  • ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
"Nature of Language is a written painting for and about the nature of language, an abstract landscape of words, phrases, names, and poetic thoughts inspired drifting through Raleigh while on walks and visiting unexpected places through a playful survey that eyed various historical resources on a psycho-geographical exploration of the city on two occasions. The painting is a reflection of my awareness while visiting; a diary, and of these experiential observations that form the syntax of its visual vocabulary.
"Although illegible at first sight, the juxtaposed characters, gestures, hieroglyphs, and words become readable through feeling, as it is my hope that the work evokes the language of your own inner voice - of your own history. In an era where technology is taking over as the driving force of communication, art reminds us of our roots and our need for face-to-face communication. This Nature is our mirror, as art allows this bridge to be possible through the language of calligraphy, I pay homage to this Nature; to our selves, and the history of languages, which are the mirrors of our present condition.
"I found inspiration in the essence of words and their combined power however abstract within a landscape of gestural forms and characters that serve as carriers of meaning. Within this meta-landscape a viewer is welcomed to read into or feel the Nature of this universal language putting grammatical forms on hold."

It's so attention-grabbing, and unique. Normally, I don't like calligraphy painting, but this one is a beautiful piece!

Wow, I love this artwork. I love how this particular artwork incorporates words, language, communication, & how all of that connects many people in this world. I like the fluidity, expansiveness, & growth of this artwork. Thanks for sharing. I've never visited Raleigh, North Carolina. "Nature of Language" is a nice written painting.

Ge 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. Ge 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

I used to do some thing similar to this back in high school- just scribble what ever that comes to mind into the paper and somehow people like them. I understand how people like seeing beautiful patterns etc. When I asked how I came up with it I said 'I just squibble random stuff down' I could had made some shit up like this guy to make the art seems more meaningful, but the fact was I just squibble shit down randomly.

I second that. Abstract art tries to reach a mass audience but maybe only the schizophrenic interpret it successfully.

I liked it work in some of the other photos, as they were more legible and colorful. This one was so busy (scribbles), and plain (red white).

It's great to see my technique "Lines of Language" advanced by artist Parla. See Stephen Kline - Wikipedia. "Art drawn from words
Two years after relocating to Ellenton, FL in 1991, Kline painted his first Lines of Language painting, signing his name over and over. Titled 3795 Signatures, the abstract was chosen for the 1994 Florida National,[ Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, Florida."

Good art, I agree with that- but I am struggling to see how he claims the squiggles are different languages? they are just squiggles, there is no connection to the languages what so ever. Unless 'the art' is 'the language'.
