- New information about Gladiator 2 has recently been released, and it makes one of the biggest theories about the original movie even more likely to be confirmed. Paul Mescal is set to play Lucius in Gladiator 2, and the new information about his character brought some old theories back to the spotlight. Lucius was a child, played by Spencer Treat Clark, in the original Gladiator, though his actor won't return for Gladiator 2. The part was instead given to Mescal, who will be playing a much older version of Lucius years after Maximus killed Emperor Commodus at the end of Gladiator.
Though Lucius has a new actor, Mescal's take on the character will certainly connect to Clark's. The sequel isn't set for release until November, but the Gladiator 2 story details that are currently available make it clear that Lucius's story was directly influenced by the original Gladiator. The new images of Gladiator 2 held some big reveals about the movie, and specifically Lucius. They don't paint a full picture yet, but those details suggest Gladiator 2 could confirm one of the biggest theories about the original movie. If that theory proves true, it would completely redefine both Gladiator and Lucius' entire character.

We saw the battle rhinoceros before in the hit Spartan movie, "The 300", back in 2014. In that one, a brave young Spartan warrior with nerves of steel waits till almost the last moment when he can't miss, and hurls a javelin into the head of the rhino, stopping it immediately. This latest war rhino has a warrior perched on top of it, making it harder to stop.

The monologue about freedom and tyranny is what kills it for me. I'm still wanting to hold out hope, but the first one had a very simple hook.

That is capitvating. That is epic. This mewling ... just. The first one worked because it rarely pontificated. Oh there were speeches but it didn't DEMAND. It simply did by showing Maximus interacting with his fellows and they with him. Showing what can be done when one sets everything aside to work together. Hagen and Juba were his closest confidants and one was a deserter turned pit fighter and the other someone sold into slavery far from home. Yet Maximus valued them both.
I want there to be more here than some pontificating self congradulatory Message movie. Put a message in there yes, because these things *do* need to be said, but shouting about classism isn't going to work nearly so well as showing senators undeserved fat and full while showing the common folk fighting over bred being handed out at the games for the sake of keeping them from rioting.
Show Lucius realizing he has to fight for the Rome Maximus died trying to save. Not the Rome that is but the Rome that could be.

Now, there was an online report LAST NOVEMBER, that Denzel was going to team up with director Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day," "The Equalizer 3") for an as-yet untitled take on Hannibal's story for Netflix...so, maybe that's what YOU'RE Thinking of! But in this movie, Denzel is NOT playing a character even remotely close to Hannibal!
So, do us all a favor and the next time you wanna spit some BS, at least do some research/homework before submitting your response!

What is this rebellion? Who is rebelling in this period? Gladiatoe definitely strayed from history and there was no Maximus, but this looks way detaches from history, and I can live with that for a good story. But the intifada vibe keeps coming up in movies lately.

We now have a black Proximo, a hispanic Pascal Cesar?, jungle music blaring in the trailer, and Rome seems to have gotten about 10 shades darker in 20 years. Nice to see the DEI money was well spent. Imagine trying so hard to diversify every single movie that your most creative thought is to have rap music blaring in a roman era movie.
