I know it’s the limitations of the time but I adore arcade games with this flat shaded low poly art style, they’re so bright and colourful and bursting with charm
Wow, memories..... I was working for Namco when that came out. I remember it came in three big boxes. The screens and then two chairs. It took us no time at all to put that thing together.
It's a great game, unfortunately a lot of these larger games the distributors trashed after they stopped earning! Now that more and more people are getting back into them everybody wants the 'deluxe' or nice cabinets like this one.
@@LyonsArcade I’m glad you are keeping that stuff relative! The classic arcades can’t be forgotten! Have you found any hs13/Aircombat, or Alpine racer?
I know I'm 7 years late saying this, but Cyber Commando (1994) is the sequel to this! it was never ported to any console tho. luckily got to play it last time I was in Japan. real fun
I have one of these in my garage. Bought it for 75 bucks "broken", but it just needed a second power supply. It's been working ever since. I've been fixing arcade games for over 25 years, so I had easy access to materials. Love this game. Thanks for sharing.
amazing to see this played this game so much in arcades back then - the only thing id say, is i remember the ones we played on had speakers in the seats, so sound would come out from behind your head.
I remember the first (and only) time seeing this game in the arcade. It seems the bigger cabinets didn't last that long as they took up valuable space. Took me years to track it down but finally did get the PS1 copy
How are the controls mapped onto the Dualshock? As far as I understand, it's unfortunate that it didn't support PS1 console system link like Assault Riggs and Krazy Ivan did.
I remember when Hannibal (2001) came out because I was playing Cyber Sled at the tiny arcade the movie theater had and as I walked out I saw the poster for the movie. Think I was the only one that played Cyber Sled because by 2001 it was an old game with dated graphics. I still loved it.
I remember seeing it in the arcades and movie theatres too, I think since Namco made it the thing was everywhere for a little while. Lots of operators trusted Namco to make great games.
Walt Disney World use to have these things all over their resort - I remember playing it a lot in the 90s at several locations in WDW. Haven't seen one in over 15 years now - would love to get one at some point!
Pretty good rare arcade game. I think I was one of the lucky ones to play this obscure game back when 3D games were starting to be a thing. The controls take a lot of practice for me to get used to, though.
I can't believe some of the arcade operators removed the beacon lights from some of the "Cyber Sled" arcade machines because they thought they were "annoying" even though they were actually cool!
Loved this game in head-to-head. Remember how noisy a good old arcade could get? I remember one time getting so crazy playing this game the arcade attendant came over to tell us to keep it down... good times.
In light of Assault Riggs and Krazy Ivan and some other PS1 titles having support for PS1 console system link, I was disappointed to hear/read that Cyber Sled wasn't coded for it nor, from what I understand, the Sony SCPH-1110 Analog Joystick controllers. How are the controls mapped to the Dualshock sticks?
I just bought one of these also. It seems to work but need to go over it, cleaning and adjusting whats needed. Mine has the red beacons. Looks like a rare and fun game for my arcade! Thanks for the video.
This game looks like "Combat" for the Atari 2600, if it was one of those early Virtual Reality games from the late 80s/early 90s, like "Dactyl Nightmare", don't you think?
I'm actually glad I got this on MAME running very well. Also, the guy you saw on the side of the cabinet is Madison Hawk, the pilot of the first tank (when you enter Training Practice or select him in VS Computer Combat). I've actually beaten this game, too!
@@That_Handle Regarding the controllers, I was not using the sticks at the time, nor so I have them. And as far as the linkage for head to head, I'm not certain if it's possible to pan that out in the emulation, unless the later development of the emulators for the game integrated it within it.
I remember playing a game very, very much like this when was a kid, and I think I tried it. The control scheme is exactly how I remembered it, but I'm not 100% sure this is the one I remember. I say that because, the way I remember this game, the guns *jammed* if you fired them for too long---"overheat" is not what I remember!
If i'm going to pick up a game that take up that much space it has to be ether Cybersled or Virtual On. I'm in the middle of a prototyping something similar that at the moment is designed for a more standard joystick and 3/6 button layout. Still in the early stages of dev so things are likely to change. Just recently ordered the PS1 game and a stack of similar games for research. Poor console library is going to be getting a work out for a while.
Yup. One of the most underrated games, I don't know why they don't do something similar, me and someone were just talking about that a couple days ago. Thanks for watching Joe Ruth!
Yeah, tho the PS1 had a port, it didn't support use of the Sony SCPH-1110 Analog Joystick controller nor PS1 console system link like Assault Riggs did. Nowadays, it shouldn't be difficult to code for at least LAN-play between a couple or more consoles if not also for online MP. Supporting today's arcade fighter joystick stick panels has a twist - if analog control can be included with the 8-way/ 4-way switches - and therein have a function switch for twin-stick mode instead of 2-player.
@@That_Handle Agreed. Great comment. I used to bet people on this game in the arcade. Always picked gray tank. I have a zero turn mower, I pretend I am in this game every once in a while... lol
We had someone offer to sell us one a little while back but it was really far away and not feasible to pick up... so there's still a few of them floating around out there :)
I just picked this arcade yesterday...for free!!! I know right?! Free! It's really dirty but it functions well for the condition. It's mostly intact. I need to fix the wood right under the metal plate where your feet go. Also, the joysticks have a constant drift. To adjust those, is it the blue potentiometers on the board connected to the joysticks? And the tubes look pretty dim. I did test it in my garage, so maybe it was the light but the red side looked brighter than the blue. Is there a way to adjust that also? And one more question, is it possible and probable to swap the CRT's for some LCD flat panels? How hard would that be? I knew to the arcade building stuff. But I'm a project guy, and I'm very good with my hands. I'll post a vid of my unit here soon.
If you look in the manual (you can find it online) it shows you how to adjust those pots and get it just right... I think when we did ours we had a pot we had to replace, too to get it right. The monitors are a whole different story, yes you can replace them with LCD's but they won't fit very good, and the aspect ratio will be off... and it doesn't hook up easily, etc. Pretty tough to pull off. We usually rebuild the monitors, if one is darker than the other after you rebuild and adjust each you may have to just make the brighter one darker to match the other.
Awesome! Thanks for advice. I actually do have the manual. It came with it, in great shape too. I found a board that converts CRG to VGA or component or even hdmi. It's just plug and play basically.
@@That_Handle I kept the screens in there. I couldn't find anything concrete on programming some LCDs so I didn't mess with it. Fixed the wood and cleaned the sticks and that took care of the drift. I didn't take that video, because someone saw it in my garage while he was in my neighbor visiting and said he wanted to buy it. So I sold it to him for $1200. That was about 6 years ago.
aw if you get the chance to find a real namco arcade gem that ive been searching for 15 years now its called GUNMEN WARS 1998 namco system 23 super.! its so rare it really deserves a review longplay of it :)
Great vid. I've just picked one of these machines up - a bit dirty but seems complete. It has the red beacon lights you mentioned - neither of which were working. I opened them up and it has just a mirror coated bulb inside - not spinning. I replaced the globes but they just come on constantly so a bit more work to track down why. As you say, I'd expect them to only come on when you're hit so it might be a relay problem. Quick question...what do you use to clean up the console plastic? Do you use a Novus polish to get it to shine like that ?
+soeberg64 Novus works great, but to be honest ours were already shiny :) Like you said there's a relay in the bottom to control the beacons, I'd track that down and see what's going on...
I had another look at the beacon and although mine only has a light bulb in it, it does appear to have plastic moulding that would support some sort of revolving mirror with a motor - creating a flashing effect like an old police light. Perhaps the Australian machines were made without this. Problem I have is that when I switch the machine on, the bulbs are on and stay on constantly. Kind of annoying and am trying to work out whether they should only light up when hit by the opposing player - does anyone know ?
That's Cyber Sled but it's not at the same time. The game I know was all black. Had a shrouded cabinet and the sticks were in the armrests of your pilot chair not in front of you.

Was it quite a modern take on Battlezone with a lot more things going on on screen and a lot of colors with maybe a bass Shaker in the seat? ... my local arcade might have had two of what you are describing linked together.
