I started my US Army carrier with Generators and the Jeep M151 A1 and the M151 A2, know every nut and bolt on these things, could do a complete service and everything in a day, fixed in the field and thought if done right can get you anywhere, don't forget the M35 A2 Also. Twist Your Nuts was our call sign, for what its worth.....

When I joined the Army in 1971, this vehicle (M151 Series) was the very first tactical vehicle as a Truck Driver that I learned to drive on. They were a lot of fun to drive, but because of the independent suspension you had to really watch your speed with them. Because the rear wheels if you were going too fast and made a sudden sharp turn the vehicle had a tendency to roll over. They have great ground clearance for offroad use. The front and rear differentials are recested pretty high into the body of the vehicle. They have a 24 volt electrical system so you would have to have a like vehicle to slave this vehicle off if the batteries are dead. If I had a dollar for every mile I drove one of these during my 20 years in the Army I could buy one brand new.
One other note regarding the fuel tank, when you opened it up, it is missing the fuel strainer. The reason the tank opening is so large is because the fuel tankers have very large hoses and nozzles. Some of the larger tactical vehicles that run on "MOGAS" ie. (M88 Tank Recovery Vehicle) have fuel tanks that hold hundreds of gallons and would take a very long time to fill up with a standard nozzle like we see at the local gas station.

Let me tell you from experience, convoying through Iraq in blackout drive sucked! I retired from the Army in 2021 with just over 20 years in. Watching this reminds me so much because they don’t change much when it comes to the instruments in the army vehicles lol

I drove one of those all over Vietnam. They were great little trucks; you did have to watch cornering on pavement, though - they had a nasty habit of getting upside down. That IRS in the rear was pretty much like a Corvair or a VW - it would jack it up and tip you over. The tip was never , EVER chop 'rthe throttle once you were committed to the corner. Mine had a piece of angle on the front bumper about 4 fit high to catch the cut your head off wires the bad guys liked to string across the road. Also, I can tell you that the Army tires were only good for one thing - you can't tell from the tracks if you were coming or going - otherwise they are absolute crap. FYI - if you mount a .50 cal in the rear area of the truck, it WILL rip the floor right up - ask me how I know. But the firepower was awesome.

The blackout headlight on the front is infrared and shows up really well on night vision. We installed extra blackout headlights on humvees in Iraq so they could run at night on night vision with no lights.

There's a certain feeling a feller gets while watching multiple "Fire in da hole" attempts. After 14 plug checks, battery charges, and cranking it puts a feller on the edge of his seat hoping that it's going to bust-off. And then it happens ! AUGH - YA ! When I heard you "Woo-who-whoo'en" it was nothing but smiles over here. Was a great moment. 😄
MLS was mild this week, only one minor repeat being the return spring bracket. 👍 The ride at the end was the victory lap and reward 🏁🏁🏁That was a lot of fun, thank-you very much.
I believe the large fuel filler and fuel cap are meant for rapid filling.

Growing up My friends had an old 24 volt year Kaiser 53 and we had more fun in that old Jeep. Almost every day we would put in $2 worth of gas and head to the woods, get stuck, get muddy and laugh and joke. We kept out of trouble by being out enjoying life. Once we slipped off a log bridge across a backwater slough. Had to walk out several miles to a main road in the dark scared as all get out. When we got there my friends Daddy, my scoutmaster, was sitting there waiting for us about 10pm at night. Oh yeah I forgot the jeep was under water but had the sealed system. He made us go back and and we hand winched the jeep out with an old manual wench mounted to the front. After we got it out it we got it started back up and drove it home. Many great memories of these were brought back when you road through woods. Now everything around my home town is National Wildlife preserve and we can't even take a four wheeler where we used to have the best times of our lives. When I moved home after 35 years I was heart broken when I could not travel where we used to go. I asked several people about it and they had the same feelings. Thanks for the memories.

Love your channel Chad. Marine Corps still had these at work in the late 90s. They called them IFAVs (Infantry Fast Attack Vehicle) Like that one, they would have a lot of add ons and mods depending on the mission the unit expected of them. They were also the only vehicle at the time that would fit in the back of a CH46 transport helo intact and could just drive out. The black lensed light that's caged in on the fender is a "infra-red" light. It's light cannot be seen with the naked eye. The add-on switch you see on the dash marked "IR" should control it. Service members would wear night vision googles to be able to drive with no visible lights on. This allows a convoy or patrol to roll all the way up to highway speed completely darked out. It's add-on ness shows that the technology came about after this jeep was built so a unit just modded it on.

Man, that looks like a fun machine. Great video! FYI, that looked like an airplane sparking plug. Also, I wonder if that clatter had anything to do with the fording valve. I noticed that when it started clattering, the smoke also started rolling off the motor. Maybe it was pumping up the crank case, causing the clatter, and blowing out oil? When it stopped doing it, the filler cap was loose. Just a guess. Keep em coming!

Had a Fake M-60 machine gun on a mount on the back with 6 grenade launchers standing up in the back with the field radio/ tall black antenna mounted on the drivers side. Just a beautiful rig. Beware when buying these. Make sure you look underneath them to see if they have been welded together in the middle. Stay away from those types. They have been chopped in half.

Pretty cool find! I was in the Army in the late 80s up until the early 2000s. I remember those mess kits like the one you found in the trunk. Usually, they are old and have been in service for decades. I had a couple that were date stamped from the 1940s. Some soldier or Marine in Europe or the Pacific during wWW2, the same with Korea and Vietnam, may have used the same ones I was eating from in the field back then. You should be able to find somebody selling the "TM" (technical manual) or service manual for civilians, online easily. If you want to take that Jeep in deeper water, you can also probably find someone selling a deep-water fording kit for it.

you have a foot locker without the tray and part of a mess kit.. the frying pan as you called it is the main plate or dinner plate. It holds meat and potatoes and gravy, the divided plate is for the knife, fork. and spoon after cleaning and the kit folds together and locks then is stored in your backpack. When getting food that plates holds veggies and bread, silverware goes in your pocket while loading food.

All that is missing from that kit is a intrenching shovel that also is a leathal weapon. They do things differently now I've been told.... Just Babbling....

I’ve had a 1966 A1 for about 20 years now. A couple of interesting things about the M151 - look underneath, it’s independent suspension on all corners and the diffs are bolted up to the body resulting in loads of ground clearance over the Willys and M38. Also, the radiator is bolted to the engine, not the frame, so the entire “power pack” (engine, transmission, transfer case and radiator) come out as a unit. So motor pools could have power packs waiting and swap out a bad one in no time. Warning - the weakness of these Hercules engines is the little ears on the head that hold the exhaust manifold on. They are bad to break off if overtightened. They actually made more M151’s than any other kind of military 1/4 ton vehicle so parts are surprisingly easy to find. Most that actually served in wartime were left in Southeast Asia. The best thing about owning one is to go to old car shows and let Vietnam vets sit in it and listen to their stories.

NSN = National Stock Number, it's used to order it in the defense department logistics system, account for it, order parts, etc. All equipment in the military has one. Not a footlocker, probably was used for a specific piece of equipment. I loved the M151s wish I could have got, one, dang DOT didn't want the roads flooded with them when the military switched to the HMMWV , said they were too unsafe for the highways so they weren't auctioned off

NSN is National Stock Number. That number is used to order one through the Supply System. There is also a listing for every part on that jeep with an associated NSN - to order parts that need to be replaced. Right down to switches and screws - you can even order a complete motor assembly, or a transmission. Interestingly, the first four numbers of that NSN are called the FSCM - which relates to the Federal Stock Code Manufacturer - or, the folks that built it and subsequently supply the repair parts.

At first it looked like it was not going to run , but with a little patience it got the message and started to act accordingly , It now looks like a typical military vehicle , a little abused but ready for action . Till next time , Stay well and God Bless you and yours . Stuart in Ontario ..........................

The black out lights are also used while driving with night vision goggles on. And also the lock on the headlamp switch keeps also from blinding you while using night vision goggles. I was motor-t in the marine corps and we used the black out lights. But we called them “cat eyes”

I found that when trying to start a long parked engine , that I had best luck by leaving the plugs out of the weakest cylinders. The increased rpm helps.

I think those were really low compression so that they would run off about anything. That oil cap with the chain is jumping around luke crazy

My dad used to daily a mutt in the old country. They where provided as war surplus and got used as dailies. Could never find one here for a good price.

So i actually looked into it. M151s where actually specifically produced for Pakistan until the line shutdown, a production run of a 1000 specifically produced vehicles (plus surplus given by the US) and then until 1990 AMG (AM General) where assembling new m151s from leftover parts with no official production line for contract with Pakistan Sudan and Israel an unknown number where made because it was somewhat adhoc since the US relationships weren't very good with any of these countries. AMG used to exist until 2020, now it's just a subsidiary of KPS who's a investment firm who also owns briggs and straton btw.
Lotta history these trucks went through, same with it's Korean war predecessor and ofc the willys.

My great uncle had one of these with the hardtop, thing would go about anywhere just didnt get there fast. I loved the thing, sadly his son took it out one winter when my uncle was at his end of life stage and ended up rolling it and totaled it, never seen another around after that.
