As China envoy disputes ex-Soviet states’ sovereignty, revisiting Beijing’s ‘wolf-warrior’ diplomacy

  • China’s envoy to France Lu Shaye has stoked a row by questioning the sovereignty of former Soviet states, including Ukraine. China, a Russia ally that fancies itself as a potential mediator between Kyiv & Moscow, has distanced itself from the comment. But the remark plays into the aggressive ‘wolf-warrior’ diplomacy Beijing has championed in the wake of Covid. As Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explained in episdoe 485 of #CutTheClutter, originally published on 1 June 2020.

I'm not sure if I was able to correlate the video with the video description. The reason for wolf-warrior diplomacy is evident from the Covid period.. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to justify the ex-Soviet states' sovereignty comment. Is China still feeling cornered by all the cages it has rattled in its neighborhood? Or is it that, it is still continuing to maintain an aggressive streak post Covid? Also, the last part with COVID details could've been trimmed.

An excellent episode again! China is likely to adopt a strategy of "death by thousand cuts" for India. Pak had some success in this direction - China will attempt the same in the coveted space of North-east and Ladakh. They already know India's incoherence arising from communal tensions. Earlier they had supported the Naxalite guerilla warfare, it may be changed into Hindu-Buddhist-Sikh partitioning. It will be played over a long period of time unless they carry out a full-on assault. Taiwan is more important for them.

Wolf-warrior diplomacy - basically this is a take no shit attitude that both US and EU had been using since end of Cold War which many had been accustomed to, ie. Boris Johnson, Trump, Margaret Thatcher, all these years but unaccustomed to when China begin to act like them in certain hot issues unlike how they reacted in previous many years of defensive reactions.
However what Chinese envoy of France said in a private interview is not wolf-warrior diplomacy but an personal academic argument which is somewhat correct but politically incorrect considering the European atmosphere and current Chinese strategy for Europe.
