This Band Would Have Been BIGGER Than Nirvana

  • During the late 1980s, before we rolled into the 90s, the grunge movement was starting to take shape, and it was just going to boil over and explode onto the world. Obviously that is what happened. There's some bands that just didn't get the exposure that others did, and there's some bands due to unfortunate circumstances that didn't get to continue what could have been and iconic , Mother Love Bone is one of those bands. Mother Love Bone was short lived due to the death of lead singer Andrew Wood. Now, Andrew Wood was one of the most amazing frontman and could have easily been the spokesperson for him and his band to lead grunge into the new era. But unfortunately, due to Andrew's death, that was cut short, and obviously Nirvana stepped in and was that band, but I firmly believe had Andrew not died, Mother Love Bone would have been that band.

Dude I know this is sacrilege, but I just don't hear it with MLB. I like a couple of their songs, but I recall being floored by how peripheral the album sounded when I finally bought it in the 2000s.
Nirvana would've still been Nirvana, and they'd have still blew the doors off all on their company.
Mother Love Bone would've needed to quietly and quickly adapt a bit of edge to their sound, a bit of that Pearl Jam'ness.
Ironically, I find all of that music has aged extremely well, EXCEPT Pearl Jam's early efforts and Mother Love Bone, especially. Mother Love Bone sounds like 25% T. Rex, 25% Warrant, 25% Crazy Horse, 25% unspecified Glam/Hair Metal, imo. Luckily, they had an incredible talent out front, and I do not doubt Wood could've assessed the musical landscape, surveyed a new, distinctly grungier course in the company of Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell (roommates), and his other friends on the scene, and maybe they could've put out their version of "Ten" by 1992, but "Apple," or whatever their debut is titled would not have held them up even had Wood survived. They needed a giant second record, and while Wood could've unquestionably done it, my money would've been on him fronting yet another band, possibly with Kevin Wood + another band, like guys Gruntruck, Truly, Cat Butt, Girl Trouble, U-Men, Screaming Trees, etcetera. Such a depth of talent to play with, and Andy could've taken each of them to the next level, but MLB wasn't it for him, I don't think.

Awesome comment. I really appreciate you taking the time and love the opinion you have there, in the end i still believe if Mother Love Bone got into the studio of a much bigger production company like Geffen or with a producer like Butch Vig that could have really helped them grind out another album. I think it could have been pretty big, but again, we'll never know, and we got what we got from Nirvana. In the end we got a lot of great music. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 🤙 🙏

I never bothered with the band because of their name. It just sounded stupid to me. It seemed just like "Stone Temple Pilots" who grabbed STP, these guys grabbed "Major League Baseball" and used three words that matched MLB, and ran with it. Plus, MLB's "sound" was stuck in the 80s, they sounded like Poison and every other "Going out of style 80s band" by the start of the 90s.

MLB was a strange brew. Their sound was on the why out, yet everyone talked about them as if they were going to be the next big thing. The talent was obviously there, but the musical direction wasn’t. Even if AW survived, I highly doubt the band would have.

Mother Love Bone wouldn't have even been known if not for Nirvana, chances are AIC, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam as well. Not to take away from the greatness of Mother Love Bone, or Andrew Wood, but he was the missing link between 80s Glam singers and the new Seattle sound. You can hear the Motley Crew Vince Neil voice in his vocals, not to mention the Big Aquanet Hair. Though Andrew made an impact on Seattle and his later Iconic grunge friends, MLB would've still drowned in Nirvana's wake.

Yeah, I remember when Andy Wood OD'd and the impact it had locally. I don't really agree with your take on things, MLB wasn't really the frontrunner. Soundgarden's first LP was sold really widely even before superunknown, and locally the "breakout" buzz was on Tad. I never really figured MLB or Malfunktion in under "grunge", they were a bit too on the glam side for that to really fit. Nirvana got huge because they came around when people were ready for the next thing, and MLB would have probably ended up another one hit wonder, swept away with every other glam act by the grunge juggernaut.

And I say that as someone who was too old at the time to fully appreciate grunge in general.
But I still stand by my limited analysis. Nirvana is still the only one for me.
My biggest regret is not realising this too late, though, but that Kurt never realized what it was he was really looking for.

Um, no. Interesting idea but delusional. You're attributing great future accomplishments to a band that never produced any great works. Would'a, Could'a - Didn't.
I could give you 10 bands from the same era that you could swap out with the words "Mother Love Bone" and it would have the same effect. Bands who actually recorded good albums, which Lovebone never did. I lived in Dallas, and I saw Mother Love Bone in 89 or 90...somewhere around there. I had to use a fake ID, I wasn't even old enough to buy cigarettes. I knew nothing about them, never heard of any of those bands before seeing them live. They were okay, but I remember the drumming being terrible and the music was hokey & derivative of popular music of the time. This is Post-Jane's addiction we're talking about, so we thought MotherLoveBone was corny and didn't buy their album. I don't need to refresh my memory either, it was hairband-esque.
Then I saw Nirvana at Trees in 91 - cold, never heard their name before. I've never been THAT moved, that excited, that amped up from seeing a band, cold, in my entire life - STILL haven't. That show changed us, our lives were never the same again. After the show, we literally were telling each other "that band is going to be huge" - we'd never described bands like that before. Their sound was completely new, like it was "high-art" - We told each other, "It sounds iconic." - THAT is how intense they were when Nirvana was new.
Jane's Addiction had a much bigger impact on me than Nirvana did but in 1990 I wasn't going in "cold" to see them the 1st time while tripping on LSD at the Bronco Bowl. Seattle wasn't the city responsible for changing music, LA was. Jane's Addiction was the FIRST and most influential band of the 90s revolution, they deserve all credit. The Nirvana supernova would have never happened without Jane's Addiction. If you lived through that time and you had a good musical taste - you know exactly what I'm talking about. GunsNRoses broke the dam, JanesAddiction broke new ground. These are facts, not opinions.
The only other band that I moved me that I saw live, cold without knowing anything about them, was Mooney Suzuki - but that was more of a shock and pleasantly surprised, I didn't feel like I just witnessed history. The Mooney Suzuki were touring the People Get Ready album, incredible live performance. I also saw the Murder Junkies and that show changed me too, but I was well aware of GG, we went as a feat of overcoming fear - not to hear great music.
I can still smell that show.
