The Platinum Game formula is fantastic, it works with so many different game styles and genres. Third person shooter, open world RPG, linear hallway hack and slash. But, live service RPG just doesn’t work at all.
Unfortunately they said they wanted to experiment more with this format. Initially that was what scalebound was supposed to be too. I’m starting to see why it was canceled.
@@vullord666 I watched an interview on Microsoft and the devs of Scalebound platinum games. It was because the American Microsoft company and the Japanese company kept budding heads and couldn't work well together. And Microsoft kept pushing platinum to try and release the game without fully testing and platinum was like yeah we xant do that there's bugs we have to fix. And Microsoft was saying just fix it after launch. Platinum was not having that and kept postponing everything to make sure the game was 100%. Platinum said they got the completed just needed more testing. Microsoft then pulled the plug because of the delays. The came was completed I hope someone out there have the finished game. I would love to try it out or just even watch someone play it. All of that money waisted so sad. Scalebound reminded me of my childhood favorite ps1 game called Legend of Dragoon.
Honestly I’d love to play a properly executed platinum game. The problem with Babylons fall is that it lacked the depth and complexity of platinum’s other games. Like imagine play a hack in slash with the depth of bayonetta with constant updates and new levels. It’d be amazing (if we’ll designed of course)

The painting astethic could have worked, if they made the design of everything around it. I mean, Killer is Dead came a long time ago yet the creators made sure everything followed the comic-shaded artstyle.
fun fact: guns and bows sharing a battle field isnt so odd! even as late as WW2 there was one well known case of a Scottish man who insisted on bringing his bow and sword to the battlefield (and wearing a kilt!). this was allowed because his skill with the bow as actually pretty outstanding and he was just as effective as his fellow soldiers! (there isnt much difference in RoF between a bolt action rifle and a bow and modern soldiers didnt wear armor so the arrow was perfectly capable of killing a man in one shot)

I don't understand how they could look at those textures and think "yep, that sure does look like an oil painting!" I mean ffs, Okami back on the PS2 figured out how to make a game look like an actual painting. It's even sadder when you remember that Clover went on to become Platinum.

The whole "The programmers chose to base the aesthetic on European Oil Paintings of Olde Times" thing? Did they look at any of the GOOD paintings? They do exist, you know.

I wanna say I like the idea of oil painting esque graphics
Probably just not for a 3d game
Dishonored 1 is an excellent example of that style and that came out like 10 yrs ago
it's like kev said, they went for oil painting look only on the worst part, the textures and 1 screen transition
it's not an art style when the style is put through a blender then a grinder
i think it would've been cool if they have simple texture (instead of fake brush stroke mush), oil painting and cel shading style for the shader and lighting (like you can see the brush strokes in shadows and darker areas)
the effects such as particles, smoke, etc go for the lower frame-rate feel, like the big boss dude with the muffled voice
his kick + cel-shaded-low-frame-rate-oil-painting-esque smoke to show the dust and dirt on the ground getting kicked
is it more effort? yeah cuz it's not a simple filter over every texture that they probably apply on the end of the artist's process
but hell, i've seen dota 2 with official custom shader that shows a better art style of what babylon fall tried (cel shaded heroes, black swirls in the fog of war and any screenshot would've look like a top-down rough-ish illustration of a Halloween-themed fairy tale and that's only a shader for a limited time game-mode)
for those curious, look up "dota 2 diretide shader effect 2020" plenty of screenshots and videos of it
