    Don't mind me just making myself some notes:
    - separating broadcast domains - independent networks by grouping devices regardless of physical location
    - created at the switch
    Segmentation
    - connection to one switch means devices belong to one broadcast domain - where broadcast from one machine reaches all in that network.
    - Too many machines in one broadcast domain can cause congestion and thus performance issues and may have to be separated
    - Computers from different departments thereby different functions may have to be separated for security reasons
    - Instead of getting multiple switches for each network/broadcast domain and routers to connect them - hardware cost - one single switch can be used

    Hello Sunny.. Could you share me some information about why exists VLAN 1 and how it was created?. . I know in this vlan travels all kind of information data/video/voice, . That's the reason?. And The last question if 1 or more VLANs are Created into the switch why the rest of vlan are tagged and the vlan 1 not.. , I mean from vlan with number 2 to 4096
    on the switch are tagged and the information on the
    Vlan 1 is untagged if all of them are VLANs..

    When you segment using vlans do you still need to subnet the network for 2 vlans to communicate? How would the IP addressing work?

  • @filippomartinoli2122
    @filippomartinoli2122 5 років тому +1

    Good Morning,
    great video but I have any question:
    why for each vlan must correspond a different subnet? why I can't use the same network for divide in VLAN?
    If I just use different subnet, why I need to separate logical LAN in VLAN? the broadcast traffic is just separated with subnet and also segmentation.
    why is it not a redundant solution? is true that VLAN work at level 2 and subnet at level 3 but if I use subnet I reach the same goal. or not? please clarify my ideas with simply example.
    Thank you so much
    you are number one.

    • @sunnyclassroom24
      @sunnyclassroom24  5 років тому

      First, let's keep it simple. A subnet is a LAN, physical or virtual. VLAN is just like a physical network. VLAN is a LAN, layer 3 because almost all networks today use TCP/IP. The reason why we say VLAN is layer 2 because we can use layer-2 switch to create VLAN, but it doesn't mean it is a layer 2 network. Keep in mind, on a local area network (including vlan), all communications are local, but communications with other networks beyond are remote, which needs IP addresses.

      @@sunnyclassroom24 Ok, so in pratically if I configure this:
      Host1: 192.168.80.1/24 Host2: 192.168.80.2/24 in VLAN10
      Host4: 192.168.80.3/24 Host5: 192.168.80.4/24 in VLAN20
      Connected at the same switch L2
      what is the difference in having Host4 and Host5 in another network (192.168.83.1/24 and 192.168.83.2/24 in VLAN20)?
      why the goal is not the same? (however with 2 different VLAN the LAN is divided)

    VLANs do not group users, they group ports. VLANs can be based on other parameters beyond ports, like MAC addresses, but that is not common. VLANs are groups of ports.
    All traffic entering a port is considered part of, or on, the VLAN the port is assigned to.

  • @snakekidsnakekid637
    @snakekidsnakekid637 3 роки тому +1

    Hey Sunny! Does VLANs separate broadcast domains or networks? I'm confused here.. If we have 2 VLANs on one switch will the devices on the two VLANs be able to talk to each other if they just are talking normally (one to one). And will the VLAN only separate broadcast traffic?

    Please and thanks for your help. I am upgrading my church network and need your help. Current network was setup by someone else who is no longer available. We have 1 domain controller for the treasury dept. which is separated from the rest of the network with its own static ip address. 3 other static ip address for 3 other groups. Each group is on it's own router. I got rid of the static IP Addresses and replacing all network equipment with unifi. Including udm pro, 2 8 port switch and 16 port 2nd gen switch, 3 AP's for now. I will have about 4 vlans (possibly more). I want to maintain the DC with a static ip 192.168.31.3. and have it issue ip addresses to the treasury computers. I want to setup vlans on the udm pro and have it issue ip addresses. Reseach show that I should use dhcp relay on the udm pro for all equipment talk to each other. I would like to be able to share files and printer with some of the vlans. Please advise if how would I go about setting this up. What do I need to do on the DC running windows server 2012 and what do I need to do on the udm pro?

  • @Douglas_Gillette

    You are saying some inaccurate points in this video.
    VLANs do not ‘talk to each other’. Traffic can be forwarded from a source on one VLAN to a device on a different VLAN.
    Hosts or end stations talk to each other, VLANS do not talk to each other.
