That was some excellent tenor work. I used to play tenor sax many years ago through my freshman year of high school, and I know for a fact it is very difficult to play with that type of range and control well. Very nice performance.
Effortless playing with a sublime sound. One of my desert island tracks that I could listen to time and time again. And do so without being on a desert Island.
This interpretation of one of Bill Holman's great arrangements must be hard to beat. Each time I listen to it the better it sounds. This is an orchestra.
This is the essence of perfection. Great arrangement on a gorgeous composition, and amazing feel that the ensemble has, and Brian's interpretation, WOW! I couldn't find enough good to describe his mastery on this. So emotional, with such feel and understanding...incredible low register, and all up and down on the beautiful Selmer.
It's wonderful to know that jazz is loved and respected by up and coming generations. Arrangements with style and panache are alive and well and brimming with hope for the future.
Wonderful- great balance and feel from everyone, but yeah, the sax player certainly plays with great expression, and his tone is just enviable-- thanks for posting.
Brain indeed a beautiful solo I have to play this twenty times a day just because it just the best ensemble piece keep up the good work look out for Allen he's headed you way.
This has been one of my favorite "Kenton band/Holman" arrangements since I was a high school student in the fifties. I believe Bill Perkins did that first tenor solo/part. These guys made chills go all over me. Such memories.... Gives me hope. Keep it up.
Wow, that is Brecker caliber tone and improv at the cadenza! Yet, there's so much originality here. I must say, Mr. Clancy, you have such a way with soloing. Thank you for this awesome recording!
He uses aVandoren V16 t75 maybe or similar . I used to have the T77 (discontinued pieces though). This guy has a beautiful tone because he spent the time and efforts to reach this level. No secrets...The Mark IV is also bringing out the fullness of this beautiful melody
Nice playing the Saxophonist. Before I heard this version my favourite rendering of this arrangement was on a Kenton recording, which has stood the ages.
@GMak79051 Thanks for listening. We read all of the comments and appreciate everybody who is listening and making comments. We're limited on how much feedback we can send by the need to do things like teach classes and rehearse ensembles. Our UA-cam viewers and listeners are very important to us. Stay tuned for news about our online store, which is being tested now. You will be able to order CDs and buy downloads.
Brian replies: "In that video I was playing on a Vandoren V16 (metal) size T45. I cannot remember what reeds I was using, though. I actually did not stay on that setup too much longer after the recording session. I am back playing on a metal Otto Link."
Hey, Bret: always something worth hearing. This is an excellent band through and through - individual players, togetherness, sound, arrangement. And, yes, they deserve recognition! Congrats, once again, for the splendid work you have been doing.
@OTKUGO: Thanks so much, and I agree! These students re at a professional level and are a true inspiration to work with. This arrangement is the classic that Bill Holman wrote for the Stan Kenton project "Contemporary Concepts" the great album with Mel Lewis, et al.
From the video I noticed that the tips of the lead tenor's fingers weren't placed directly on the pearls, and they often reached over the pearls, particularly his middle finger on his right hand. Perhaps he wasn't pressing with the tips of his fingers. Just something I found interesting.
@bsolano94 This is John Murphy. I asked Brian Clancy, the tenor soloist on "Yesterdays". He replied: "Oleg brand. It is the standard strap; they also make one with a wider spread for the back of your neck. They make one that says it is a harness but it's not great quality."
This recording and performance is SONIC PERFECTION. I actually like it better than the original recording by Stan Kenton & Orchestra. Their version sounds jaded whereas this version sounds like it came from the heart.
We don't have any as videos on this channel, but the One O'Clock Lab Band has recorded several Thad Jones compositions. You can find out more in the discography linked at (UA-cam won't let me include a link) jazz dot unt dot edu slash discography.
I have the same question the guy below me does. I'm not one to believe mouthpieces change your sound all that much, but his tone is so beautiful and different that I would love it if someone could ask him what size and kind of reed and mouthpiece he uses. Thanks so much for this.
@kristianlambright: I suggest that you get in touch with Brian Clancy (the great soloist on this video) and ask him what he uses and if he has any tips on such a great sound. You can find him on Facebook. Best of luck, and I hope to hear you play some day! - Steve Wiest
@northtexasjazz Do you happen to know the mouthpiece and reed setup for Brian Clancy? He had an amazing tone and beautiful ideas that gracefully complimented the tune. I hope he does great things.
What a marvelous band ! beautiful music. All the musicians are great, and the sax solo is amazing ! I'm curious to know what kind of sax he plays on that video (even if I know the sound comes from the player). Congratulations to all the guys on that video !
Does the drummer have a banana with him whenever he goes in the studio cause I swear i've seen him on a different recording with a nanner on the stand.
My suggestions are to listen intensively to players whose sounds you like, to try out a variety of mouthpiece and reed setups, and to work with a teacher in your area whose sound you like.--John Murphy
Hi Im a sophomore in high school and I play Lead tenor sax in my jazz band and Im looking to improve my sound to sound like his. Any suggestions ? And Btw I have a selmer 80 series 2 super action . Thanks
Brian Clancy is based in LA. The students are doing a wide variety of things now. We regularly post news of alumni activities at facebook.com/northtexasjazz, facebook.com/theoneoclock, and jazz.unt.edu/
Sean, one of the bass trombones, and Dustin, the bari sax player are in the US Army Jazz Ambassadors (and sounding great there along with several other UNT alumni!). Steve Wiest is now in Denver. Several band members are in LA, NYC, doing tours, in the DFW area still, and teaching and going for higher degrees at institutions across the country. Sorry for not giving specifics, I get confused sometimes on who's where...too many high notes on the brain.
A Cloud sorry ,I don't understand what are you talking about. The,vandoren V16 metal mouthpiece have three different chamber size: small,,median and large .

Wonderful musician. Always just enough....never too much.
Unbeleavable, perfection in it's essence as stated already, and man, it is. Brian Clancy, chappeau!

Very nice Brian.
Great tenor solo--I think that's you, Brian!!! Beautiful!

North Texas Jazz thanks
Have you tried the Theo Wanna series of Mouthpieces - the Mantra would suit your style beautifully
I use my Vandoren V16 T75 to record...I play another mouthpiece to perform live (Otto Linkish)
Tiny tip opening, small chamber yet huge sound
Hey, Bret: always something worth hearing. This is an excellent band through and through - individual players, togetherness, sound, arrangement. And, yes, they deserve recognition! Congrats, once again, for the splendid work you have been doing.
Perfection never sounded so great!
How can someone dislike this or anything by one o'clock ? I don't understand ....
...love it!
Yes! Yes! Yes!

The intro with the heavy guitar riff has me jamming. If it's part of a longer piece, I'd love to know the name of it. Anyone know?

Selmer Mark 6
You're right ! He will sound the same on a Yamaha
Does the drummer have a banana with him whenever he goes in the studio cause I swear i've seen him on a different recording with a nanner on the stand.
Good sound !! I have a favorable impression on his attitude toward Tenor-Saxophone playing !!!
How does this shit not have more views?!

LET MY MAN COOK
Hi !!! What kind of chamber do you use in this video ?? median or large :D
Thanks a lot ~!!!
If they're using median you might have to do a little math.
A Cloud sorry ,I don't understand what are you talking about.
The,vandoren V16 metal mouthpiece have three different chamber size: small,,median and large .
A Cloud and the chamber of mouthpice will male the different tone and feeling .
It's an older v16 so it only came in a small chamber.
lol he didn't get the maths joke
Does anyone know what mouthpiece the tenor player has? I'm thinking it's a Vandoren but I may be wrong...
Alpha prelude Yes, indeed.I I was looking closer and Im pretty sure its aV16. Defenitly its a vandoren. I have one T75...buuuut, I may be wrong too :)
vandore v16
