  • Today, a review of a new Prototype by Kizer Cutlery, the "Uprising" by Kim Ning. According to Kizer, this knife will launch in January 2017 with a street price of $175. Not bad at all!
    It's got an interesting design and it's a well-built knife, with good materials and nice construction, and the price puts it in "pretty good value" territory, but unfortunately, it's got some serious ergonomic issues, which mean it's as bad to my hand as it is good to my eye. So, it's a knife that you'll probably have to mod to love.

    Wrong on Kizer's warranty. In spite of what's printed. You should really check with them first. If you take a Kizer knife apart and break something or strip the threads on the screws that is not covered by the warranty. And then they will only charge you to replace the damaged parts. I'm a Kizer dealer and an Authorized Kizer repairer. So I know. The few Kizers we've had to repair were actually done free of charge and one was a straight swap for a new knife. Kizer go out of their way to make their customers happy if there is a problem.

    I would have assumed the "very best example" thing as well if we hadn't received a dud (wet noodle detent) direct from the factory. But as you mention, to Kizer's credit they really do seem interested in continued improvement.

      My sheepdog abd Begleiter are wonderful detents. Maybe I was just lucky? The Pinkerton knife I have the light warncliff looking defense knife (cant remember name) had a lousy detent. truly ghastly.

      MOST of ours have been good, I wanna say 2 bad detents and one broken clip, 25-30 some knives. The broken clip thing we can't for sure say was an issue from Kizer though

    +Nick Shabazz This reminds me of a Hinderer-inspired design from ZT. I agree that at $175, it's not bad, but for just about $25+ more, you can get an actual hinderer knife design made in the USA, with excellent fit and finish in it's class--not to mention some very nice action. So if given the choice, I would go for a ZT over this particular Kizer.

    I saw it.
    I paused it.
    Do I hate it?
    Or love it?
    Hate it?
    Love it?
    It takes a minute.
    It really is quite beautiful to me. A lot going on but if you don't look at any of it and look at ALL of it, it flows quite organically.
    Similarly to a Lamborghini in a way.
    Strange individual angles form a nice flow as a whole.
    Okay, I love it for sure.
    It would go well in a small collection of contrasting pieces.
    I would have to have a contoured piece as well.
    I do have the Intrepid but the blade shapes are too similar to justify buying this as well.
    Did I talk myself out of it? We'll see.

    I thought you were very fair to that knife in the review. I'm still having problems pulling the trigger on a Kizer. I like the overall look of the Gemini, but I think you said it had pivot screw issues and a clip problem. They come close, but no cigar.

    How do you guys rotate your knives? I'm a beginner, I started with a shitty $40 Gerber knife that I'm starting to hate. It can't hold an edge. I shouldn't blame it cuz I have a crappy sharpener. I bought a Boker Patriot last Friday I can't wait for that. I'm digging the Spyderco's too. How do you rotate your knives?

      I don't think so luv them knifes did review on it. It has weird wheel by the frame lock. You have to spin little wheel to unlock to move lock bar..

    • @MrGeerbear
      @MrGeerbear 7 років тому

      No, it's not the Daboia which Kevin John sells as the Venom II (they now come in M390). It's a new knife and CKF sells it as the New Concept also. It even has the KJ branding on it (which is hideous). The Kevin John knives have great detents and actions on double row caged ceramic bearings. My New Concept came with the wheel locking mechanism off and horrible centering and with proprietary hardware, not an easy fix. I really like the Venom II and Venom Attacker (CF in the blade), but buying from aliexpress can be a crapshoot at times. They are well made with great fit and finish. Kevin John makes the parts for CKF and they assemble them in Russia with better QC.

    • @subroc4
      @subroc4 7 років тому

      I mentioned it in the disassembly video, but to me it looks like a more angular version of the Olamic Wayfarer 247. They even got the hollowed out flipper, except here it's a square instead of a triangle. What do you think?

    • @alittleolder
      @alittleolder 7 років тому

      It's usually not like Kizer to copy designs but it sure has way too many similarities to the Wayfaarer.

    • @hellcatdave1
      @hellcatdave1 7 років тому

      It's not a copy. Similar? Yes. But you could also compare the Wayfarer to another knife and say the same thing.

    • @alittleolder
      @alittleolder 7 років тому

      It comes close but is different yes. Like I said, that's very unusual for Kizer. They usually do there own stuff and you won't find anything similar.

      I don't think Birdshot was talking about this knife with that detent. But makes sense!

    • @MrGeerbear
      @MrGeerbear 7 років тому

      Nick-Yeah, the timing is not right. Most of my Kizers are earlier models and the weak detents soured me on the company. The good thing about Kizer is they seem nimble on their feet and listen. I, like you, don't like that ZT and others number their knives. Unimaginative and hard to remember. Kizer went away from that and their screwy proprietary pivots. Good to hear the detents improved because they have one coming out that I really want.

    If it's not a problem for you then why did you point out the "Made in china" issue in "the bad" section?

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  7 років тому +1

      +alittleolder Because its huge for some folks, and I don't want my comments filled with a million xenophobes accusing me of hiding that.

    • @alittleolder
      @alittleolder 7 років тому

      Yeah but mentioning it under "bad" .. well I don't know.. Last year I bought about 15 US Made knives and about 7 chinese made Knives.. Some (from both countries) with Austrian steel, so I even supported my own country. If the quality is ok you should really not be concerned where it's coming from unless slave labor is used but I know from folks that especially in factories like those of Kizer, Reate and WE (just a few examples) folks are really breaking their necks to get a job there because they are paid well (for chinese standards) and it's pleasant to work. No Foxconn standards there. Don't wanna know how nice a workplace is in a factory where they make $7 knives. Also all of the High End chinese Makers buy most of their steel in the US. So it's good for everyone. Also the dealer makes some money too. But it's pointless to discuss as you will never get your point across without losing a bunch of people on the way to the conclusion.

      seems like you said a word while coughing. luckily I didn't hear it .. lol.. but yes.. you're right.. and even the most patriotic of people have (by now) acknowledged that good stuff is coming out of china. Also I think they use an Iphone or some other phone made in china, and of course all consumer electronics are made there... so that's not a problem? Only knives are?

    • @subroc4
      @subroc4 7 років тому

      I think part of it is Americans wanting to support American jobs, which I can sort of understand. But then again, a lot of these people don't have problems with Russian or Italian knives, just Chinese, so I dunno. I don't understand it either.
