You made my wife give me a proper stare! I was on the fence of upgrading my Ableton Intro to Standard for mastering parts of my music collection, and this video did it for me. Now I have to explain to her why dropping some cash was well worth it ;-)
I've been watching instructional vids for over a year and this was the equal best ever, simplified tutorial ever. Nice bit of lesson planning and very well presented. Thanks. you actually helped not only me but I'm sure many more.
Great explanation of how to actually use each effect and what each part does! I have watched about ten tutorials and i still had no idea what anything was actually doing. This helped out so much!
This is now my go-to guide for mastering - thanks. I was wondering if you need to add a glue compressor to the end though, just to tighten up the overall sound?
gotta say this is a well done mastering chain the only problem is tho if your not carefull you can cut off some of your bass especially if its its in the low end
I was looking for videos on mastering in ableton and couldn’t find many valid ones. This is the first one I am liking a lot (even though it still sounds complicated to me)
Is there any way I can still get a clean master with Ableton live 9 I don't have all the extra audio effects and instruments like you do I only have what Ableton give you when you first get it let me know man im a totally independent artist and I do all audio engineering myself.
very insightful. usually, I'll get frustrated with vids like this because it's a lot of BS semantics, this vid was spot on. may I add 1 suggestion, when using your busy spot in your track for continued reference of sound, your control group, per say, use the loop function for precise reference. there was a moment in the video when the reference section veered off into another section, slightly off putting. however, fantastic video mate! cheers.
Great video! Thank you dude. I'm still confused why you chose to do the vu meter gain instead of using the limiter gain? I just need to know why for my own purposes. Doesn't it accomplish the same task? Are you just doing so to be in VU units for your own reference?
Ableton is brilliant the way it handles racks, I wish Logic had a similar function, I have to use a 3rd party plugin to get mono compatible widening. The struggle is real ;)
easily the most helpful mastering tutorial I have watched, I have been studying this topic for three years and found some new tricks in this video I have never seen before. The stereo widening trick is amazing! One question though, what is the point of adding the limiter at the end of the chain if you're already reducing the output volume in the VU meter?
Because that way it is even more precise to see and balance the Limiters peaks when the volume is about to hit the ceiling even by a tiny amount. That also helps with the overall balancing and helps to avoid distortions. I think that is the reason but not sure tho.
So like you're doing this to a completed audio track -- does that imply that its unnecessary to add effects to individual tracks of midi or samples? Perhaps I've been approaching mastering all wrong.
Hello there, i saw this on KVR, and this has been my first attempt at learning what exactly mastering is,and i think you did a great job explaining. But I do have a question for you. You seemed to randomly pick a spot in your song at the beginning and continued to use just this one spot for this whole video. Is there any rhyme or reason to it that i didnt pick up?
It was a busy section in the song that had the most instruments going. When stuff is quiet it's ok for it to be quiet, but when it's loud it needs to be controlled. You would definitely make sure the whole song fits well together, but honestly that's a mixing issue. Dynamics (Quiet/Loud) are important to the feeling of a song, so be gentle with your compression, let your track breath. Control the heavy stuff. Hope that helps :)
I f*cking hate mastering- I’m just lucky to have a mate who’s really good at any mastering and mixing anything I throw at him. Just my opinion but mastering is a whole skill all on its own - and it’s hard to find someone who is good at writing, composing, mixing AND mastering... maybe I just need better software for this purpose, dunno ?!?
who has been blind their whole life and can finally see. I can't express my gratitude in words but tNice tutorials is the best I can do. THANK YOU SO
I can't thank you enough... hands down the best video for beginnners

@Harlem Julian you are welcome =)
Thorough....dug the use of utility and the calibrating of the VU meter.
An excellent tutorial. I'm sad to see you don't make them anymore, because they are great. Thanks for the help.

When the limiter kicked in , all I could say was “Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! “ (repeatedly).
Great information here!!! Thank you!

Thanks man, this was my first attempt! Good video for someone thats not ever tried to master, pretty easy to follow and understand.
Great Video. Watched and re watched and learned so much. I've been using ableton for years.

Great stuff mate! Not too easy..not too hard. Thanks for the knowledge!!
It's a lot easier than I expected honestly.
Your music sounds good
thanks, it actually let me through so i could download it.
How would you go about getting the kick drum to be more pronounced? Cheers
is there any template already done to download? thank you ;)
Awesome vid. You should make this rack and share it for us noobs.
Amazing educational video, thank you
What is he actually calibrating on the vu meter? What is the -10dB?
So informative, thanks a lot!
Thank you, it works perfect!
Great video! Thank you dude. I'm still confused why you chose to do the vu meter gain instead of using the limiter gain? I just need to know why for my own purposes. Doesn't it accomplish the same task? Are you just doing so to be in VU units for your own reference?
Thank you! It helped a lot.
great tutorial! thank u!! any ableton built-in alternatives for the VUMTDUO?
You had me at "normal" people..
That width technique is genius. Using that 'Utility' tool can reduce mono compatibility issues.
Ableton is brilliant the way it handles racks, I wish Logic had a similar function, I have to use a 3rd party plugin to get mono compatible widening. The struggle is real ;)

thank you so much dude you're a god
Thanks for this vid !
TL;DR 36:20
Couldn't you just put the saturator before the first chain of EQ/MultibandCompressors?
good question!
So like you're doing this to a completed audio track -- does that imply that its unnecessary to add effects to individual tracks of midi or samples? Perhaps I've been approaching mastering all wrong.
Adding compressors or EQ to individual channels is usually done in the mixing phase I think
EXCELLENT!!THANKXX!!
@33:33 were loud.. that was dope, thanks for the simplified version!
Thank you for demystifying Mastering for me
