My wife and I were blessed to have spent a night inside Mont St-Michel. We have never known such peace and serenity both viewing the sunset and sun rise from our little balcony while the bells rang and the constant chirp of birds filling each tree. I love to visit my video in which I kept the camera recording during these times and when I need peace these days, I play that recording and it soothes my soul. Thanks for reminding me. Time to put that video on so I can remember the love we shared there before she died of cancer. Not surprising, my wife's name was Michele.
This is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your memory with your wife. My dad and I visited in 2014 and also stayed one night. I wish I could recall the name of the place we stayed and had dinner that night (a galette and calvados). I think about that trip often. And so much now because my dad passed away 6 months ago and I feel nostalgic missing him. It was the most magical and serene place I think I may have ever been. Especially the church and monastery. I too think of the bells and the sunset view and early morning tide. If anyone is reading this and debating spending a night there do it. Life changing. The tourists all leave and you have all of Mont St Michele to yourself. ✨
I was privileged to visit Mont St-Michel when I was a sophomore in high school, 40 years ago this spring!! It's still as thought-inspiring, beautiful, and spiritual as I remember. I purchased a gargoyle from one of the shops and still have it. I've displayed that thing in every place I've lived and I've moved at least 12 times in 40 years. Thank you for bringing this memory to life for me once again.
I too was privileged. I went there in 2013 with my brother and our high school French class in the summer after my sophomore year. Over there I bought an animated comic book explaining the history of Mont St-Michael in French (thought it would be an amazing souvenir) At the time I only been in French class for one year and I couldn’t read or understand 90% of the book. Today I can read and understand it after reaching the C1 level of fluency in the French language. It took me 8 years but this place and the memories I made over there kept me motivated to learn French. I still dream of returning to France and Mt. Saint Michael one day
I forst visited France, including Mt. St. Michel, my senior year in high school. And then, I studied in Angers for a month, followed by a year in Paris at the Sorbonne, during my junior year in college. While studying in Angers, our international group of students made weekly excursions to various castles along the Loire, and also visited Mt. St. Michel and Mt. St. Malo. It's still the best, most beautiful year of my life. Unfortunately, nothing has really compared to the wonder and beauty of that year, but at least I've traveled to Europe multiple times thereafter, and hope to see more of the world before my ashes are scattered about it.
I did too, 3 week exchange. 1983 Blizzard snowed us in at JFK airport for 3 days; so it cut into our time in Brittany, but we were still able to spend the entire day here. Favorite memory. Skip Paris, I say, lol this area is Beautiful
This looks like a magic city that disappears and reappears when it's time. Right out of a Studio Ghibli movie. Surreal and just beautiful. I hope I get to see this some day.
1:48 when heard this beat this just started going off in my head: There once was a ship that put to sea The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea The winds blew up, her bow dipped down Oh blow, my bully boys, blow Soon may the Wellerman come To bring us sugar and tea and rum One day, when the tonguing is done We'll take our leave and go
I’ve never been there.. it looks absolutely a beautiful and spiritual place ´ I wish I could visit one day . Thanks for this beautiful informative video ♥️🙏
I will be in France for 7 months starting in October (in Normandy too! so I will be close by) and I will definitely be going here at some point! It is so beautiful!
think about how hard this place would've been to raid not only would it be near impossible to get any sort of siege equipment across those mud flats especially with the tide being a constant threat but even if you did manage to get in you have to go through a long tedious gauntlet that you'd have to climb in a full set of army while fighting off defenders you'd probably be so exhausted by the time you reached the top that all someone would have to do is push you backwards down the stairs
Good job, Rick! and you covered it well. I know time is limiting, so I'm adding the Bayeux Tapestry scenes 16 and 17. I've visited it and found some very quiet places...The trick get above the lower level, as you know. And some Bretons would say it's still part of Brittany, but it matters not, a lovely place. You did a wonderful job.
I once drove here (from London) by mistake. We literally stumbled across it. Pre internet days and bad map reading skills. Stayed the night. Amazing place. Loved driving around Europe.
I've always wanted to travel to Normandy; not least now. I found RickSteves through NormandyTourism's UA-cam channel and I'm eternally thankful for that. May I recommend coming to Chester, Cheshire in the United Kingdom?
Maybe somebody can help me with a memory from a visit to Le Mont St Michel. I was 17 and we went into a tiny building that had a shiny white round table. The guides spun the top of the table around so that it was constantly spinning, like a top or a merry-go-round. Suddenly, images of what was going on outside the little room were projected onto the table, like a periscope, but projected onto this spinning table top. Does anybody know anything about this?
I feel like a real idiot that I never heard of this or seen this place before and I'm a history major(junior). I need to go and it looks like Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings.
Im shook! This place looks like the Kingdom in lord of the rings!!! I never knew France had such hidden gems. I have find info on how this master piece was created.
Sorry but the audio for this video is phase reversed. It sounds really bad specially in MONO . If you need help with audio restauration I can help. Luis.
Unfortunately no volume, so couldn't hear anything on this video! Most of the Rick Steve's videos have very low volume which makes it hard to fully enjoy the programme! Otherwise, these videos are the best in travel videos! Rick is a learned, interesting narrator who brings the places to life. :)
I traveled here last Christmas (2012). I stayed with a family in Brittany and they will tell you day and night this is not part of Normandy, but part of Brittany. Every time I see a video saying it part of Normandy, I have to chuckle a bit. Just a little piece of local debate that isn't always talked about. Highly recommend visiting no matter which side you believe the Abby belongs to.
My dream is to be one of the Mounts 30-40 residents! Lol. I haven't even ever been there, so, a trip and a few nights stay would be a magnificent start! 😍

@@ericasuares2927 Yes, not all the poets in the world could describe the beauty and peace of soul of to be found at this blessed place.

I went one sunny December day and had the church all to myself. Marvellous acoustics!

I visited the castle in 1964 when I was in the Army. It was beautiful and I would love to see it again.
I was there once , as a tourist from Russia - it's a marvelous place, everybody should definitely visit it!!!
Advice for anyone wanting to visit: come during winter there will be far less people and you'll be able to enjoy it way more.
thanks
I love watching this clip! I went there in 2005 and it was absolutely amazing...
on my first trip to france, aged 13, i went here. loved it, really want to visit again.
This is such a beautiful place.

On a clear night, you have to see the illuminated cloister of the abbey; it looks like a ship floating in the sky. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you Mr Steves. I would have never found this beautiful architecture without you. I plan to see it myself soon!
I’ve never been there.. it looks absolutely a beautiful and spiritual place ´ I wish I could visit one day . Thanks for this beautiful informative video ♥️🙏

This video is really difficult to hear. The users should probably try uploading it again. I'd LOVE to watch it!
+Teresa G Hi, I had difficulties on my phone, but on the PC there is no difficulty.

Well, it was the actual inspiration for Minas Tirith from what I know :)
Research Mandela effect. it may explain why you had never heard of it before ;)
