  • In this video I explain a quick and easy method for carrying your kayak: simpler than a kayak backpack, but much better than just putting the boat on your shoulder.

You can put a quick disconnect in the strap so it can be disconnected quickly.

Wow, I like that a lot! Quick to assemble, and uses something every kayaker already has

Hi Robin, great idea! I just tried this (and about a half-dozen variations) with my Nomad. It doesn't quite work for this boat because the only spot to get the strap behind the front pillar is way down at the bottom of the hull, making the straps pull my shoulder back pretty far into the cockpit when carrying, which puts a lot of stress on the back of my head and neck. Your method did inspire a good final solution however, and ended up being even more simple. I just put a carabiner on the aluminum foot-brace stay, just in front of the adjustable nut and attach a loop of webbing (both ends) to the carabiner. Takes literally about 2 seconds to clip it on and you are on your way, no feeding through anything necessary, and at least for my body dimensions, the webbing ends up being just about the ideal length to also double as my emergency tow-tether which can be used for other rescue rigging. Also, if you have a long hike, or a situation where you need to switch shoulders on an approach, again it only takes about 2 seconds to unclip from one brace stay to the other. Thanks for your inspiration!

Hi Jamie, I'm delighted that my video helped. Yes, I'm sure there are hundreds of variations on this theme. One simple version I tried was just a 2 metre strap around the central pillar. I'm sure the optimum design depends on the model of boat and dimensions of the paddler.

Thanks ,works fine with 3m cam buckle strap, which can be adjusted to get the loop length right by tightening the cam buckle

Hey Robin, this looks great. Could you please share the measurements of the strap you are using. Are you using different straps for different boats?

I think it was a 3m strap, but I’ll check. I’ve only tried this method with my creekboat.

Yes, I used a 3m strap. You could probably use a 2m strap if you just go round the central pillar and don’t clip onto an attachment point on the stern as I did. Just make sure that the strap is thick so it spreads the load.

Robin ALWAYS has the right length of strap for the job at hand. That's what they say...

Position a quick release snap so you could release it in emergency

I like it. Have you tested it with a fully loaded boat?

It works well with a loaded boat. I have found that it's less effective with short boats.
