- The new color checkers are available at genevafineart.com/color-checkers
If you have a question for me, post it in the comments below. I'll answer as many as I can on next Thursday's episode. Here are links to each question answered in this video:
00:05 - how to use a color checker with a screen (like a computer monitor or tablet) and painting plein air, as well as an overview of the new Geneva Color Checker
12:57 - Do you have any tips for maintaining the exact same viewing position when painting objects such as glass with reflections and other colors that can change?
14:25 - Do you frame your work or leave it unframed, and in your experience does it make a difference in the selling price?
16:28 - In your video "How to Mix Colors" you talk about mixing "good steps". Do you stop making steps when you determine you have covered the full value range?
18:50 - What do you think about lead-based white paint like Cremnitz or flake white? I heard that lead paint is better for flesh tones because it's transparent.
21:09 - I know Geneva paint is already mixed with the correct amount of medium, but what would you suggest if I want to paint a thin under-layer?
22:41 - How do you feel about the word "talent? I prefer the word "skilled".
I'm an old guy, in my 70s. Cataract in one eye, yellow tint to everything, I estimate 3,000 kelvin. The other eye had a cataract operation, so everything looks as daylight, about 5,500 kelvin. If I don't like a color, I just switch eyes! I don't stand a chance, but I paint anyway!
I grew up without youtube. As a self taught artist I only had the public library and as a young kid Bob Ross. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience as a painter. It is remarkable to me having such resources to help expand ones painting skills! Much thanks! I pass your site along to anyone that has inquired about what I have been checking out in the web! Cheers!
InstaBlaster.
this man Hits the Nail on the HEAD when he says you got to paint , work at it....start over a million times over if need be. Painting and having passion for it is what will drive you to greatness...I love the things he says...so smart and so true. Its the People who do it THAT are doing it and learning what they need to be learning to get ahead.
Sir i cannot believe your wonderful content and oil course are free!!
Watching these videos is like listening to a podcast, but I love it!!
you do noy hold back your knowledge. Your videos are such a big help for a beginner like me, who is trying to learn from UA-cam videos.
I think what I enjoy most about your method Mark, is the great amount of scientific analysis and thinking that you used to devise it and make it practically flawless.
You produce great students because you give them the practical understanding of why things are done a particular way.
Glad you have expanded to Canada! Thanks for sharing so much of your hard-won knowledge. I have learned so much from your videos and it has made me enjoy the process more and helped me to "silence my inner critic"!
Thank you Mark for yet another information packed video - so simple and clearly explained 😍
Wow you share a lot of great information - answers I have been seeking!
Thanks Mark for creating another awesome, informational video!! I've just ordered my first set of Geneva paints.
You are the Best art Teacher ever. Just the way you explain things to us, I thank you so Very Much!
Hi Mr. Carder, thank you mery much for sharing you knowledge. Eduardo, from Colombia, S.A
I received my color checker and brush oil. I used the brush oil last night and this morning my brushes are nice and oiled up. I love it. This oil will save me so much time.
Mark- I just ordered your colour checker. Normally, I close my eyes just a few seconds in order to eliminate previous impressions of light on my retina. Since a lot can happen while holding each colour in memory until I have it mixed on the palette, it just makes sense. I also wish to thank you for offering such valuable videos to the arts community. May you have the best of health and happiness for 2021 and beyond.
You're a true genius Mark.
Your video's are a very great help. Thanks for that.
Thank you for sharing all of this great information. Thank you
I ordered your colour checker, dividers (and canvas toner) and am thrilled.
I was worried that with my arthritis it would be heavy but it only weighs 98 grams (3.5 oz)!!
Thanks, Mark for ALL the free tutorials you have been posting. You have saved me years of frustration.
Cheers, from Toronto ☮
As someone who had Rheumatoid Arthritis, when I started to follow an elimination diet, ( I eliminated all gluten, grains, vegetables and fruits) my arthritis went away. I eat meat (beef, pork, bison) fish (cod, salmon, shrimp, scallops) poultry, butter, lard & tallow, & Redmond’s real salt (it has minerals) . Sounds crazy I know, but whenever I start adding in stuff the inflammation & pain comes back.
Mark,
You are what I consider the ultimate capitalist. You give instructions on how to make the very product that you sell. Bravo, my friend, bravo. I will be making my own because I like to work with wood, but I would like to contribute to your work and art of sharing knowledge so I will be looking A.) at either buying your supplies, or B.) donating to you if you have a donation page. I work in automation electronics distribution and I think you have a great business model.
Regards,
Will
I agree with you and what I've seen I'm in awe of.. like wise'Bravo'
Nice vid. Another problem with monitors is the light used to light your easel and palette can hit the monitor and cause glare that way. Instead of the accurate color pic on your monitor, you'll get a milky, hazy version instead and it will show up in your painting as milky. To solve that, I make a flat cardboard "roof" for the top of my monitor. To test, I turn the monitor off and leave the easel light on. If the screen is completely black, you're good. Wave your hand over the edge of your roof and look for shadow and light on the monitor (light will show at bottom of monitor, if so). Adjust the "roof" to block out all the overhead light. Hope that helps.
Your videos are interesting. Thanks
Awesome. Thank you so much. little pricey, but great tool!
I LOVE the Brush Dip Mark sells and I also enjoy my brush stand.
Thanks a lot
You are great
I often join friends at a local art center for open studio painting time. At the end of the session the still life is dismantled so we each take photos of it to finish at home. I like to transfer the photo to my Kindle which I set in a bracket next to my easel. (an idea I got from Michael J, Smith's videos). The nice thing about this method is that you can enlarge areas of the photo for more detail. I find this a great aid in developing my paintings.
THANK YOU!
Brilliant.
Thank you sir
Good to know.
I want one !!!!
Hi Mark, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Perhaps you've already answered this, but what are your thoughts about color charts? Are they really useful or can I match my color by using just the color checker? Thanks
I like your color checker :) it looks cool, but i couldn't found it on color checker, will you please give a link to it?
Talent is the hidden practice to get skill.
Will the color checker work as well with acrylic paint? Looks incredible!
what about if light condition are different on the subject, which may be at a distance, and at your arm reach?
What is the advantage of using the color checker over another object, say, using a palette knife held at arms length? Thank you for your insight and for choosing to help so many others.
Outside of the convenient structure, I mean. To be more specific, is there an advantage to the circle around the paint holder? Is it meant to focus the eye? Is it harder for our eye to distinguish color differences when the field of color input is broadened without such a circle? I apologize if this has been answered before.
I know nothing of this but it seems to me that the circle isolates the colour in a particular section in the photo/setup you wish to replicate, so it's easier for the eye to focus on that particular point without colours surrounding it affecting your interpretation of the given colour since certain colours can change the appearance of other colours when placed next to one another.
Thank you Mark. Where can we see your work in ATX?
Thank you for answering my question! Have you heard of Arches oil paper? If so what is your opinion on using it as opposed to painting on wood or canvas?
Mary Draws No, I haven't heard of it.
Hi i hope you are well! How can i do an analogy in paint about photografy?
Is underpainting a necessary step in oil painting? I read that some old masters really emphasised on this when teaching their students and those who broke the rule would be fined.
Does the color checker work with all types of paint?
I always see videos on painting light complexion people and rarely dark complexion people. Do you use less white and more saturated colours when you paint very dark people
Difference between refined linseed oil, stand linseed oil, cold pressed linseed oil ?
Hi Mark, I have a question. I live in an apartment that has fairly low walls in the basement, and my set up means I have light coming from my right shoulder, what do you suggest? Thanks for reading.
Maybe this has been asked before but here I go:
What if the light that hits the part in the instrument where you put paint is different from the light that is hitting the model that is seen through the circle?
ok seems that 6:40 is the answer
You can even better it by having the long piece of metal holding the circle a flat metal and turn it 90° so that you would barley even see any metal holding the circle up or make it a transparent polyurethane plastic
When will color checkers be available at Geneva Fine Arts? Been sold out for a while.
Is it (color checker) available in Australia or on Amazon? Xllent invention Mark. Also many thanks for all your tutorials. Wainting for reply. Regards, Mohammed from India
I'm curious to know your thoughts about simply holding up a palette knife loaded with color, and using that as a color checker. I'm imagining you have experienced some sort of trouble with that..maybe the angle to the light source/canvas etc. I'd love to hear your response, thank you
1331Anders that's what I was taught to use in art school, I even took a plastic palette knife and spray painted it middle tone grey.
Hello,
How does the color checker work outdoor in plein air situations? I have done pastel outdoors and colors I view in
direct light (as opposed to in the shade) do NOT come out right when the painting is brought inside. Please advise.
Thanks for the videos. Very interesting stuff.
Oops, disregard the last question!! I wrote it as I watched the video and the answer to my question came up just
a moment after I posted my question. Thanks!
Sunset, Bright sky?? Can you put a big mirror behind you and use color checker in that?? Or take a picture?
when will you have more color checkers? thanks
Let me say that the idea of color checker is really old, a lot of painters used it, in different ways. Ruskin had a very interestin one. Great videos though, you re awsome!
Can you use Geneva paints for glazing? And would you use an additional medium to do so?
Michael Martonick See: forum.drawmixpaint.com/discussion/3695/extending-geneva-with-liquin-impasto-medium/p1
I know a lot of people on the forum do glazing and also many of them use Geneva paint, so if you have any questions about it that you can't find answers to there, I would make a new post asking for advice.
Hi Mark, Nice job with your video this week and the new color checker. When will you have the new brush holder for sale? I would like to buy both in the near future. -Len
lenscriv Not sure yet, we have a lot we're working on all the time, but hopefully soon.
But what are the measures of the "color checker"?
Aww seems the color checker is not available anymore :(
Please help i cant match colors on my laptop i did everthing you said but non of this worked
What is the distance between the Ring and the paint is put on the color checker?
It takes a special kind of person to do this kind of work. Not many are cut out for it. We need farmers, can’t eat a painting of a bowl of fruit for instance.
Customers who do not live near me ask me to paint portraits from photographs (pets and people). I have been struggling big time using photos as references. I first try to adjust them in photoshop (contrast and temperature) but that ends up not helping that much. I guess the only way for me to get "better" and more "efficient" at using photographs as references is to paint more from life then apply what I learn. In other words use the photograph for the drawing and blocking in steps then rely on my knowledge when it comes to colors. Would you say that is true - or is there something else you can share? Thank you big time! I find the same issues with landscapes etc.
how can i buy a color checker and have it shipped to Canada
hi i m a French painter and a painting teacher . your color checker is an amazing idea. but when could you sell it in foreign country ?
or may be could you sell the plan to built it (by downloading) .
your Chanel is very great .
mogat jean-claude We will be selling internationally soon, we're working on it. In the mean time, if you want to make your own color checker, I have a video on that at drawmixpaint.com
Where's the link for the DIY video? I would love one of these, but $87 is a bit.
+Mark Carder will your colour checker be available in the UK soon?
I don't paint in the evenings , so instead I paint during day beside a window for natural light. I notice you paint mostly under artificial light. Why is that?? Are there specific light fixtures that you recomendend?
Do you have a video that explains fat over lean?
So if im not in the shadow of a tree but inside the house, painting whats outside (looking through the window), i have to go out to chek every time im making color.. is that right?
+Ignacio Herrera Looking forward the plen air colour chekcer video!
Have you tried water based oil paints? If so, how would you say they compare to traditional oils, for performance, permanence? Also, how does one contact you in regard to your art classes? Thank-you, Gloria
Have not tried them. Here is info on my classes: www.drawmixpaint.com/lessons/
What is your website to buy color checker product?
Hello master, how can i take lessons from you? Do you have online lessons? I would really love to do that please if you do let me know thank you 🙏🏻
I want a color checker how do I get it
I have someone from another state wanting to buy a painting I just finished. It was to soon to varnish and I lost the sale, she wanted it varnished, anyway around this?
Hi, thanks for your reply Are you talking about retouching varnish?.It works great, I love it. She wanted the high gloss Damar varnish. I guess that's permanent varnish.
+ANGELSLOVE Hello, Gamblin has a new varnish called Gamvar. You can get it in a gloss finish. It can be applied as soon as the painting is touch dry and the painting will continue to dry underneath. Gamsol gives uv protection as well. It isn't as hard as dammar varnish though and you have to be careful not to scrape or scratch it. I use it all the time as I need to ship my paintings within a week or two usually.
+Darlene Young oh thanks!!!!!!!! I will check that out today. :)
BTW your printable color wheels are seen on your website but are NOT orderable??
How do I purchase the new color checker
That color checker looks like a sculpture
Do you make water, miserable oils and if you don’t, why? MB
Hello I don’t suppose you have a value checker?
when will you be having more color checkers?
Within days :-)
I love it when I held it and see how it's going to help train my eye. I love the brush oil. LOVE it!
can color checker be used with acrylics?
Do still sell color checkers?
Something strange is happening on my last 3 paintings. The varnish i applied does not dry! It stays extremely tacky. The paint was dry before i applied the varnish. After over a month, it has stayed tacky what is happening?
thanks
John
john hunter What kind of varnish are you using? And what kind of paint?
Hi Mark!
The varnish i use is winsor newton oil color dammar varnish. The paint i use is Georgian oil paints which i have been using for years. I use gamblin refined linseed oil as a medium. Last week i did brush a thin layer of varnish on the top edge of an old painting which has the same varnish on it which dried quickly. The coat i put one the edge last week is still very tacky, and is not drying. The only difference is that the varnish use to come in a glass container and the new varnish comes in plastic containers. Maybe its the plastic leeching into the varnish. All the art stores around me don't have any varnishes or solvent in glass. I have never had this problem in the past using these material???
Thanks for the reply. I think you are the best out there
John Hunter
Are the color-checkers currently available? as of 10-24-16?
We have sent more to our fulfillment company. They should availible again in the next few days. Thanks for asking.
Many thanks - I will watch for it.

Do you know how Sargent managed to work on such huge paintings? Just curious if he measured and stretched the linens/canvases in frames first and I'm assuming he leaned it on a wall to paint? What kind of an easel would've supported his typical 87 by 55 inch paintings back in the era? Can you talk a little bit about artists from his era about their preparations/methods. Did they varnish stuff or were they preserved later by curators/museums etc. thanks
I would suggest you Google about Sargent. Or go to your local library. And check out his watercolours right here on UA-cam! Then visit your local art museum it is amazing to see real paintings up close! Don't forget your sketch book!
I would happily pay 87 bucks if you could stock these again
It is wrong what you told about the light on the colour checker at 6:40.
If you paint a picture of a lawn with shadowy and very light parts you can't have the same light on your checker as the original is - and honestly you don't want to.
The light condition of your colour checker has to be the same light condition where the future picture is viewed. That is most often a medium light or shadow but almost never in bright sunlight.
Damn-near $100, lol.
Mark, I have no doubt that God blessed me with a talent for drawing and painting. However, it needs to be nourished by good teachers (like you!). Skill has to be developed. You're not born skilled. I agree that anyone can learn to draw and paint. I use to get that, "I can't even draw a stick figure." a lot too. I'd tell them I could teach them. But I could sense that the interest just wasn't there. You have to WANT to.
Talk less, stick to point
(Goes on site to check price)speechless 69$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$+shipping!!!!!!(nosebleed)I live in the Philippines!!!!!!!and it’s me b day almost do you have a discount?!?!?
