really liking the more realxed vibe of your older videos, the new ones can sometimes be abit hectic and against the clock, but this is just alot more chilled out, which is nice.
Of course, Ben is a great chef and instructor, but Jamie's smile brightens my day. Thanks Jamie, I needed that today!
beautiful stuff, your best recipe yet, great job guys!
Just tried this with (milk poached) kippers as a replacement . Smoked haddock's hard to find in the States. For such an inexpensive dish,it's fantastic.
+exeuroweenie Smoked trout is good too and easy to find in the supermarket.
Thanks,I tried smoked trout a few days ago. It's much better than kippers-milder and less fishy.
aw man, I miss the old set. such a throwback tbh
Kedgeree is a great hang over breakfast as long as your up to making it!
Looks amazing!
I can't put my finger on why, but I actually do prefer the style of these older videos.
Awesome! You both rock!
i have never had basmati rice like a risotto! definitly on top of my must try list! i cant quite comprehend this actually!
Crazy to see hoe far the boys have come 🫡
quick, someone get me a drink! I'm dying of FIRST!
Sorted is first lol
I know Ben say's salted water, but it sounds like he's saying Sorted water like they have there own brand lol.
They look so good my favourite style of potatoes! Yum! Kate :)
I have smokie every morning.
Hey Ben, if you stir that water vigorously before dropping the egg, the egg will kind of wrap up in itself while cooking and give you a much better looking end result. Nice dish though!
Also if you add vinegar to the water, it tightens up the outside of the egg to reduce the amount of egg white strands that flay out. It doesn't add a vinegary flavour either, from experience.
Awesome tips!
White vinegar please!!
Beautiful.
I LOVE kedgeree, but I've never done the fish in milk or used leek. I will definitely have to give this a go. Not sure about the peas, though.
I would love to see you guys try and make some Middle Eastern dishes! SORTED EATS THE MIDDLE EAST!!!
The baby faces are hilarious
Great recipe! Just thought I'd mention that Khichadi is an Indian dish along the same lines; It's made with lentils as opposed to seafood but the rice is cooked the same way (with stalk or water).
Sonali Manka Singh lol so was i. N yes love how Sorted made it. :)
How did Ben not burn the hell out of his fingers at 1:53? Are British pots made of some sort of magical metal that doesn't actually get hot?
No... Ben's just got magic fingers
I was actually very troubled by that.
Cause he's been a chef for quite a while you build up resistance to heat...my old food tech teacher could literally take a roasting dish out of an oven with her bare hand xD
So you like, cook your hands so much that they're just another part of the dish?
Victor Gnoato it's more like his tolerance to extreme temperature is much higher as a result of cooking so much. his pain threshold is higher than someone who hasn't spent so much time cooking.... so.... magical fingers.
It's really not easy to find smoked fish (or anything smoked really) and haddock where I live; can I use fresh fish (i.e. dory or seabass) instead? Thanks for the great recipe!
Yum!
One of my favourite meals. Yea, I'd rather this for breakfast than a fry up, but it's usually more work than I'm willing to put in. I do make it for a brunch when I can though. :)
I actually cracked up by "Wikipedia that stuff" part XDD
Did Ben shake the saucepan of simmering milk holding the metal saucepan itself? Special pan or special fingers?
Fun fact - Queen Victoria's favourite curry was a chicken curry served with pilaf :)
Is your whole kitchen from Ikea? I have the colander and the cheese grater you have used in other episodes.
Please do brazilian's baiao de dois. Its a really nice recipe :D
Try the Indian version with chopped up smoked bacon & a few franks. Crisp up half your bacon the rest add raw near the end. It totally transformed it imo.
Well I think I know what i'm having for dinner tonight!
i can't find smoked haddock, any switch up fish?
Like... in Stoke they eat oatcakes...influenced by Staffordshire soldiers who ate chapatis in india..cheese oatcakes are delicious
Jamie says,"This could almost challenge a fry up."
Twelve year old boy squeaks,"You reckon?!"
@JohnDesper He means people from India.
Ben's got a pair of heat resistant tongs for hands. Cheers mate.\/
What a dish to remind yourself of how the Great British Empire came to power through colonization. Glorious.
But in the end, their are more Kebab shops than Chip shops in London.
Who really won?
Please make something indian or some kind of food from afghanistan, love u guys (y) ♡♡
How did you do that with the eggs? I did exactly the same and mine just disintegrated in the pan and I was just left with the yoke.
You have to have High Quality Eggs for poached ones. Supermarket ones tend to do that. Xx ( disintegrate)
Looks lovely. I would leave the skin on though. :D

Man, I love Kedgeree. What other smoked fish would you recommend to use if Haddock isn't available? Would smoked mackerel work, or is it too oily?
I've used kippers. They're a lovely alternative :)
I usually make this with Salmon, after having cooked a side of salmon its great to use up what's left over
maea05 Yes I have too, and smoked mackerel.
Wash that leek wash the leek wash the leek aaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!
Your version of a Smoked haddock kedgeree that is!
What do you think Basmati rice has to do with risotto?
Kedgeree... it's called kitchidi in India :)
kitchidi is a different dish. This is a British dish.
The entire time I did not realize what was being cooked because I did not know what "Kedgeree" might have been, turns out it is what is pronounced in Bangla as "Kichuri" ahaha silly me :B
great dish will try it out with poached fish :D
PLEASE BRING DAN AND PHIL BACK?!?! XXXXX
You guys should go on Chopped.
jaime without a beard O_O
Someone forgot their clip-on mic.
For anyone who has tried this yet....how strong is the curry flavor in this dish? (not a curry flavor fan)
"Fish it out" HAHAHAHAHAHA
Just noticed I've got those knives :D
Great recipe guys. Just one suggestion about the video: The red tones seem off. It seems like the colors are too red and saturated.
This is inspired from the original (vegan) Indian dish 'Khichdi' - made with lentils, rice, turmeric and other spices. We eat it for lunch too. Rarely breakfast.
The oldest recipe for kedgeree is from 18th Century Scotland and while the spicing definitely hails from India (India was pretty-much a Scottish colony) this is nothing like Khichdi.
And the oldest recipe for Haggis is from England What's your point?@@Alan_Mac
@@PaulHigham666 My point was so simple that anyone with an IQ above 50 would get it. That clearly excludes you.
Jamie sounds like Wheatley hahaha
I made this in school
geek...
super geek...
Who washes the dishes?
It's "curry-inspired rice dish" .... (compound adjectives are hyphenated). For those of us not in the UK, perhaps one day you can do a short segment on curry powders. I'm always confused by them. Hot? Mild? Should one spice/ingredient be more pronounced than others?
Any other fish I could use with this? :)
Kippers :)
My english Gran used to use a nice piece of poached cod and she scrambled the eggs, lots of butter, pepper and salt mixed with leftover rice, Great breakfast!
if you can't get any smoked fish could you just use regular fish for this? Or does anyone know how to smoke fish?
+aquanette123 Any smoked white fish ideally. Kippers works too.
spuddy345 okay thanks :) I want to make this so badly but my town doesn't sell smoked haddock and I don't have a fish smoker
+aquanette123 Can you get smoked trout in the supermarket? If not google smoking fish, its actually really easy to do.
TheScouseassassin i don't know about trout, the big ones around me are smoked salmon and white fish. I'll see if any of the stores have trout though and then I'll look it up
Well here in the UK the stores stock peppered trout fillets in vacuum pack or adding to salads etc. I usually order my smoked fish online.
Do ice bucket challenge
considering the Indian inspiration, what if you use coconut milk instead of regular milk?
You'd be called a heretic and cast in to the forest
sounds lovely! I'll try that :)
I suppose it'd work, but I don't know if it could split when boiled.
it won't split with just fish in it... and if you add the lemon last after its cooled it'll turn out perfect. - speaking from mallu experience ;p :D
soldierside365 REALLY?? that sounds interesting! ¬¬
Your lives aren't bad at all, are they? All the tasting.
That runny egg yolk
Hi Ben! Growing up I was always told not to combine seafood with dairy (especially milk) Any thoughts on that?
That's actually a myth. If it does make someone sick then either they are allergic to seafood, lactose intolerant, or just ate spoiled food.
My mum cooks salmon with milk and we love it
I was told that too when I was growing up. Are you Muslim by the way? Because I think it's a religious thing. My family is Greek Orthodox Christian and I think that this belief is common among Muslims, Jews and some Christian groups. It actually comes from religious laws that prohibit the consumption of land animal products and sea/water animal products. I can't really remember where I read this. And yes, even though I know it won't really make me sick, seeing the fish in milk still makes me a little bit queasy... :-S
babablacksheepdog I don't know about Muslims but combining seafood (fish) and dairy is kosher, just not meat and dairy products.
But how could you make or enjoy Lobster bisque, clam chowder, any chowders?
is chicken a good sub to fish?
my wife won't touch fish..
Not for this dish, The meat needs to be of a flakey consistency. Chicken and rice with vegetables and egg poured over top and cooked is a chicken Frittata. Really good your wife should try it.
I think "Kedgeree" is pronounced khichuri (khee-chu-ri)..people still do have it as breakfast but not regularly.
khichuri is a different dish. The first recorded recipe for Kedgeree is from Scotland in 1790.
Make chilaquiles
i challenge sorted to the ice bucket challenge
And then I challenge then to the Ice Cream bucket challenge!
That poached egg's surely sexy
I want mine like that
just a fucked up looking dish haha. Just made it and it with cod and it rocks!
Is Ben saying *Salted* boiling water or is he trying to be funny/clever by saying *Sorted* boiling water? He's probably saying salted but I'm not sure...Isn't it kinda his thing to have a "special" kind of humor.
nice recipe! , the dude in the red shirt annoys me a bit...spending most of the video staring into the camera, like its all about him. In fact not even sure why he is in the video, the chef is the main man and does a good job
that's khichuri....
the fucked up version
Really stupid question: If this dish is from India, where did the Indians get smoked haddock? Haddock isn't native to Indian waters, and Indians don't smoke fish.
It's not "curry inspired", it's based on an Indian dish called "khichri" which is not a curry. Indian food is not all curry.
I thought Ben was supposed to be a "super geek", why does he refer to Native Americans as Indians?
This one's definitely an Indian influence rather than a Native American - curry powder and basmati rice aren't things I think you used to typically find in colonial North America ;)
Yeah, he's talking about people from India, that big country in Asia
He's not referring to Native Americans at all.
He kept referring to colonization, and the colonization of America is by a lot, more "profound" than India, so I thought that he was talking about Native Americans, I didn't know where curry came from, or "basmati". Sorry (not sarcastic).
John Desper
Yeah, the Brits had alot of colonies back in the day. America was just one of them.
Colonial invaders...I think
Suck it up. We won. We were the victors.
Now we’re not.
What goes around…
Its pronounced Khi-chu-ri. There are no hedges in the word.
Wrong. It's a British dish and it is called Kedgeree.
Poached egg on kedgeree? Needs to go on the pretentious list.
Very bad actually im expecting more from you chef
should he really be saying a colonial dish? I'm not British so I don't know but is the word "colonial" considered a sensitive thing to say?
Colonial simply means that it came from one of the colonies that Britain had established in India. Its hardly offensive, and merely a fact of history.
I'd say it's more a reference to the time when the British empire still ruled.
Why the hell would it be sensitive?
from what I know, kedgeree was brought over to England when soldiers returned from the colonies because they missed the taste of India.
@@LysanDharker Partly true. Obviously smoked haddock isn't available in India so this dish was developed 'over here'.
fish with milk?! ugh. sounds gross for my personal taste.
milk is sweet and mixed with the strong smoked fish flavour.
ugh ugh ugh.
havent you ever had poached kippers?
It's not a British dish
Nope not even close to a Kedgeree
Looks amazing!
