need a different material and more lids to try again, ending up with a pile of garbage lids that can't be used, etcetc, I can see how it would be so daunting! even if in reality they're so so cheap and stupidly helpful in the hobby! and although drilling all those holes can seem like a big project (and it IS), it's also stupidly simple and the time you spend making the lids makes your life so much easier down the road. i'm only just now getting some oysters fruiting, so i'm still fairly new to the hobby, yet i'm struggling with the weird mental side of it all! growing myc really shines a spotlight on your mental state. gives a great way to observe negative patterns or beliefs you might have. i already knew the magic ones were incredible teachers, i guess i just didn't realize that ALL mushrooms were that way! so given all that, i can see why lids become such a weird sticking point for people. a lot of people struggle with the everyday value of things. it's hard for us to truly appreciate it all! you get the cheap-skates who have to let go of the value of pennies (like accepting how stupidly cheap lids are lol!), and you get the loose-pockets who end up respecting the power of a dollar more (realizing how much you can grow for so little, and being able to see how much MORE you could have gotten if you were more money conscious). etc. love it. thanks for all the videos!
Speaking of money and purchasing power if money was backed or redeemable with gold and silver then ya we’d have good purchasing power. Inflation is not low. For some people though it is nice to DIY or have DIY projects not just to save money, but to grow and learn yourself. Honestly I think a lot of channels are making way more money by educating people because then people feel like oh that guy is knowledgeable I’ll buy from them. Even if people make their own lids they’re far more likely to buy LC from mossy creek. North spore does similar things. I watched a girl inoculate logs and was talking how north spore taught her and she bought stuff from them. It’s sort of like freemium. Companies offer free stuff and then people can upgrade or pay money. It’s a great marketing and selling tool.
Hey guys! First, congratulations on the construction project. I watched this video almost a year ago and I've been making lids every since. Thank you! You mentioned the syringe filters go bad after a while; how long before one should replace them?
I really appreciate your information videos. If you could make one making pre mixed liquid culture from shroom supply in that exact jar using does lids.
I enjoyed the video, very informative. I really like the way you explain things in your videos. One thing I’d like to mention. I’ve worked as a machinist in my time. You should never ever wear gloves while that type of equipment. The force of the spindle could grab a hold of the material and rip your fingers off right off. Never wear gloves while using a manual mill, lathe, drill press, CNC, etc. Extremely dangerous.
Dont forget to file the edges of those holes in the metal can lids too! Especially if youre making your own injection ports with silicone. I totally subbed today for that winning personality and exhaustive information! Great job!
I found a nice way to avoid tops spinning when I drill the holes...I mount the cap to a hard plastic bottle and tightn it down with it's ring. A bit slower, but it's really safe!
Thanks for making this video! There is also a drill bit called a “step bit” It’s shaped like a cone. They work really well and make a clean hole. Harbor freight. Edit: I just used the forstner bit and it works great as well!
There is an air gap when freezing so the temp change doesn't cause the jar to explode...just fyi...I only think about that stuff bc I live in az and we have the opposite issue but it's drastic temp change regardless
U need air exchange for freezing cause the water expands and if it can't push air out, it could possibly explode the jar and send glass shrapnel all over
I've broke quite a few mason jars freezing bone broth before I invested in proper containers. They dont explode but crack badly. Sad thing is I toss them in woods to thaw then pick up glass but one time a critter found them first and blood was sprinkled all over
Hay Andrew i bought everything off of the Amazon list. I made a top. But I noticed the self healing injection port is a little loose and not tight. Also the syringe filter fits alittle loose as well.
use the red heat resistant glue to seal it,some even use it as the self healing injection port. its called RTV and its red [high temp. gasket Maker] good for pressure cooking uses..
Im looking to get into growing mushrooms next month (my uni finals end so I will be free for 6 months), I would really appreciate a video with an overview of all the different stages you go through to end up with mushrooms. The videos I have seen about mycology and lab work are either aimed at actual lab mycologists and waaaay too technical for me to follow, or at absolute beginners and completely prescriptive with the technique without giving any reasoning. Your videos are right in the middle where I can understand what you are doing and your reasoning, thats why I like them so much.
Just so you know maybe you could use a different affiliate link for the drill press, that’s the only link I can’t get to work.. maybe it’s no longer available.. no biggie just didn’t know if you could substitute so people can still use an affiliate link for you to purchase their drill press. Also could you please share your Amazon syringe filter link or brand.. I can not find a pink kind anywhere on Amazon! I absolutely love your videos, knowledge, and passion to share!
Just a quick question and by the way great video.. When my wife a can using a pressure cooker we can only use the lid insert once then it has to be thrown away. Are you saying that we can use the lids multiple times.
Thanks for the video! My first batch of LC broth using plastic lids 10/10 contaminated. Cooked 30 min @ 15 PSI. Time to take the time and make my own. Can you reuse the lids?
you can use a small clamp and a piece of wood instead of a drill press :) save that $$$ for more substrate.. ALSO you can use parafilm or a strip of saranwrap to seal the white plastic lids.
This is an old video, but I felt I should still mention this. Do not wear gloves while operating the drill press or any other rotating/pulling type function in the metal shop. You are Better off using a clamp or something. We are taught in sheet metal fabrication that major injuries happen when shop equipment snags and sucks in gloved hands, we are taught not to wear gloves when using stuff like this or rollers for example. They may save some regular nicks and cuts, but could one day cause a major injury. use a clamp or vise grips to hold the lids. I really appreciate your content, I have learned a ton from you, thought I would pass on a bit of my knowledge lol.
So what do you do if the filters don't fit snuggly into the 13/64 bit drilled hole? The gasket maker seems be holding them in but it is definitely not snug and before the gasket maker sets the filters can spin freely
do you have a particular jar that you would suggest? I can find all sorts of info on the lids, but i've never dealt with mason jars or canning, I have no idea what jar can match with the premade lids. I cant make my own because i dont have to tools, and dont really want to invest in the tools for just one job, so matching the lids to the jar is my main concern.
Hey mossy creek. I just found a company recently that would make your process much more simple. you would only have to use one drill size for the two holes, and its peel and stick. You should check them out. microppose I hope it helps.
There was some testing done a few years ago regarding proper GE when using seryinge filters, ptfe. 22 um like the biomed ones, and they were saying that it restricts GE and micropore/tyvek/ polyfill would be better. Any ideas on that? Did you notice slower colonization times using the filters?
Perfect I buy my spaghetti sauce in those jarsAnd it only cost like $2.50 or something like that so I get sauce and FREE jars! (i’m shocked I even buy spaghetti sauce because my star sauce sucks but Prego farmers stand is amazing it taste like homemade spaghetti sauce! I digress… ) ...They have measurements on the side so I saved them to use for glasses instead of buying glasses and for measuring when baking or whatever... now I can use them for my mushrooms too! FYI you need Air exchange for freezing because when it expands it will explode the jar if you don’t. Just an improvement to suggest possibly.. is that you could use silicone sealant for your hole at the top and then just stick your needle through it and it will close when you pull it out…?
How big are your syringe filters? I see 13mm and 25mm 22 micron on Amazon. Good tip on the PTFE if you are using a pressure cooker. I have used a 3/8 arch punch on tin lids on a 2x4. The punch cuts a nice hole with no burrs.
Something my mentors taught me was to use high temp enamal white spray paint. Do 2 coats in between them take a file and wear the edges down so you dont get enamal in yur spawn. Fuck poly fill. I use multiple layers of micro pore tape and rtc silicone.
You shouldn't wear gloves of any kind when using a drill press. You get one little bit of that glove caught on the drill bit and you will not have a good day. Just saying safety first when using industrial equipment!
Though I get the quality of the injector points over rtv, I'm not understanding the point of the filter disks. One could just drill a hole and cover with micropore tape. Is it simply the issue that the micropore tape could get wet when tilting the jar? That could be the issue with micropore.
I must be missing something. Why is it good to have two methods of injection available? and don't you need to have a way to allow FAE such as polyfill ?
does it matter whether the filters are 13 in diameter or 25 , ? cant tell from the pictures,,, I already ordered , so i hope they are 25 in diameter by 22 um....I was estimating from your thumb size..LOL
other hole is silicone for injecting with syringe.. what the purpose with other hole? im skipping video a bit so i dont get everything perfectly if you explain it there.
If one of your LC jars can make 40-50 10mL syringes. How long will the self healing injector port(SHIP) last, will it need to be replaced at say 30 uses being poked that many times, or are they good for the entire use of the LC jar and when you make another batch of LC replace it then? Because each time you poke the SHIP you are taking a small chunk of it out.

Is micropore tape still good?
We don't extract the culture through them at all? Just fir air?
I read that PES Membranes withstand temperature up to 180C easily.

So is it possible to use a regular drill? I want to do it with a press but I can’t afford one at the moment!

Hi Andrew. Great video thanks! One question. Do you use the lid just once?
After how long should we change the syringe filter. Are those reused regularly.
What size of filter are you using 13 or 25mm ?
That's what I'm wondering too! 13mm is close to half an inch and 25mm is close to an inch, but it's hard to til for sure which ones he is using.
Can the filters or injection ports be reused? Hopefully the injection ports can be found in bulk.
How long these syringe filter last ? Do we need to change every batch or we can use same filter over and over for multiple batch.
Awesome!!🎁
Thank you! Cheers!
you can use a small clamp and a piece of wood instead of a drill press :) save that $$$ for more substrate.. ALSO you can use parafilm or a strip of saranwrap to seal the white plastic lids.
I'm not kinky so i'll pass on the gasket and go right to the metal lids. METALLLLL!!!
I've used those peel and stick filters on my lids and I love them!
There was some testing done a few years ago regarding proper GE when using seryinge filters, ptfe. 22 um like the biomed ones, and they were saying that it restricts GE and micropore/tyvek/ polyfill would be better. Any ideas on that? Did you notice slower colonization times using the filters?
I wish I’d saw this before I did 12 grain jars and 25 lc jars only to learn it on my own. Complete disaster.
@@Serpentofthegarden I know that feeling. Oh so well
Interesting is there a link
Why is the syringe filter needed vs like a sticker filter? Do you ever use it to pull from at all?
@mossy creek mushrooms. What size syringe filter did you use on your jars. The 13mm or the 25mm
That's what I'm wondering too! 13mm is close to half an inch and 25mm is close to an inch, but it's hard to til for sure which ones he is using.
walmart plastic lids seal up fine for me so far>?
Tuna little bead of silicone or RTV sealant on the inside to hold the gasket! Also instead of plastic lids use stainless steel lids they look GREAT!
I used code Mossy and it worked great!
Great to hear!
Hey, is using micro-pore tape viable instead of that red and white gas exchange thing?
Something my mentors taught me was to use high temp enamal white spray paint. Do 2 coats in between them take a file and wear the edges down so you dont get enamal in yur spawn. Fuck poly fill. I use multiple layers of micro pore tape and rtc silicone.
so the silicone IS necessary? even if the vents and ports are tight?
Thank you for all your info
You shouldn't wear gloves of any kind when using a drill press. You get one little bit of that glove caught on the drill bit and you will not have a good day. Just saying safety first when using industrial equipment!
What's a better suggestion for protecting fingers against spinning metal lid? Thanks!
@@minkusmaz a clamp
@@cameronkamber6137 So simple. Thanks Cameron 👍👍
or you can use metal gloves .
Same goes for mitre saws, etc. Better some ripped skin than a hand yanked into a saw blade.
Though I get the quality of the injector points over rtv, I'm not understanding the point of the filter disks. One could just drill a hole and cover with micropore tape. Is it simply the issue that the micropore tape could get wet when tilting the jar? That could be the issue with micropore.
When using a drill press- get rid of the gloves , use a clamp system or use your fingers if your hand is strong enough to clamp the lid down
I must be missing something. Why is it good to have two methods of injection available? and don't you need to have a way to allow FAE such as polyfill ?
Love the video love the beard mushlove
Do you have a problem with rust where the holes are drilled?
Thank you for the info. May I ask How can you turn 1 syringe into 40 syringes??
Can you provide the Amazon link to your syringe filters? Is the company linktor?
Nice bind rune on the inside of the lid lol..great video..
Well thanks for sharing, from Argentina I toast for that mate!
A whole punch works great for making holes in metal lids.
Thanks bro! Much love
Any time!
does it matter whether the filters are 13 in diameter or 25 , ? cant tell from the pictures,,, I already ordered , so i hope they are 25 in diameter by 22 um....I was estimating from your thumb size..LOL
Where they 13 or 25 ?
What diameter syringe filter size is used here?
Can anyone mention the two types of drill bits needed for these lids?
I appreciate the shared knowledge and opinion. Keep up the good service
The orange self healing injector ports are called tiger tops in the medical field. Fiance is a nurse and she corrects me every time lol.
Red top
Tiger top is red/orange and black
Thanks so much for your videos
Glad you like them!
use a single hole paper punch
Just wondering should I keep my liquid culture in the dark or just in a reg lighted room be ok.
doesn’t matter
Congrats! What mushroom grower forums are you active on???
We have a group on Facebook and a few other groups on Facebook.
other hole is silicone for injecting with syringe..
what the purpose with other hole? im skipping video a bit so i dont get everything perfectly if you explain it there.
We just make a whole new lid each time we make up a jar of LC. You can reuse the lid a few times, but the injector port should be replaced each time.
I have a question,, i need to know if I can sterilize liquid culture at 12 psi.. Help,,,, ohhhh i got all those lid features,, hagd
Yes. Liquid is easier to sterilize than solids. You could even steam it, but pressure cooker will be faster.
