As someone who is not really into Boy Love, this is probably one of the best things I have ever watched, and I'm clearly not the only one who would to see this story told in a full-length feature film or series. The clip already does an amazing job conveying so much in only 4 minutes, but it would allow to delve into details such as Basilis' life back in Padma, what made Van seemingly contemplate suicide before meeting him (EDIT: come to think of it, it might have after he left), at what point they developed romantic feelings for one another and how much time had passed between their separation and reunion. Beside, I just can't get enough of this adorable couple and gorgeous animation. That kiss at the end is everything.

For everyone confused about the story, dont worry! The plot follows two boys, van and basilis. Basilis is the prince of a kingdom called padma, which is in direct contention with earth (they seem to be separated in some way) because padma is a very unforgiving, bigoted nation, and believes itself to be above earth (literally and figuratively). This intense bigotry affects basilis directly as he is gay. His entire life crahes down when his lover (unnamed) is shot by the mallitia, and he is taken in, most likely to be horribly punished. Somehow, he escapes custody and makes his way to the edge of padma, where the police catch up and threaten him once again. To avoid his fate, he jumps off, coming crashing into the ocean near a beach. Another boy, van, finds him. Just before this, van was considering suicide by jumping into the same ocean, but seeing basilis falling snaps him out of it. He rushes to the beach and resuscitates basilis, bringing him back to his own apartment. over several days, they fall in love, but basilis becomes saddened by not being able to accompany van outside. Because of the racial conflict with demons and humans, he cant go in public without being heavily targeted. To try to make up for it, van takes him out to the barren countryside, where they camp and bond where nobody can find them. Here, van learns a bit more about what basilis went through, and when they get back home, he decides to take basilis out, for real. He oufits basilis in human-looking makeup, helps him hide his more obvious demonic atributes, and they go out in the city together. They have an amazing time, but just as they're separated, two men begin picking on basilis. This gives him flashbacks to when he lost his first lover, triggering some part of his demonic nature, making rain begin. basilis's disguise is washed away. Now, exposed and in public, he flees, but forces are dispatched to take care of him. Van rushes back home and finds basilis preparing for what has to happen. Basilis hands him a knife and instructs him to cut off his wings so he can be human. So, van cuts one off, but wont do the other. Basilis reaizes that he doesnt truly want to be human... its everyone else who does. The only other person who doesnt want that is van, but by being there, he puts him in danger. So, he decides to leave, still able to fly with one wing. Van finds his goodbye note the next morning, and to try to recover from the loss of basilis, leaves for the wastes where they had the best times. But out there, instead of a dead landscape, he finds a lush, populated paradise. And, while van drives through, he sees basilis. When he left, he had the same thought of returning to the wastes to hide, and found the haven, where he was welcomed. Van and basilis reunite and finally kiss, going off to live together. Basilis, the demon prince, but half human at his core, and van, who sacrificed everything for him, get their happy ending, together forever : )
Ooh! This was the comment I was looking for!! I thought that they both committed su!c!de when everything got all pretty at the end after seeing the goodbye note. I'm glad I was wrong *audible sigh of relief*
Kinda reminds me of that guy that was going to go buy groceries in a maid suit and his girlfriend tried to stop him and he just said "we love in road island, Noone is gonna bet an eye" I really hope media can start to catch up with our modern trends because it can create a disconnect with the audience Shazam had a similar scene if I'm not mistaken
Here's a terrifying thought: In concentration camps, the Nazi marked gay and trans people with a pink triangle on their clothes (much like the yellow star for jews). Some gays were even left imprisonned in camps after the liberation because of that. You can see at 2:46 after his partner was shot that Basilis wore such a mark (on his collar), so my theory is that in the demon world he was persecuted for being gay but they didn't killed him because of his royal blood. All of this makes the fact that he tried to cut off his wings to conform to the image he thought he had to be, even sadder. Incredible short film, thanks.
To be fair, the rifle in the into looks similar to a Kar98k, most notably known as a rifle used in the German Army during WWII. The men with the guns’ uniforms are also dark, which could also be drawing connections to WW2 Germans
So wait where the devil person where he came from is currently in a nazi like regime…is it before ww2 over there or something over there or is it just me but wait…damn I play way too much of hearts of iron 4
It's such a sad story. Basilis (demon boy) lost someone close to him and wanted Van (human boy) to cut is wings off to live as a human. Imagine being asked to cut a loved one's limb off and watch them scream in pain. The psychological damage alone. Poor boys :( Glad they got their happy ending though but dang.
1:49 judging by here Basilis might be able to regenerate his limbs like a lizard. But at the same time that’s implying that Basilis’s wings are grown and not simply stored inside his body to complete the disguise. If the second one is to be believed then Basilis would have to fight one of his fellow demons to the death well a Metal Gear Rising Revengeance soundtrack play’s in the background, rip off the left wing and get it surgically attached to were his previous left wing was. Or the more boring way Basils could just get a prosthetic wing if that’s possible.
@@Death3579 i think what happened with his wings in the scene you referenced was that they were hidden in the backpack, but what you described is definitely possible!
@@Blazewoods well regardless on where the wings were I hope Basilis can regenerate them seeing that if not then he won’t be able to fly (obviously) and I don’t know about you but I don’t think I would be in such a passion state if I lost the ability to fly
Wait what? Isn't the cutting off of wings symbolic? I mean, Basili tried to fight who he is in order to pretend to be someone he is not (change a demon body into a human body). Cutting off the wing hurt because it was a part of himself and not just a disguise. It's this "naked king concept" form song - trying to strip the robes off a king who doesn't have them, what means trying to change yourself if it's not possible. And I don't want to make you sad but if the wing has not grown back at the end it is an indication that it will never grow back. The severed wing is a symbol of the scarring of experiencing such a dilemma And yes, wings was probably under the backpack in that part Sorry for my english and i hope i helped you ://
The demon has a pink triangle on his collar at 2:47. It might look purple in the lighting, but I'm pretty sure it's pink because the pink triangle was used to mark gays during the holocaust. Great touch there, dang.
Oddly i did not realize it was gay till a few seconds after because of how natural the relationship felt , excellent job, you have made a better showing of a relationship then 99% of movies now a days
The pink triangle catching the light in 2:47 got me. An entire plot explained in one symbol, the viewer's attention being ever so subtlety brought to it.
@@nghiatrong570 yeah @ratkogamer is right. More specifically, the pink triangle here references how in Nazi concentration camps gay men where identified by having pink triangles on their uniforms.
HA I see what you did there. The song is called "The Naked King" and the devils name is Basilis(Βασίλης) which is a name that means king in greek(βασιλιάς). Clever one boiz. Love the attention to detail!
This is incredible, it's only four minutes yet you get so attached to the characters, and to see how happy they are at the end is so heart warming. I love how it's not in your face that it's gay, it's causal representation but there is more to it if you look closer.
@@Peasham Na in you face is like what we see in recent movie's were there character desperately goes out of there way to mention it or its crammed into the story because inclusion was on there check list. Replacing the characters in this with a male and female wouldn't really change the story at all so you cant really call in it your face just because its males. I will say something like this would definitely trigger old-school Christian folk because not only is it gay we also see a devil fall from heaven and basically get accepted by a human.
@@billfred9411 This story necessitates a gay couple since the demon was persecuted against for being gay, as we see with the pink triangle, the thing gay men were branded with in Nazi Germany. Not only is a gay relationship vital to the story, it is likewise deeply political.
Boys and girls, ladies and gentleman, we must correct the atrocity that plagues this video. Why does it not have a few million views? We must abuse the algorithm and get this video the attention it deserves. Seriously, this is one of the best music animations I've seen in awhile, the story and visuals are great and feel like a long journey despite it only being 4 minutes. It's great.
I kid you not I've spent the last hour searching for this because it's been in the back of my mind for ages, and then I close UA-cam, reopen it, and here it is.
I wasn't ready for this to give me a whole Miyazaki movie's worth of emotions in just 4 minutes, but that's what happened and I am on the verge of ugly happy sad tears writing this. 1:13 it makes me incredibly happy how you draw skies 1:22 like I'd hang that on my wall
Oh man that was so good, it was so cheerful to start out, which made the whole bit with the wing so much more coarse and brutal. He wanted to cripple himself just to fit in, and he went through with it ultimately for nothing. In many ways it reminded me of self harm scars, and the lengths this world pushes us to, and the irreversible damage that all too many people end up going through.
Just commenting here to do my bit in pushing the algorithm to spread this beautiful piece of art to other people. Seriously, it's amazing, I love it so much. To everyone involved, please keep doing more captivating music and lyrics, and keep creating such fantastic animations! Your work is great!
I REMEMBER WHEN THIS CAME OUT, AND I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FORWARD TO WATCH IT AGAIN! i loved this animation so much, and it was actually a huge inspiration in my lifetime as an artist!
Thought Basilis is just how Van viewed his inner self. Story starts off with him contemplating suicide and not going through with it and bringing his inner demon back home again, hiding him away. When they get away from the city for the first time they drive through a literal wasteland and while Basilis seems to quite like this I thought it's just getting away from others and possible prejudice. Also Van holding Basilis' photo in the tent scene seems to moreso be his own? Once pressured by bullies (rain scene) he gets depressed again and relapses until getting away from it all in the end and finding a group of people to fit in with where his world simultaneously gets all its color back and he accepts Basilis and himself for what he is? I thought this is fantastic use of symbolism very cool
I never actually thought of it in this way, but I'd say it probably has some truth. If anything, I think it's the best kind of art, in that it can be interpreted in any way the viewer sees fit. The very literal, a gay romance between a human living life as a ghost and a demon shunned for who he was in his own realm. Symbolically, where Basilis' demonic appearance is more a representation of how *he* feels; alienated, isolated, and afraid of judgement. Only learning to accept who he was and not allowing others to dictate his own destiny after enduring trauma and agony with a handful of people (the most important being Van of course) who never judged him for any of those things. Or the even more symbolic, where Basilis is Van's internalized view of himself. Everything that happens between them is Van learning to accept the "demon" within him, and the "haggling" scene where Basilis is being harassed by two strangers causes Van to relapse and believe himself to be flawed on an internal level, which is then followed by the "mutilation" scene, where he tries to forcefully sever from himself the aspects he believes to be ruining his life. This only overtakes him with grief and pain, unable to bring himself to destroy the parts of himself he had grown to love. Eventually, it's all wrapped up with the kiss, where Van is finally able to allow himself to not be consumed by shame and to love himself, symbolized by, once Van and Basilis reunite, their hands remaining locked for the rest of the video.
a lot of the comments are calling Van a girl... the whole point of the video is that Basilis is gay (note the pink triangle on the collar at 2:47) and his lover was killed by the devil authorities. Basilis leaves Van not just because he is a devil in the human world but because he still believes that the love he feels for another man can't be accepted. When he finds a community that supports him for who he is, he's able to openly show his love for Van. It's similar to Lil Nas X's Montero - the protagonist accepts and loves himself in defiance of a society that tells him his identity is sinful.
Honestly, when I first saw clips of this in the Super Eyepatch Wolf video, I couldn’t tell if they were both guys or both girls, all I could tell was that they are definitely gay for each other.
@@Falkenschwinge Hmm, first they drive through a desolated land with no color and in the end the area is a vast, lively, green field. Maybe it represents the clashing views and that any type of sexuality should be seen as natural/normal cause trees = nature? And trees have roots. Rooted in society i.e. always been a part of us. Just my idea.
Beautiful style, fluid animation, a solid song, a cute monster, and a tear jerking gay romance, what is there not to love? Thank you once again Super Eyepatch Wolf for recommending me something wonderful, and may we be able to strike against the youtube algorithm!
I'm basically French, but hey, I'll make the effort to translate: I wanted to say a big thank you to the developers for presenting us with such wonders; I liked everything about this animation, the music, the history, the animation, ... ay slt, ton anglais est très bien, juste "developers" et "history" marchent mieux si c'est "makers" et "story", sinnon c'est comprehensible! Mais oui, cette chanson et cette vidéo sont incroyable
Another detail, the landscape at 3:02 is the same landscape at 1:10 , except instead of a barren desolate wasteland, the landscape is blooming, blossoming, and the houses are renovated. It seems Basilis has found more acceptance in the mortal world from humans than he did in his own kingdom, among his own kind. Lovely animation, very sweet, kind hearted message.
I remember watching this a long time ago but not remembering the name and… here I am still the way I remember great story, animation and song (though I still have to watch it with subtitles .-.)

The story of this seems obvious when reviewed, though I will simply give a synapses. But yea, Spoiler Warning The story starts with a young adult by the name of Van making a trip to the sea, possibly contemplating suicide, but deciding not to go through with it. At nearly the same time, two demons in uniform have a third demon trapped on a platform over a sheer cliff. Van, on his way back from his failed suicide attempt; witnesses someone falling from the sky into the ocean, and proceeds to save them and perform CPR. Taking the demon home after saving their life, the demon wakes up the next day to discover that they are in a world that seems similar to their own, as the demon states himself as Basilis. Van offers to aid Basilis by providing clothing and food, while Basilis shows that they understand most of the various forms of chores and entertainment as Van. Later, Van has to go to work, stating to Basilis that he'll be back. During the middle of work, Van goes home to a Basilis who appears fairly lonely and startled by the sudden reappearance of Van. That night, Van and Basilis in the cover of night leave the city, eventually making it out to the country side, and though it is a barren dust bowl, with only dead shrubs, and abandoned houses around them, they camp out for the night in the desert. While Basilis is still asleep Van discovers a picture, showing Basilis, and an unknown demon smiling next to each other. Upon returning to the city, Van applies makeup, and a disguise to help Basilis blend in with society, and explore the city. As they move though the city, various signs show civil unrest and frustration at the water shortage and rationing. When Vans has to use the restroom, Basilis is startled by someone giving him flashbacks to an unknown event with a shooting. The person who startled him are two men, who harass Basilis to the point of trying to get away from them. As one of the men touches Basilis, a sudden downpour of begins to wash away Basilis's makeup, and give him enough time to get away from the harassers who are seemingly awestruck by the downpour. In an attempt to get away from the rain, Basilis trips, but instinctively spreads his wings in order to avoid falling, revealing himself in the middle of a crowd of people. Van, upon discovering that it is raining, and Basilis is nowhere in sight, looks for his friend in a panic before spotting him in the air flying away and back home. As the pair make it back to safety, the rain causes a massive growth in various plant life, causing general chaos in the streets that mobilize the CSIF (no idea what they are aside from a police force) to mobilize. Once home, Basilis prompts Vans to cut off his demonic traits, such as his wings and tail in order to blend into society without fear of being caught. Van agrees, though upon cutting off the first wing, throws the knife away in disgust; before embracing a self destructive Basilis as he tries to rip off his own tail. After treating and bandaging up the wound, Van falls asleep crying at the situation. The next morning, Van discovers a note from the now missing Basilis stating that Van would be better off without him causing trouble, but also reveals that Basilis has a love interest in Van. We are then shown Basilis with his lover from the picture being discovered, and his lover being shot to death, with Basilis being spared due to the fact that he is the Royal Prince of Padma. He is then both collared and labeled with a pink triangle tag, stating his sexual orientation, and sent to what appears to be a concentration camp of some sort. Basilis eventually escapes, but is cornered, though it is obvious that he is wanted alive rather than dead, and instead of being imprisoned, decides to jump to his death, where he is seen by Van. Some time later, Van is traveling in his car through the countryside possibly in search for Basilis. Eventually Van discovers that the recent downpour of rain has ended the drought, and brought vibrant life to what was originally a barren dustbowl. Driving past what use to be ruined building now rebuilt into houses and farmlands, Van spots Basilis with several others who appear to be companions. Stopping the car, Van exits his vehicle, and approaches. As Basilis realizes that it's Van, he shows hesitation. After a moment of encouragement from his companions, Basilis runs towards Van before embracing him, and drawing him in for a kiss. Helping Van up, Basilis confesses his love to Van, who acknowledges his feelings as well, before we are shown Basilis introducing his companions. We are then shown in the distance that the rains have returned, and that Van and Basilis now live together on the farms.
@@chatleslorenzo6164 Van is only suggested to be male due to Basilis's sexual preference. Outside of that, Van's gender is not stated directly by the video as Van has no defining things within their home to indicate whether male or female, and the restroom that they use is unisexed. We do know that Basilis was persecuted by his people for his sexuality, as he was tagged with a pink triangle. The Pink Triangle has important significance in history as a label for homosexuality, and while originally a badge of shame, the LBGTQ community has reclaimed it as both a reminder of the past horrors from WWII, and a badge of self identification and pride in one self. Feel free to look up more about the Pink Triangle, as events from WWII should never be forgotten to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
@@ShadowZeroFlame Indeed, that is the very short version, though one could say that it underplays the importance of the story. It's not so much dramatic as it is a blend of Self Discovery and Overcoming Tragedy. I think a lot about Van is left out to show that Van doesn't even know what he wants, as he works as a janitor for a random building. We can tell that Van lives alone, and probably even drinks, due to Vodka being seen as a thing he kept, even if he used it to sterilize Basilis's amputated wing. The book titles could probably give more insight into Van, but I haven't bothered to look into them yet.
In one of the flashbacks, the demon boy is wearing a pink triangle tag. That's the same thing the nazis would make gay people wear during the holocaust.
Yeah, you can see he's also in bed with another male demon, so possibly his lover. So I'm guessing that it's about accepting your identity in a society that thinks what you are is sinful
@@StarRaider12345 The triangle is a tag hanging from his collar, attached to a chain. That was put on him by his captors. He was being persecuted for his relationship.
The story told in the short film, in my humble opinion, is just as beautiful as the music written for it. You can have a few different interpretations of the details, but ultimately it is about boy love 🏳️🌈 and I think it speaks loudly for itself. Recommend this to your friends!

Wow! Thanks for the curiosity! Now all makes sense to me! I didn't know this fact, it's very sad… :,(
But it makes total sense with this animation!
@@user-gv9kv6pp3syour english is great!
The severed wing is a symbol of the scarring of experiencing such a dilemma
And yes, wings was probably under the backpack in that part
Sorry for my english and i hope i helped you ://

Reminds me a bit of Yubel from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
a lot of the comments are calling Van a girl... the whole point of the video is that Basilis is gay (note the pink triangle on the collar at 2:47) and his lover was killed by the devil authorities. Basilis leaves Van not just because he is a devil in the human world but because he still believes that the love he feels for another man can't be accepted. When he finds a community that supports him for who he is, he's able to openly show his love for Van. It's similar to Lil Nas X's Montero - the protagonist accepts and loves himself in defiance of a society that tells him his identity is sinful.
oh damn, it went a lot deeper than I thought at first.
thanks for the explanation dawg!
as in,, there's absolut vodka at 2:44 - we should've known
Honestly, when I first saw clips of this in the Super Eyepatch Wolf video, I couldn’t tell if they were both guys or both girls, all I could tell was that they are definitely gay for each other.
OK, i get that part now. But why is the city destroyed by trees?
@@Falkenschwinge Hmm, first they drive through a desolated land with no color and in the end the area is a vast, lively, green field. Maybe it represents the clashing views and that any type of sexuality should be seen as natural/normal cause trees = nature? And trees have roots. Rooted in society i.e. always been a part of us. Just my idea.
Let's make this so popular that they'll have to make a series
Beautiful style, fluid animation, a solid song, a cute monster, and a tear jerking gay romance, what is there not to love? Thank you once again Super Eyepatch Wolf for recommending me something wonderful, and may we be able to strike against the youtube algorithm!

The story of this seems obvious when reviewed, though I will simply give a synapses. But yea, Spoiler Warning
The story starts with a young adult by the name of Van making a trip to the sea, possibly contemplating suicide, but deciding not to go through with it.
We are then shown in the distance that the rains have returned, and that Van and Basilis now live together on the farms.
is van a female or male ? i know how to tell any more tell cus anime femboy
@@TheTimeWornSoul TL;DR a dramatic love story of two femboys with happy ending!

らっパルさんとの2度目のコラボMV最高過ぎる………………。この歌詞と音楽と映像の世界観が本当に大好き。二度と言わず何度でもコラボしてほしい本当に切実に。
the animation is gorgeous
Unlike any art style I ever seen on TV. I love how much of a story and context there is that is given without words, and very quickly. Just a few quick expressions and movements, you tell so much with it. Epic work!
this was so beautiful 😭🥰 i need more of this
