OLYMPICS: Scoring Jade Carey's fantastic floor exercise @ Tokyo 2021 (Podium Training/D and E Score)

- The Olympics are here! The US women recently finished their podium training, and one highlight was Jade Carey's upgraded floor exercise. This could receive a 6.7 difficulty score (D score) if the Gogean is credited, and even if it isn't, a 6.6 score is still massive and extremely competitive. I was especially impressed by her front layout connected to Silivas (0.2 combination value) -- super difficult and well executed. She's putting her best foot forward for qualifications, and I would love to see her in the event finals! See how I scored her difficulty score (D score) and execution score (E score) from her podium training exercise in Tokyo.
Given that the competition for finals will be fierce, it'll be interesting to see if Jade chooses to compete the triple twisting double layout (triple-double laid out - K ranking, more difficult than Simone's Biles II!), or if she just submitted it as an option but doesn't intend to do it. In qualifications, if we assume that Simone Biles will take the first floor spot, Jade will need to outcompete every other American (notably Jordan Chiles and MyKayla Skinner, but every athlete is in the running) to earn the second spot and not lose the finals spot from the two-per-country rule that we see in gymnastics.
Who do you want to see in the event finals for the Americans? I'd love to see the finals spread out across multiple athletes: Suni Lee potentially finaling in bars and beam, Jordan Chiles competing on beam or floor, Jade and MyKayla Skinner in the running for floor and vault, and Grace McCallum as a steady all-arounder that could probably find a place in any final besides vault on a very good day. It seems like Simone, the GOAT, will be in contention for every final; I'm excited to see her Yurchenko Double Pike!
Notes:
- The Chusovitina may have incurred more deductions than other elements simply because of the unfortunate camera angle. Judging on video is a bit difficult to do, so I judged as accurately as I could. Additionally, there's no standard score to use as reference, so I'm just doing the best I can :)
- Leap series deductions: precision on the Full L Hop, body shape on the Switch Split 1/1 (think hips not square, etc.)
- I didn't consider audience engagement (artistic deduction) because there was no audience. It'll be interesting to see how the judges deal with that in competition.
- Jade does have complex choreography and moves touching the floor. She is deducted for expressiveness and failure to express a role, theme, or emotion, but she otherwise seemed fine with artistry deductions? Let me know if you think differently. Maybe corner choreography should've been deducted as well.
Score calculated: 14.300 = 6.6 + 7.7 (0.2 artistry deductions)

It’s technically not the Carey yet but if she makes finals I think she’ll do it there. It’s really clean too so if she does it well it’ll have little deduction as well
I see Jade in the finals! I think the music choice and choreography, although not stunning and could get deductions, is the best she has ever shown so I'm happy for her, you can see she's been working really hard and she is on!!
I agree. I like this routine a lot. Personally, even though it incurs deductions, I don't really have a problem with her artistry? I think I'm in the minority here 😅

Aristry deductions are shit artifacts imo. Men’s artistic gymnastics has never been about the artistry and isn’t now. Why should the women’s side be stuck in the past and looked at as a different sport, yknow? I loathe all the boomers who want to go back to the 50’s where “they just CARED about the artistry!!”
@@GymAnalysis this is not true. that deduction is for overall engagement level of the routine. for example, eye contact with the judges/'crowd'

I didn’t know lack expressiveness and artistry could result in an actual deduction! I just thought the judges would be bored lol
nope there are more actually. Lack of complex choreo, not going close to the floor, not including the audience (I think), words during music, inappropriate gestures

Yes, there are a few artistic deductions! Other ones that she might incur include failure to engage the audience (unfortunately there isn't one in Tokyo), non-unique corner choreography (if she does the same thing at multiple corners), and movements not matching the music.
I believe that mexqable is right about inappropriate gestures; I take it for any movement that is artistically "wrong" or out of place with the music.
I didn't consider failure to engage the audience because there wasn't an audience? I'm not sure how the judges are going to do that. But I do think that that could be another tenth off. She might also take a tenth for corner choreography.

It is! The goal is to make sure gymnasts keep their floor exercise interesting and reward those who put in the effort to entertain an audience. I think that they did take it off in the final though for Jade, considering that there were a sizable amount of people in the arena.
What are your thoughts on Jade getting into the FX finals over Lee? I'm still uncertain what Lee's podium training FX would have scored, but she had some issues with it (double L turn, going OOB, etc). I do hope Jade gets a finals FX spot.
Suni also looked quite strong! Her double L turn was definitely an issue during podium training. I think floor finals will be the most competitive finals for the Americans to get into because all 6 of them could potentially challenge for a spot. If Jade performs like this, I think she'll most likely get the spot.

Beautiful floor exercise that is why Jade is an Olympic Gold Medalist. This is the most difficult routine performed in the Olympics. The deductions are too much, it needs a higher score.
I dont know if anyone else noticed or maybe its just me, but i find it odd that the AA final and team final seems to have a little bit lowered scores as compare to the apparatus event finals even if the routines were the same. Any explanation to this?

for some reason Iike the choreography and think it’s calm but I do understand the artistry deductions. i think she has a really good chance of silver, but she needs to clean up especially that third tumbling pass
Haha me too with regards to the choreography. I'm not sure if her third pass was actually less clean or if it's just that the camera angle made it much easier to see deductions.

I can't upload Olympic routines, even if the videos are fair use, because the IOC will block them either way :/ regarding her scores, I believe she was deducted heavily on dance elements.

I believe she got hit hard on the dance elements! She took out her double L turn in the EF because it kept getting downgraded. Additionally, the B+H indirect connection is actually only worth 0.1 - that was my mistake 😅.

She got 6.2 and 6.3D in QF and AA respectively. Which element was downgraded?
I wasn't able to watch her QF routine, so I'm not sure what happened there. I believe that her AA and EF routines both counted a B skill in place of the double L turn - a single L turn in AA (?) and the front layout in EF. That's why she took it out, avoiding E deductions when it doesn't benefit her D score.
The B+H connection is actually +0.1, not +0.2
@@joelrivera8098 No, the video showed a 6.6D FX with the +0.2 connection bonus. After correcting that error, the video suggested a 6.5D FX. Likely it is due to the double L turn being downgraded. She actually didn't perform the double L turn in her 6.3D gold medal winning floor routine.

My guess for her D score in the floor final was.. I, H, H, E, B / D, C, C = 4.2 + 2.0 + 0.1 = 6.3. Tried the gogean again but was short so downgraded + took out her double L turn.
Taking out the 2L turn ended up being the right decision, though! She saved deductions and counted the layout instead. I saw her Gogean as underrotated as well.
Front layout step out + Silivas is 0.1 cv, not 0.2
Anything you connect with a E skill or higher grants +2 bonus. That’s why a lot of people do whip to triple full etc

@@sean-xc3ht All direct connections with E skills or higher get 0.2 yes. But for indirect connections like we have here, the rules are more complicated. There are several cases: A + A indirectly connected to D gets 0.1, A + A indirectly connected to E (or higher) gets 0.2, B/C + D gets 0.1, and otherwise C + E (or higher) gets 0.2. The B + H indirect connection only gets 0.1 (if it were C it would fall into the C + E (or higher) category, but we only have a B).

So how did this get down to 6.200 in quals?
I don't have the video, but I imagine it was a couple of things:
1. B+H indirect is only worth 0.1 bonus (my mistake!), bringing her down a tenth
2. Her dance elements could've been evaluated much more harshly; it's likely some of them received downgrades

Good question! I know her choreography isn't super fluid, but I felt like the routine was quite fluid? She doesn't spend a lot of time waiting in corners or preparing for elements. This is the nature of her choreography being on the more basic side, though, so I imagine a deduction could be taken.

Judging on video is always harsher than in real time, so it's definitely possible that some of these wouldn't be taken in real life. I thought that the Double L was a bit overrotated and the L hop 1/1 was a bit underrotated, personally?

@@GymAnalysis I thought that precision on the leap series was fair, and that Jade did that leap better than she has in the past when she has got a 0.3 deduction because of her body position relative to her take-off when she hits the split. I find those super-difficult to judge, and the idea that people can do it in real-time, live, or even at normal speed watching a video, I just find amazing. I always have to slow it down to 0.25 speed! It emphasises why dance moves shouldn't be disregarded as irrelevant, with the total focus on tumbling. In fact, they're very difficult to do, at the speed they have to do them, and in conjunction with other difficult elements.
I also want to say that I do love these videos. Seeing how the deductions mount up, and how for the most part they're probably unavoidable, emphasises why there is a competitive strategy to follow in choosing (a) which elements; (b) where you fall on higher D v higher E; (c) what should be deducted as D v E; and (d) what's regarded as an achievable E range for any gymnast, bearing in mind that you have to do 8 elements, and may choose to do more to build up a connection bonus. All of this is why, despite the many and entrenched problems with gymnastics culture, for my money artistic gymnastics remains the most fascinating sport to follow.

Why is her E-score super low?
Her score is in a pretty typical range! She mainly loses tenths on dance elements and artistry (the judges in Tokyo were quite stringent about artistry rules), but her tumbling is really strong.
Is this the performance where she was "robbed"?
No, this is podium training :) athletes do not receive official scores and the performances do not impact competition results. I'm not allowed to upload the main competition haha
No way she only gets 0.2 artistry deduction. It's gotta be at least 0.5 given how artistry is rewarded these days. Her L hop should get deducted for form (failure to maintain L position) and precision as well.
TBF I don’t think she even bothered trying to pretend she was going for a Gogean. Looked pretty Johnson to me.
USA is going to lose the team gold because of Grace. The coaches are going to trust her with 4 event competition in the team competition over the number two and three (Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles) on the team; who each are only participating in two events! WTF you go with your top 3 not your bench player in the finals!
Well all of them competed all except one (I can't remember who) did vault. Even if they didn't trust her she would of done them since Simone quit

Her tumbling is incredible. But her choreography and artistry is not. I can’t consider her dancing it’s not fluent at all. She looks like she’s posing intermittently in between her tumbles.

Code is clear, Interpretation of the role is required, otherwise there are penalties.
The music isnt only a base, u have to play a role in the choreography in gymnastics if u didnt know
The deduction is a bit complex, but the athlete is supposed to communicate some idea, character, or emotion with their performance. It could be expressive, sad choreography, or upbeat, excited, involved choreography, or even a musical theater-esque performance. I think that every athlete in the floor final avoided this deduction except Jade, if that helps.
Great tumbling but absolutely no dance . Moving arms to different positions isn't dance . The tumbling should be rewarded but the lack of artistry should be enough to keep her out of finals .
So robotik, no Artistik, no dance, she is affraid and to Focus and forgett to enjoy and dance
У Carey нет хореографии вообще, под эту музыку нужны элегантные движения, а она как бревно прыгала. Вольные упражнения ужасные!!!! В Америке не умеют ставить вольные упражнения.
