- NEW VINTAGE FOOTAGE
In 1959, The Columbia record company hired two of the featured dancers from the Buddy Dean Show, Joan Darby and Joe Cash, to help promote the new album The Madison Time by the Ray Bryant Combo. The dancers were sent on a tour across the north east showcasing the steps that perfectly matched the calls in the hit tune The Madison Time (featuring DJ Eddie Morrison). During that period, Joan and Joe were also filmed dancing the entire choreography.
And finally after all those years, here is the film! And it’s likely the same footage I was fortunate enough to see back in 2005 for one quick viewing courtesy of Arlene Kozak, a key production manager of the Buddy Dean Show and Linda Snyder who played it on her VHS for me. The film became the basis of my knowledge of the Madison Time dance steps. Thus, when we recorded ourselves doing this line dance just weeks later in 2006 (Jennifer Comar and myself Paolo "Lindy" Lanna), we released it as a re-creative version publicly as part of The Definite Madison Instructional DVD set. • Madison Line Dance dem...
"This is indeed the film and this is epic news because the footage that has eluded me and other historians of The Madison Time for so many years is now here for all to see."

MORE HISTORY
This film clip was distributed around the country in 1959/1960 and used as a promotional for the Columbia Record company. It is still unclear whether Tela-Records Services, located in front of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, CA filmed Joan and Joe in their CA studio or just acquired it from Columbia Records to make it part of their Tela Record viewing machine collection. “Back then, for .10 or.25 cents, one could watch this dance clip along with a collection of popular musicians of the time” says the grandson of Bradley Kemp.
After having been stored for 60 years in the Tela-Records vaults, they have released this footage and we can now, courtesy of “Classic Music Videos & Pictures 1960s” / @classicmusicvideospic...

QUOTE from JOE CASH
"The black community came to us and taught us the dance," said Joe Cash, who later went on to breed thoroughbred horses at his Folly Quarter Stables in Howard County (Maryland).
I heard this song for the first time today. I recognized some of the dance moves by seeing my daddy dance . He was a good one....thanks for bringing back such sweet memories of my daddy that passed away a few years now. ❤
Thank you for sharing this!!!!! That is my grandmother, and I have never got to see her dance before she passed. You have no idea how much this means to me and my family! Thank you so much 🥹
Awesome!
Totally CLASSIC Old School Line Dancing‼️ The Madison was a dance my Aunt Marie, who lived in Baltimore, introduced to my parents in Philadelphia in the late 50s. As preteens, my friends and I quickly picked up on the dance and joined our parents and other adults on the floor; joyfully doing the Madison together‼️👏🏾👏🏾 I still love the moves and calls in the Ray Bryant song, “The Madison;” and I appreciate this video that helps me remember all the moves❣️Now that I’m blessed to be in my mid-70s, and still enjoy line dancing, I especially love hearing references in the song that only those of us “of a certain age” can relate to: e.g., the Birdland, Wilt Chamberlain, The Rifleman, Jackie Gleason, Cleveland Box, etc. 🙌🏽🙌🏽❤
Mom grew up in Philly in the 40s and 50s. Will have ask if she knows this dance.
Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been wanting to learn this dance since I first saw Hairspray back in 1988! Now I can! ❤️
Good luck!
oh i remember this in gmpym class after school .....about 14 kids doin it in unison it was so good even the principle was smiling the twist broke out in 62 great memories
I remember hearing this song in the series 11.22.63
Me too!
Great song, great dance and those kids did it perfectly! The guy was pretty cute too, and I love that narrow tie and Ivy League vest he's wearing!
Well, it’s not The Time Warp, but I was curious about this dance since Brad asked if any of the Transylvanians knew The Madison.
Rocky Horror Picture Show + Hairspray '88 = the crossover we all needed
Exactly. lol
Outstanding
The Time Warp 1962 style.
This is so kool. TY for sharing.
Impressive. Was the dance scene of "The Madison Time Dance" in the movie "Hairspray -1988" based on this?
It absolutely was!
Yes
This shows up in the documentary called The Twist.
Love it!
Sweet! ❤
Love.. Love.. can anyone say " Tracie "..❤️☺️
Tighten up volume 1
Certainly a lot cooler than the abomination that is The Macarena and other recent dance crazes.
Cha Cha slide is a plagiarism of this dance imo

Hairspray
Whitest thing I ever saw
Did you not see where it was stated that they learned it from the Black community. I used to do this dance with my mother when I was a little girl. By the way, I am Black.
@@54mensababe they may have learned it from the black community, but it’s an awfully white rendition
@@54mensababeABSOLUTELY ‼️The Madison was a big hit with my BLACK family and friends❣️(Please read my comments, recently posted!)
@@drwierdmy Black family and our Black friends did the Madison exactly the same way, with the same calls and steps. . .❗️🤭
Uhhhmmmm.... It turns out that Mr. Bryant and his combo were Black men.
Cheers
