    All you need to do to stop the acrylics from breakage is to use the smallest drill bit you have and step it up a few times till you get to the size you want to end up with. Also a bar of soap on the bit can help a lot.

    On soft material like Fiberglass,Plexiglass,Acrylic,etc. I always use brad point bits.They were designed for woodworking but work great on the others too.The Harbor Freight ones work the best (there's some other brands too) because they're shaped (for a lack of a better word in my knowledge base...lol) "skirt" to cut/score the outside diameter 1st before the bit itself starts to remove the material from center.This gives you a lot less to zero chipout.
    They can't be as easily sharpened as a regular brad point like some other brands because of that outside "skirt".
    Epoxy does bond well to wood as it is...but there is another way to make the slot for the acrylic.Use a dovetail router bit.With the V taper the dovetail bit makes that epoxy and acrylic with a couple holes and it will never work lose and fall out.

      Better yet, you can make your own! Drilling into acrylic is best with a dull pointed bit. Not quite flat, but close. I save all my worn out bits for drilling into plexi/acrylic - they work awesome! 😎

  • @jasnonya3005
    @jasnonya3005 2 роки тому

    A brad point bit might be better as it cuts differently once the brad point is fully in, more flat against the surface and less wedging which along with the heat from friction causes the acrylic to crack or break.

  • @MrIrishalley
    @MrIrishalley 2 роки тому +1

    something i would do when drilling on plastics is drill in reverse. this way it more melts the hole than cuts it and it wont break because the bit wont grab. im not sure how effective it will be for this but it might be something you might want to try

  • @1stsumo

    Hey Keiff, Fricken Awesome man. Great job like always. FYI: Here is an idea. I don't know about plastics but I used to drill holes in glass. I would use putty, roll it out like a rope, make a little donut around the spot to be drilled, put turpentine into the middle of the donut. This will keep the area cool and lubed so you can drill it. You might also use a glass drill bit. Can't wait for your next video. Keep up the good work. Thanks...

    • @FishinNStuff

    I'm not an expert with that stuff but if I run my drill in reverse it melts a good hole without breaking it. I know pool noodles aren't as durable but that's what I used on mine. They are held in place by two zip ties and will be easy to change if the time comes. I've gotten two years out of em so far and they still look good. I don't leave them or my boat outside in the sun, I think that makes a difference.

    On the back hole where you said you attached two swivels together or you could use a paperclip. Was wondering if you should reinforce the hole since is so close to the corner it might easily snap off. Maybe some kind of rubber grommet. I love the look of these but I am too chicken to use plexiglass and would probably use galvanized steel or aluminum. Not as likely to damage if you dropped one. Love the videos. Keep them coming.

    • @FishinNStuff

    Hey Keiff used to work a lot with acrylic making aquariums etc. If you use regular drill bits then drill holes in reverse mode at half the speed. The acrylic will not stick to the drill bit and will not crack. When drilling at the edges if the acrylic is pretty thin put a small acrylic piece overlapping where you will be drilling. You can glue the acrylic using acetone ie nail polish remover. Love your channel.
