  • Is this the solution to dirty windows on these air cleaners? I think so! Aside from looks, this modification will stop dirty oily air from entering your engine via the intake and will keep your pistons clean. This is a huge win for engine performance & longevity!! Theres tons of kits from DK customs for other air filters as well as kits from DK for modding a stock air filter to vent externally. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks for watching and check out some of the links below!

    I went with a D K Customs catch can held by a Kuryakyn P clamp , 1 3/8 to 1 1/2 , mounted to a bolt at my rear V&H exhaust bracket with a rubber 90 elbow and bent up and form fitted a stainless steel 5 /16 tube that runs to the same place as your T fitting , i also used two rubber insulated brake line p clamps on the rear tappet cover bolts , realy solid ,

    I just built my own EBS on my stock 114 breather and used 1/4” fuel line from Lowe’s and I recommend using something more pliable if possible. The fuel line is pretty thick and a little difficult to maneuver. I was thinking I needed something thick because of heat but that’s easily avoidable if you route it the way you did.
    Also when you use the stock breather you have to drill holes in the backplate, so be prepared. I’m kinda just throwing it together right now and see what I like and don’t like about it? Spent less than $20 on it so far.
    I’ll eventually put the 636 from DK on the bike with a legitimate EBS and catch can from them as well. This is just a temporary fix.

    Spoke with a few HD shops and for the M8 they said most of the "mist" is burned off long as you're not making too many short trips. I just hit 10k and put a scope down mine and the heads and pistons are very clean. SYN3 oil every 4k miles as well all the way around.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  3 роки тому

      I’ve heard from a few H-D techs online with m8’s who say the opposite as well as people showing the inside of their pistons. It might be burned off but what’s getting left behind in the install and engine after it’s burned? I’d rather vent externally and keep that gunk out of there

      @TA.Muscle Рік тому

      Cars have a PCV valve that works in the same manner as the Trask tranny cover with that reed valve. The PCV valve allows gasses that escape the combustion chamber past the piston rings to vent from the crankcase then into the intake so it's environmental friendly. MoCo is doing the same by routing the blow-by gasses back into air cleaner/throttle body. The engine needs to breath, so routing the blow-by back into the crankcase is not good idea. Routing to a vented catch can is a better solution in my opinion.

    Say man the one thing I foresee is that there are no vent holes in the catch can, now I don’t necessarily think you need them, but if air is coming out then it needs a place for it to go or it becomes pressurized right? 🤔 maybe a few small holes on the lid of the “fuel filter catch can”? New subscriber.... ive hearing alot on the oil mist.
    I ride street 750 revolution x and have seen oil on the filter since new in 2015. I asked Harley got no answer until this year.
    Thought I'd ask you if you would put breather on it. I like this bike.
    Need a drip can ?
    Im retired and its light weight speedy and water cooled.
    What I have done is change the oil and filter alot. Im seeing gray wear in the oil but not chunks or slivers.
    I did have the starter assembly 1 way bearing go out. Harley had no answered to my questions or part numbers. Loud bell ringing noise. I got it fixed $20 ebay 1way bearing. Case gasket.
    Dealer I bought bike from here in Canton Ohio went bully up. Freedom Harley. I did get help from Dovers Adventure Harley. At least I was able to come in and both go thru there parts listing. Order a parts list book and pdf file on break down.

      So I’m not too familiar with the street 750’s. I know blow by is a big issue with the m8 motors more than any others. If you are having excessive mist come from your breather bolts it couldn’t hurt to do an external breather. And if something more serious is going on like an oil pump or ring seating issue you’ll be able to see just how much mist is coming out when you isolate the issue

    I put my spacers behind the breather bolts with the outlets pointed up on my sporty and ran from the front cylinder to T on the rest cylinder and out and down to the belt guard. No oil comes out of it at all, as gravity holds it in the engine. It's been on there for about 3 years now.

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  Рік тому

      That’s not how that works at all. Gravity cannot keep it in the engine because those are butterfly valves. They do not allow anything into the engine but they’ll oil out when there is excessive pressure. You more than likely just have a good set up and a bike with a good ring seat meant and no issue with blow by.

The m8’s have even more blow by than normal due to crap tolerances, and the balancer in the crankcase

      I’m not doing anything to make anything more acceptable. And if you knew exactly what I was talking about or listen to the video the reason that Harley and many other manufacturers vent the crank case pressure back into the intake is due to EPA regulations. And a lot of other brands have owners who do similar mods. And part of the culture and love behind Harley is being able to individualize and personalize your bike right down to every last bolt and hardware piece. That is a huge drive behind people buying the brand. Some people enjoy modifying their bikes to make them different or better than stock form

      Ok? Some bikes have worse blow by then others. Depends on rpm levels, riding style, etc. doesn’t mean the fluid wasn’t there. Just means it got sucked in to the intake instead of fell on the filter

      @@RidinDad I put an external breather. I had the catch can for a while and it would expell the fluid from the top vents. Then I used a filter from Amazon. I washed it every three weeks or so when washing my bike. That's why it never leaked. It was on my twin cam 103 and I rode it hard. Going to do the ebs on my new trike after I do the stage 1 in Feb.

      I'm a little lost on what you're wanting to happen. The one way valves at the breathers already exist. They only allow excessive pressure to vent out.

      @RulgertGhostalker 2 роки тому

      @@RidinDad i am talking aftermarket valves made of a more compliant, yet just as durable, alternate substance ( eg.Viton, Neoprene...something more supple, but i am no expert there. )
      i suppose one could alternately examine the substrate, of the casting, that the valves act upon; and address any issues, found there, under a magnifying loupe...

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t understand why you are wanting that though? There’s nothing wrong with the valves. Very seldom does one of them fail and they are usually very good. The issue is with the tolerance between the rings and the cylinder walls. That’s what builds up the excess of blow by and causes all of the gunk to exit the breather bolts. So I don’t understand why you are wanting different valves when they are doing their job

    • @RulgertGhostalker
      @RulgertGhostalker 2 роки тому

      Still don’t understand your issue with the valves. In my opinion they’re doing their job just fine. The issue is before the valves. Blow by, factory tolerances etc.

    I fail to comprehend how and why the MoCo, in this day and age, couldn't foresee this issue and ensure it wasn't on the bikes they happily released for sale to an unsuspecting customer base. This is basic engineering failure, and every sold motorcycle should be recalled and repaired at the company's expense. Not good enough, not even close. Kind of glad I didn't outlay my hard-earned for this debacle.
    Shame on you Harley Davidson. Is this what you think of your loyal customers?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 роки тому +1

      Well Harley had to recycle the oil to the intake due to epa regulations. Just like about 90% of of other motorcycle manufacturers. Some just have slightly better ways of doing it.

    • @zwastiunburzy3688
      @zwastiunburzy3688 2 роки тому

      @@RidinDad But that's my whole point. They already were aware of this issue, they must've done thousands of hours of testing, surely they would've noticed the problem and come up with a solution before selling the bikes to unsuspecting customers. Or is that too much to ask?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 роки тому

      I don’t understand what you are wanting from them exactly. We are both on the same page as far as why they had to vented the way they did so the only thing I can see with you arguing about them doing from the factory is just having the lower tolerances for the Pistons and the rings and having the extra balancer in the MA engines causing hire cavitation and more crank case pressure and increased blow by to begin with. In which case yes a somewhat agree with you but the bikes work completely fine. It’s just a matter of what you want to do to your own and for what reasons

    • @zwastiunburzy3688
      @zwastiunburzy3688 2 роки тому +1

      @@RidinDad I understand what you're saying, what I'm trying to say is that the customer is paying a large amount for a premium product. For the price, you would expect (well, I would anyway, I've bought two new Harley's, nowhere near as many as some, but I'm not rich), that this issue would've arisen during testing, wouldn't it? And if it did, why couldn't it have been sorted before releasing the bikes to be sold? Maybe I'm being too fussy? I don't think I am, I realise there's no such thing as a perfect product, and that in the scheme of things a bit of oil ending up on top of your pistons may not be a big deal, but if the issue is as easily dealt with as it appears to be, why couldn't that happen before the point of sale? Do you think I'm being unreasonable in expecting a potentially harmful to the engine issue to be rectified before you buy it, then having to rectify it yourself? If that's the case, and you believe I am asking too much of the MoCo, all I can say to that is you're easily pleased. To buy a Harley in Australia, the prices for a big twin are now around the 30K zone, more than a lot of cars. My first Harley was a new '91 Heritage Softail, and as that bike aged, it started to do the same thing that the new HD's are doing now. Don't you think that they've had plenty of time to think about a solution, and not leave it up to the customer to rectify?

    • @RidinDad
      @RidinDad  2 роки тому +2

      I don’t think you are asking too much I understand what you are talking about. However pretty much all of us don’t know anything about Harleys just kind of understand that you pay to play and that is the par for the course with them. If you want a problem free bike that you don’t have to do anything with you can buy a Honda Goldwing and ride that for 200,000 miles with nothing but scheduled maintenance. It just is what it is, Harley‘s are made a completely different way and that’s why they experienced the troubles that they have. And no, from the factory they can’t do anything about it like the fixes that I’ve been showing because the EPA regulates it and it cannot vent to the atmosphere. That’s the whole issue with us problem.

I thought maybe i pinched the gasket ( because it was so much fun taking it off and on). The oil looked like it was dripping out the exhaust on the left side of the bike. After further investigation, I found it was coming out the CheckM8 filter. Completely gunked up my CVO where it dripped down just under the side cover and went all over the engine bay. I will be reaching out to Trask ( they seem like nice people) maybe they can help me out.
