You play this piece seriously like 20x better than any other recording of this solo I've heard anywhere else. This tape made me fall in love with the piece and I'm actually playing it tomorrow for a percussion competition. I've used this video as a reference on how it should be played, but I (and everyone else I've seen) can't get it to anywhere close to the level you played it at lol. Amazing piece and amazing playing.
That was amazing man. Gave me the chills a few times. I havent done a marimba piece in a while. I think this would be a good solo to help me get the feel back.
Tremendous playing Niki! What are you doing with your music now in 2019? Hope you're still playing. Very relaxed and mesmerizing style. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Jim, thanks for your comment! Not playing too much anymore, I'm making mostly electronic music now, got a new project going called Halflow, feel free to check it out 🙂
Niki Gehrer why would you want to tilt the mallets? Even if you stepped back you could still tilt your wrists anyways so why are you so close to the marimba?
Nom NomZ You obviously aren't listening hard enough. I used Steven's grip all throughout high school, and now that I'm at a university as a percussion performance major and am studying under the direction of Pius Cheung, I realize now that your grip does determine your tone quality. Cross grips are more natural and feel more like an extention of your arm, and as a result it's easier to produce the sound you're looking for.
that depends on the person. Not everyone agrees with it. I'm a music ed major at the University of North Texas and 99% of student s and faculty, such as Professor Mark Ford, uses stevens, and know one complains about the tone quality they produce with the stevens grip.
Many Marimbists don't use Stevens. Stevens is popular in the US, but many other countries use traditional cross or Burton instead. Also, Pius Chung, Nancy Zeltsman, Gordon Stout...all non Stevens. Moral of the story - every grip is viable. Sound quality comes from Mallet choice and how you play the instrument.

This will be a challenge to learn, but a welcome one indeed.
Can confirm that this was a challenge to learn, but I got into provincials for it!!
sans doute la plus belle interpretation de ce morceau merci
My favorite piece
I'm amazed at how today's educators of college curriculum focus on "buzz saw" rolls rather than relaxed roll patterns.
I thought i would never play this but now its awesome when im playing it every day llol
Beautifully played! Great work man.

Weird choice of mallets but still sounds so good. Or is it that they’re the same but different color?
Superb
What are your video camera and your microphone?
Your videos are brilliant!
Very sweet... I would like to add some percussions!

Megan Harris it’s linked in the bio

+Gandhi Satya I updated the description, hope this helps! :)

+Niki Gehrer thanks bro
Can I ask why do you have high wrists at the start? I’d suppose it’s to get a lighter sound for the rolls but as they crescendo it just sounds thin
How old are you?
到底誰能那麼快
我都不行
What mallets were you using?
One They Fear I used Erho
Be careful with the ending
Why do you have your arms so far back in the beginning? All you have to do is take a step back
It's about the tilt of the mallets so stepping back would not work i guess
Niki Gehrer why would you want to tilt the mallets? Even if you stepped back you could still tilt your wrists anyways so why are you so close to the marimba?
It’s to change the volume of the mallet rolls. It’s for dynamic effect
your burton grip is good but have you tried stevens? it may be better for a piece like this
Cross grip sounds better than Stevens... :)
Brandon Pressley sound is determined by Mallet choice, not a person's grip
