  • In 1976 my parents purchased a 17' travel trailer after being invited to go camping with several families from our church. The first campground we visited was Smokemont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and from that point we were hooked on camping. After growing up camping at Smokemont for all those years, it is still my favorite place to camp.
    Smokemont campground is located five miles north of Cherokee on US 441, just inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Smokemont Campground is situated along side the Oconaluftee River. Smokemont offers group camping and 138 campsites for primitive camping with no water, power, or sewer hookups.
    Smokemont Riding Stable is adjacent to the campground. They offer trail rides for ages five years and up and they welcome groups. They have a one hour, two and a half hour, and a four hour ride. Also available for any age are wagon rides. Call 828-497-2373 for rates and availability.
    Things you should know:
    All food, drinks, and equipment used to prepare and store food must be kept sealed in a vehicle or in a camping unit constructed of solid, non-pliable material or as otherwise directed at all times when not in use.
    Only heat treated firewood which is in its original packaging and bears a certification from the USDA or a state agency may be brought into the park.
    Campfires are permitted only in fire grates.
    Pets are allowed in the campground but must be confined or on a six foot leash. Pets are not allowed on trails and should not be left unattended.
    RV sewage must be drained at a dump station. Showers and utility hook ups are not available in the park.
    Quiet hours are in effect from 10 PM to 6 AM and generator use is prohibited from 8 PM to 8 AM.
    Generator use and battery charging by engine idling is prohibited in generator free areas. Generator use is prohibited in loops A, B, and C from May 15 through October 31.
    Tents must be pitched on the tent pads where provided.
    Bicycles are allowed and bicycle riders must comply with all traffic regulations including helmet laws and are restricted to public roads, parking areas and designated routes. The use of in-line skates, skateboards or scooters is prohibited.

    ❤️ ❤️❤️ Smokemont! I’ve got you beat on first camping trips there. My first time was at only 6 weeks old in August of 1969! 😊
    My paternal grandfather started the tradition when my mother was a teen & then the grandparents took us yearly while we were growing up. Sometimes my parents went too but not every year. We didn’t miss a single year until after 1987. I graduated high school that year & my grandfather passed away right afterwards. Since then we’ve gone up off & on over the years-mainly after Labor Day. My last trip there was 2010 but I did get to ride thru there in 2018. I sure do ❤️ camping at Smokemont! 😊

      A little late to reply but I just saw your comment. That is really cool, we always camped the week before the 4th of July, good chance we crossed paths if you were there during that week, in late 70s through the mid 90s. We camped in the D section. Thanks for sharing

    Thanks alot for sharing this Jeff, We have rode by this more times than I can count on our way up to Gatlinburg and I never knew it was there. Glad we live close we will be trying this campground out this year. Thank you for taking the time to make all these excellent videos I really enjoy watching.

    great campground tour, thank you very much! We've been to and driven through most of the other GSMNP campgrounds, but not this one. We are considering it in the near future, and it was great to watch your video, keeping the map open and what sites are available for our time frame, and count em down as you drove by! thank you for taking the time to do such a good video tour!

    I also love this campground! It was my first campground stay in the Smokies as I prepared for my first solo backpacking trip which also began from Smokemont heading to Camp 50! Gr8 review & tbh I had no idea it was that big! Lol...I enjoyed you tips about the shade & the story below about the guy who learned how to tie his shoe there! This place will always hold a place in my soul!

    That was a nice little drive thru tour. That is a HUGE campground. Looks like a good place to do a little tubing also. What I found very interesting is all of the GIGANTIC tarps people had hung at their campsites. I didn't even know you could buy tarps as large as some I saw.

    THE first campsite as you enter is where I camped in 1961. I learned to tie my shoes there on that trip. We saw a bear on the hill directly across it. The next time I stayed at that exact campsite was in 1974 on Easter break fron High School.

      Samuel Morgan thank you so much for sharing that, I have so many memories of Smokemont and friends that I made along the way there. Was it a coincidence that you stayed on the same sight that many years apart or was that planned?

    Been a while sine you posted this but still very useful. Just started to plan a trip to Smokemont and your drive through helped a lot. I'll be taking my 29' 5er and it was good to see that there are many sites to choose from.

    Thanks for doing this video. Elkmont is my favorite, but I don't like what Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg turned into. My next trip will be on this side of the park to watch the elk.

    Thanks for making this video-what a great idea! We're visiting from Colorado later this month with our camper, and staying at Smokemont for 4 nights. Of course I didn't see this before making my reservations several months ago, so we're in loop F, but hopefully it'll be one of the shady spots I saw. It was great to see people with tubes, we'll throw ours in to have for that part of the trip, and wouldn't have known to do so otherwise. The stables could be a good thing to take advantage of too, thanks for sharing your special part of the park!!

    • @TheFurrminator
      @TheFurrminator  6 років тому

      Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video and found it helpful. I think you'll like Smokemont no matter what area you camp in. Tubing is always fun, we start at the upper end of the campground near the D section and ride all the way to the bridge where you turn in off of 441, it's a long walk back though. They say the water never gets above 45 degrees but it doesn't take long to get used to it. The deepest part is right under that bridge if you just want to drive down to that part and go swimming. If you want to check out a beautiful waterfall without a long hike, check out Mingo Falls, you have to walk up about 160 steps to get to it but it's well worth it, here's a link about that, it's just a few miles from Smokemont.

      I could go on and on, I love the Smokies, we are going back October and I can't wait. I hope y'all have a wonderful and safe trip.

    We are on the Flagstaff/Rockwood page on FB as well and that's how I found the channel. Our new Flagstaff TT should be ready at the end of the month so we're scouting campgrounds while they're still fairly empty. We went to Smokemont today, but from the Gatlinburg end. We are debating whether or not we can tow over the mountains via 441 or if we'd have to go around via I40 (about 60 miles longer!).

    • @TheFurrminator
      @TheFurrminator  5 років тому +1

      Hey, glad you found my channel. I love camping at Smokemont, it's a little more work than camping with full hookups but something very enjoyable about Smokemont. Personally, I would go around via 40, I've often thought about taking my camper via 441 but just seems it would cause a lot of unnecessary stress on the tow vehicle. That being said, I have seen a lot of travel trailers going up 441 in both directions over the years.

    Planning our trip in September. We are supposed to camp in Cataloochee Valley (have reservations) but I’m not sure the road will be back open by then. This is where we will stay instead if Cataloochee cancels. I really want to see and hear elk!

      There are sinks outside the restrooms where you can wash dishes, you can get water from the faucet at those sinks and fill the water tank on your rv
