    One of the reasons I love Garrett is because even though he's sassy and is quick to tell us all the things we should NOT do, he does understand that some of those concepts are things people like, so he gives suggestions on how to do them WELL. Garrett can be a stickler when it comes to gray, which is my favorite color. But he talks about how to make it work without the space being overtaken, drab and depressing. He's supportive of the fact that while it may not be his style, whatever your thing is that it is achievable if done right. I don't like when designers just tell you what never to do even if it's something you like, that's not helpful. Tell me how to do it and make it look fantastic if that's my vibe.

    From the minute they came out. I have absolutely hated the gray floors. And the funny thing is, every single person. I know that put in gray flowers. Also hate them now. I don’t have a problem with gray paint, I painted the outside of my house, grayish color. But gray floors just Are an instant turn off for me.
    I have vinyl plank flooring, I could not afford real wood, in a medium to light brown tone. And I have bright colors painted on all my walls. But it looks OK. Well to me anyway :-) it would look terrible with gray floors.

    • @kc9scott
      @kc9scott Місяць тому +2

      @@serenajarvis3548 Traditionally (i.e. mid-century for me), a soffit is a boxed-in section near the ceiling, generally made of the same material as the walls/ceiling, such as drywall, and painted/wallpapered to match the walls/ceiling. The overall effect is that the ceiling just happens to be lower where the cabinets are, by whatever amount is needed to match the top-of-cabinet height. In recent times on YT videos, I hear of people making soffits styled to match the cabinets., with dummy doors that don't actually open or provide any storage.

How about a counter with the coffee bar? Too much?

    Garrett, thanks for your gentle approach! Yes, beautiful design is what it is all about. Also, about the kitchen cabinet space not reaching the ceiling - not elevating the space. My mom, age 93 and a stubborn German, was trying to climb up to dust the top of the cabinet - very dangerous for her! Every time I visit mom, I climb up on the counters to dust to top of her cabinets so as to spare her but at age 67, I am not so confident of my own abilities. So, my point is, the cabinetry not reaching the ceiling has fundamental, pragmatic dimensions = good design equals practical design = easy cleaning = aging in place.

    The reason why some people extend the tile past the cabinets is because they have an outlet or light switch right on the edge as that first kitchen did. That’s just poor planning because you should actually move the light switch first before tiling so you can end your backsplash properly with your cabinets and even trim it out beautifully. It requires hiring an electrician but it’s worth the extra cost to not have weird tile hanging out in no man’s land.

      Absolutely not unless it is perhaps a high end stone, but even then the wood flooring sealed is still better than the transition you advocate. Garrett, I love your practical tips, you are really easy to listen to. Good bones....I am panicking in my renovation....I got some aged limestone (beige/brown, a bit variable - running bond) for my kitchen and dining room (it's a European cottage in Europe...can't put wood down and don't like fake stuff.... The limestone is classic but it will look rustic, especially with a stove going and I'm now wondering if I should have got crema marfil marble to give more 'luxury' in the space rather than taking it back in time....but I thought it might be too much for a darkish cottage. But I love the marble itself. I have 4 teens, husband, dog. I am not so keen on very minimal modern, I like luxury with a bit of magic going on say in lighting.
    Do you have tips on how much the character of original home should dictate ,'luxury'? I feel like I'm a marble lover but that my home may be the wrong place for it!!! It's quite small and on the darker side ..
    I could put the aged limestone on outside instead (I have a patio for same m2).
    My daughter likes the limestone.....

    Grey, grey, grey, don't get me started, because it doesn't deserve as much as this sentence. First kitchen, the back splash end problem. There is a chair rail, why not turn the rail to run up the wall to the top molding of the cabinets. I do not like chair rails, but I hate when tile just ends. That's why God made bullnose for. Orange? I thought well at lest the owners aren't color blind, since everything is grey. Then I thought they were and the painter was just having fun with them and told them it was grey. Leafy kitchen, Missing furniture? Yes. Missing leaves? One can only hope. Tan leaves on a pale pink (Barbie please no) wall. A BIG piece of art and a side board/cabinet under it. This should be two rooms. The space above the cabinets wouldn't be so bad if there was a wall there. There needs to be division! Don't like pink, but at lest I suppose it's a color. Putty is the new white, baige is the new putty, grey is the new beige. Neutrals are the opium of masses.
