I led a club trip down this (at the wet west) and a guy I was leading ended up in a coma. on review he'd lied about his experience of that drop (he had a cracked rib two weeks before which he lied about). Astonishingly the club committee gave him an award. Result was leaving the club alas.

I started wwkayaing when the perception dancer was the one of the only plastic kayak, soon after came the dagger crossfire big change. I was friend with a paddleshop dealer so got the very first Dagger transition (awful design) then the first RPM in western canada. After that Corran Addison showed me kevlar hammer surfboat which I got in crosslined poly soon after. I also got to paddle Spike the designer from Necky kayaks the rip and the Jive prototypes. All the while squirt boating my enigma squirt boat on and off.

I followed and enjoyed your comments and perspectives especially on soloing in the paddle forum from way back when you were 'small Robin'. Great to recently rediscover you on UA-cam and to find out you have another string to your bow..! These videos are really top drawer, especially with the overdub comments.

I was hard into kayaking from about 81 to 97. Best times of my entire life. Seems like as I got older the desire to spend all day driving to/from a river sort of faded away. Now I do lots of mountain biking and hiking but I miss those river trips.

Definition of old school kayaking. Is you how to be a kayaker. Definition of new school kayaking is you have to have a kayak. The kayaks today make it so much easier to do stuff that you had to really work hard to do in the past.

Hi Robin, great idea! I just tried this (and about a half-dozen variations) with my Nomad. It doesn't quite work for this boat because the only spot to get the strap behind the front pillar is way down at the bottom of the hull, making the straps pull my shoulder back pretty far into the cockpit when carrying, which puts a lot of stress on the back of my head and neck. Your method did inspire a good final solution however, and ended up being even more simple. I just put a carabiner on the aluminum foot-brace stay, just in front of the adjustable nut and attach a loop of webbing (both ends) to the carabiner. Takes literally about 2 seconds to clip it on and you are on your way, no feeding through anything necessary, and at least for my body dimensions, the webbing ends up being just about the ideal length to also double as my emergency tow-tether which can be used for other rescue rigging. Also, if you have a long hike, or a situation where you need to switch shoulders on an approach, again it only takes about 2 seconds to unclip from one brace stay to the other. Thanks for your inspiration!

Hi Jamie, I'm delighted that my video helped. Yes, I'm sure there are hundreds of variations on this theme. One simple version I tried was just a 2 metre strap around the central pillar. I'm sure the optimum design depends on the model of boat and dimensions of the paddler.

"Sorry, you're gonna have to do this on your own!" YIKES. Not words you want to hear when you are swimming. But a good call on your part. No point in trying to help him any further until he swims through the next rapid.
