The first theme of the 2nd mouvement is very similar to the scherzo of Brahms 2nd violin sonata (1886). I wonder if Brahms had in mind the Grieg sonata when he wrote it, or if both have taken inspiration from a preexisting popular theme.
Aidan Daniels sure Aidan, gladly: Pause from the first bar into the second - the melody from F# to D continues. The pause disrupts this. First poco allegro: first two measures are played exactly the same way twice. I’ve truly never heard them sound more pointless. There are more examples, of course, but at the end of the day they’re all just opinions. I’m glad you (seemingly) enjoy the performance, and many others. I am just picky!

Brahms was good friends with Grieg. I think it was a homage to him
