never apologize for the quality content you offer on your channel.
19 minute videos mean nothing to those of us trying to learn from seasoned professionals and their experiences. I'll soak it up like a sponge everyday brother!
Damage Control Auto Detail Division real talk.
If AmmoNYC can make 20+ minute videos on cleaning pads, you can definitely make 19 minute reviews/comparisons. Love the content, keep up the great videos.
I listen to Scott and whatever says I do man
And I'll straight ring you out like a sponge CUZ
If you want to quiet down the Harbor Freight, take it apart, clean out the gunk they call grease, and put in some full synthetic grease. It’s night and day different.
I used to do that to my Makita in the 1980's...it was a screamer!
Thank you, Scott. for the Price of the Harbor freight, it makes it affordable for a beginner or a homeowner to take care of his car. keep up the great job.
when you see Price at $150 to $300
Great video. I'm currently just a closet detailer. I love keeping my personal cars looking awesome. My wife has a 2015 CLA250 and I have a 2016 C300 and it's therapy for me to keep them looking good. God bless. I'm getting the Harbor freight polisher.
Don't ever apologize for the length of your videos I learned so much it's like classes in session thank you for everything you do and you're teaching me
I bought 4 of these HF machines (why? just because) since I saw this video last month. I re-greased and turned the body so the switch is on top following a video here on youtube. I can only compare it to my PC 7424XP. HF definitely has more power and has less vibration in my opinion. I do have the Rupes lhr15es and GG G21 but those are different machines. My only regret is not seeing this video sooner when I was still in Virginia 3 months ago (moved to Hawaii on July 21st) where the Norfolk Harbor Freight was just a few miles from me. Nevertheless I bought 4 (I can throw it away if it breaks down) so I can save in the shipping, around $40 via FedEx second day delivery.
Thanks Scott!
How is HF shipping rates to Hawaii? and would it be worth it picking up tools from them instead of amazon? Thanks
I just bought a DA. I am in Canada so I couldn't order the HF one. The next cheapest one was like $250 which I probably would not have spent. But after searching I found one on ebay, for $40. It had only one standard pic, no description except it has a brushless 12A motor and will last a long time. I checked the manufacturer website, same pic and description, found one other listing, same, lol, but $110 or something. I thought wth, so I ordered it. It's a beast! Idk enough to compare it, but it is a very good quality tool, digital RPM readout,. I been using it on low to wet sand overspray off my doors, very smooth easy to use, awesome.
Brand is called MONSTER. No reviews on UA-cam yet. peace
I was about to buy the Griots Garage because I heard it was good for beginners. My dad showed me how much less that the HF was and I wasn’t sold. After watching this video, I’m sold. Going with the HF.
Great video! I have the Har.Freight...being a novice I Love it and glad to hear that u think it is a good tool...could not see paying 2 to 3 times as much for a big brand! I truly appreciate your videos. Thanks again Marty
Can you make a video on the new rebranded DA from Harbor Freight ?
I had this exact decision. Went with the griot's. Bought it for $130 shipped, tax included. The pad and aio were unexpected bonuses, sweetening the deal.
I figured by the time I bought the hf polisher, replaced the backing plate, changed the grease and bearings, the cost would be much closer than $50 vs $130.
I completely agree about having the pad stop spinning. Happens to me at least once per car, usually around the lower front and back portions.
I have Harbor Freight's Chicago Electric Platinum (w/ the Grey body).. 5.7 amp 2000 to 6400 OPM random orbital machine.. I've had this thing 6 years I believe and it still works great! I think I paid less than $50 ... it's like buying Nike when Asics actually feel better on your feet... but the world just has a certain view of you if you wear the Nike... I certainly understand why some people (especially professionals) would feel apprehensive about buying the Harbor Freight unit when someone may see that machine and think
"this guy's not a professional detailer.. his buffing/ polishing machine isn't $200"....Lol
Craig Cundiff I have the platinum too.. For the money it is an incredible machine, I put a 5" plate on it and tons of hours later it still works great and gives results comparable to machines 2 or 3x the price. Now I use it with a 3" plate and it is a powerhouse for ripping defects out of problem spots with that little pad. They seem almost fairly rare. Any idea what the differences are between it and the standard model?
I bought Bauer for $39.99 today and greased head adding my grease yet not removing their grease and it quieted the head down and lowered vibration making seem like an expensive one. 6" DA buffer/polisher
I didnt know HF sells dual action buffer!!! I deff will buy one this weekend! Thanks for the video!
You've earned my sub in 2 videos. I love how genuine you are, thank you for all you do.
Same here😂
"in the real world" and as a paint correction specialist as you said you don't just use a 5.5 and 6.5 inch pads. you use 3 inch/2inch pads to polish those curves and body lines. there's a reason companies sell those small pads and polisher for specific work
sure you can have other tools available with smaller pads for these areas..but in my opinion my harbor freight has enough power and without stalling where i can just get it with one machine and one pad...but yes i know some who will break out about 3 or 4 machines so they can do all the areas around the car..do what works best for you and your client:)
In the real world you have a race against the clock nobody uses 3/2” pads for a character line, that’s an overstatement
A thing to keep in mind: The price point might be your deciding factor, but what of longevity and life time warranty. You pay more up front but can expect factory attention following the guaranty period.
Finally someone that uses real world experience and not just marketing jargon from the manufacturer.
I have my share of overpriced DA and rotary polishers too bad HF doesn't ship to where I am :(
Where are you?
I'm in Canada, but HF doesn't ship to certain provinces for some strange reason.
Having it shipped to another province and them back to me would neglect any savings on a low cost machine.
Great comparison! I have the Griots for small basic jobs (it was my first DA) and a Rupes LHR21ES for my big jobs. There is definitely a BIG difference between the two!
However, the way I learned to know when the polisher pad wasn't spinning was by simply putting a line with a paint marker on the backing plates. When the line would slow down or stop moving I knew to back off the pressure a bit. It really helped me build up muscle memory. I went from being a weekend amateur to a weekend novice really quickly.
Not going to kill us with a 19 minute video so instead you kill us with a 14-minute video. LOL
It's a good video and good information.
Nicely done. I've had the Harbor Freight DA for several years. I recently bought the newer model that you have. I have been very pleased with the performance of this machine. Compared to a Porter Cable, the Harbor Freight machine has more power. For a DYIer only using a DA 2-3 times a year, I highly recommend it. I also have a Griot's 3" mini and that also works great in tight areas.
I can't begin to thank you for this video . I've been trying to decide which to buy and this video answered my questions.
Next time to try and get your point across about pad rotation, simply place a black line with a sharpie on the backing plate. Then it will be much easier for the untrained eye to tell if your pad is stalling or not by looking to see if the black line is spinning or just stationary.
good point...i haven't used a black line on the backing plate in years!...but you're right to help the untrained eye it could be a good idea
I'm learning from 0 and all the videos I seen of you are very helpful even if they are 30 min. long, you explain it in a very simple easy way to understand plus you don't go around the bush or b.s. to sell.. thank you
Me too
You’re videos are some of the most objective and informative videos on UA-cam. Very helpful. 👍🏻
Hi Scott, Love the videos for us amateurs. I’ve never seen you show us how you handle areas around mirrors, emblems, recessed door handles, etc with your DA. Do you apply compounds and sealants by hand in these areas? Do you tape them off to prevent scratching like I’ve seen Larry Kosilla do? Thanks, Bob from Kansas.
Got the Harbor Freight polisher.Waiting for the Lake Country backing plate to arrive, to start my journey to polishing my cars. Thanks Scott..you're the best!
I’m glad someone else feels like me. I went back to Rotary for this reason. And even more sad is that Griots which I own works better than my Rupes LHR15. Rupes is the worst! $450
Which griots do you have?
Hey Scott, I stumbled across a video yesterday where the guy opened up a brand new Harbor Freight DA polisher. Apparently the grease they put in there is pretty cheap stuff and it is not even in contact with the gears. He cleaned it all out and repacked it with more grease of a better quality. Unfortunately there's no before and after comparison in the video, but several people commented that they tried it and said is significantly reduced noise and smoothed out operation. I suspect this will also extend service life. Just a FYI in case you didn't already know this.
I guess Im old school but after 43 years of polishing Im still using the rotary for the bulk of my work.
Thanks for the conversation Scott. Just ordered a g6
Everybody got on my case when I used Harbor Freight sockets to dismantle and rebuild a 472 Caddy engine. That engine is still running strong 7 years later
I appreciate your videos. I just ordered the HF unit today since HF has the coupon for $25 off this month. It might not be the best but it should work well for my own cars, which includes an '18 Z06 with a ton of sharp edged body lines. Now I just need to buy some quality backing plates, pads etc...
The 19 minute video did not bother me when i get good info from it. Have you ever tried or tested the BUF503X - TORQ TORQX RANDOM ORBITAL POLISHER fro the Chemical Brothers? Stacked up against the two you used in this video could you rate it or you have never used one to say anything one way or the other?
Scott - since it's not possible for you to mention (on a 2 year old video, lol) there is othen 2 different models of the Harbor Freight 6" DA Polisher in the store. 69924 & 62862 If I didn't see another video about it, I could have bought the "wrong" one. The higher number one is much better build quality. There's another video on it if folks search. Huge difference? No, but enough that I am glad I knew to get the 69924 - BOTH were on the shelf, all mixed together like it was the same tool. It's absolutely NOT the same. Check it out guys.
I love the harbor freight DA best bang for the buck.
GWORKS ELITE AUTO FINISH....Waat up GWORKS!
I need one ASAP
love the HF on my Ram and the wife's car. like I commented before on the intro for the price + plate its results are wow. Scott to show the plate spinning on your videos do a noob trick and mark lines on it with a sharpie. I used them/still do I suppose to check I am not goofing.
I have both machines and i detail for profit. I agree 100% with your video and conclusion. Yes I changed the grease before ever starting it once and I moved the switch on top. I have the older model # 69924 from HF. There are 2 different model #'s and they're basically the same. Thanks for your time and expertise !
I have both as well and did the grease and switch mod on the HF, which made it pretty smooth/quiet. I upgraded to the GG for more power but man this thing is loud!! ear protection is mandatory and I feel like I need stronger than my 22NRR Shooting muffs.
Any idea about adding/ upgrading grease on the Griot's polisher to reduce the noise?
My friend your Channel is great thanks for non bias feedback !
Very honest video
A++++
I like your videos they help me A LOT of buffing my car
I think the small pad will work better with edges on your car
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I use the Harbor Freight, too. As a car wholesaler, it gets the job done, and puts extra money in my pocket. It works in my world.
Love the honest review. refreshing.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHY I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO TAKE OFF ANY PAINT. That is what professionals are for. if you want power, then as a professional you MOST LIKELY need a ROTARY polisher. Im not saying DA is only for dummies, but many manufacturers say this: ROTARY=Professional and DA=Beginners
breadfan9 I use a rotary all the time...
What should I call myself now:)
Exactly. Random Orbitals are a kids toy :) You got the big stuff
nice comparison ~ the 50 bucks Harbor Freight DA cheapie is ok by me, even with purchase of a higher quality backing plate for the pads ~
Thanks for the videos! This one has convinced me to pull the trigger on the Harbor Freight polisher instead of one of the much more expensive polishers I've been looking at. I have no intention of starting a detailing business... I'm just a weekend warrior who wants to polish some swirls/scratches out of my own vehicles right now (and hopefully rarely thereafter) and then maybe apply wax/sealant once or twice a year. I think this tool (with a better backing plate & pads) should work just fine for my world. ;-)
Scott - is there a limit to the number of times you can perform paint corrections on a vehicle before needing a new paint job?
Master the rotary. That is the best way to learn how to quickly correct. Then DA the wax/sealant. Tape off the edges is a given for rookie-semi pro's.
That's Chicago' electric model 62862 if I am not mistaken....they don't make it anymore!
Scott, is there a chart for compounds? As in Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound liquid is 2500 grit and Mother's mag wheel polish is say 2000 grit? Turtle Wax Polishing Compound is say 3000 grit? I've used these previous mentioned and guessed at the grit level. Your thoughts sir?
It looks like you have a smaller pad(5-in i think) on the DA polisher from Harbor Freight, so you can go easier on those curves with a 5-inch plate/pad than with the 6-inch plate/pad from the Griot's polisher. Its just physics...
yes you are correct..after 26 years of paint correction i understand that..but with that said the griots with a 6inch backing plate is a huge fail on curved panels and even placing a 5 inch backing plate it still stalls far more then the harbor freight dual action polisher..just a fact:)...it would be nice since griots sells the unit with a 6 inch backing plate and most will just use that plate and get poor results around curved panels that they would either increase power or sell it with a 5inch backing plate as well to give people more options and power when needed or at least tell the buying public if they want better results they will need to use a 5 inch backing plate with their polisher
thats the reason why i upgraded to a flex 3401 :)
I luv listening to this guy. He sounds like Ray Romano
Thanks Scott! Looks like you will be saving me about $100 on a DA once I get my finances together.
Harbor freight here I come
I'm one of those people trying to learn different things and I think I watched every video you have about detailing cars. This video really help me on what DA I can purchase for my personal use. Thanks... Do you happen to have a link for the harbor freight?
Great Videos man! I’m getting a Harbor freight Da polisher. And you said Head Muffins 😂😂😂
You really are the best! You make it so clear. I can do this. Keep doing what you do. God bless you :-)
So true - the torque10fx stalks out the same right away on curves bodykines too!!! That's why better harbor freight or fir a lot. More money the flex
So annoying though I can't even hit my e90 335 with the torque10fx
Scott, I have a Griot's 3' random orbital. I purchased this for detailing my motorcycle and getting into smaller areas. It is 120V-60Hz-2A-240W and 3500-10,000 OPM. Could I use a 6" arbor and pad with this unit for doing my car? Thanks for all your videos, Scott... Your doing a good service..
good video Scott would it be better to also have a dedicated 3" D/A for these smaller type areas? Griots has come out with a 6" gen 4 combo and you can also get the 3" D/A
In my world, the harbor freight works best with a 5" counterweight, 5" blacking plate, and 5.5" pads. Vibrations are greatly reduced.
i would agree:)...and i love your world:)
Does this PC 5" counterweight fit the HF polisher? Note that it states it is only to be used with 6" backing plate. So, ignore that an use it with a 5" backing plate? If the weight fits. I could not find a single other 5" counterweight anywhere online.
www.amazon.com/Sanding-Polishing-Counterweight-Porter-Polisher/dp/B000BLKTA4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I was also thinking about getting the whole GG 5" conversion KIT. One 5" backing plate and four 5.5" pads.
www.amazon.com/Griots-Garage-10515-Orbital-Conversion/dp/B00X608RJ2
Agreed.
I have the same stalling problem with my porter cable.. I think I will buy a HF ..and if I dont like will take it back the same day .. but it looks like it does a better job then my PC
I bought the HF the other dat ..and have to say it is AWESOME ..for the first time I have actually been able to duplicate results like I see on you tube!
How's the Harbor Freight polisher now? Is it still working? The vibration seems like a common problem with Chicago Electric tool. My Chicago Electric Reciprocating Saw
has that problem and I have to throw it away after a few times.
I not trying to disagree with you or argue just trying to figure out what would be best for me as a beginner. But if you wanted the pad to keep spinning when you come to a body line. Wouldn't a forced rotation DA be the DA polisher you want?
I just found your channel yesterday. Great vids they not like most of the normal youtube detailing channels that have a lot of crap in them.
thank you Brian..such a kind thing to say:)..i do my best to help and i also enjoy the relationships I'm building with some of my subscribers but i also get a few that think and have no problem calling me a jerk..lol..hey we can't please everyone:)...welcome to the channel and I'm grateful for your support...much love my friend:)
Thank you So much Scott. Your videos Really inspire me. I watch your content everyday.
I am sooo enjoying binge watching your videos, i have like 10 browser tabs of yours open LOL.. Just picked up a Harbor Freight Item#62862. Is ay the number because they do 3 or four that look the same except this one has the black insert in the handle. I got it for $69.99 plus 20% off (8/5/17).. This is my first Polisher so i did not want to break , as I will not use it often . Thanks Scott.
As long as the grease is "full" run the heck out of it. I've done honestly 40+ vehicles with mine. Runs like new still.
Scott, great videos! The Harbor Freight machine is similar in looks to the Porter Cable 7424. Have you tried it the PC and had the same performance with in the body lines?
I bought the Harbor Freight DA. After almost completely doing "one" 4 door 1990 cadillac the unit with compound, it threw the pad and melted it in the center. I think it is better to get a unit that does not have to be taken apart to change grease and or bearings and switch the backing plate to use. I will return it and spend more money for a unit that I do not have to modify that will be more reliable.
Sounds like user error and poor quality pads
@@dallaspaintcorrectionautod8343 I really love your videos I learn a lot of information from them! But in this particular case I was using Meguiars pads and I believe the da polisher from Harbor Freight should have their correct grease bearings Etc that somebody buying it brand new should not have to worry about replacing that before the unit overheats. I did hear you saying your video that you take them apart you replace the grease Etc. I'm very happy with the results while the polisher worked and I appreciate all the videos that you do! Thank you for getting back to me.
@@fburnie20 I understand and thank you.
I purchased mine for 50 bucks new and changing the grease and bearings cost me less than 10 dollars and about 15 minutes of my time.
So for 60 bucks and 15 minutes of my time and years of use and never a issue with destroying pads, that's a winner in my world!
Hey Scott, I used the HARBOR FREIGHT Variable speed polisher, I used the orange pad to remove the scratches and scuff mark from a dent on my old mini van. In the process I burned through the paint. Now I'm just practicing it on my old car and today was the first time i tried using a machine. So do you suggest i use the dual action polisher to remove clear coat scratches and scuff marks or should i use the same machine to get the job done.
I just bought a 2015 Black car need to remove lots of scratches and blemishes. So wanted to practice on a old car and then try the black car.
Is there any way you can put up a video of how to use the dual action polisher to remove scratches and scuff marks like on a door, and how to use the machine near the body lines on the door.
I'm about to buy 2 of these at the $49 Oct price, with the thought of having one with the 5" LC backing plate. I want to set up the other one for smaller tighter areas. How small can I go ? Do they make a 2.5 " BP the I could go with a 3 inch pad ? Or even smaller. I've seen the tiny and VERY expensive I Bird Nano machine. ALSO....Please make the mod video. I know you are very busy ( love the plane detailing and will add that to my marketing ) Much love, with your teaching I feel very comfortable starting my new biz Deluxe Vehicle Detailing and Paint Correction which became official last week !
Hi Scott, any reviews on the torq R rotary? I detail boats and wondering how it performs.
Hi Scott, Thank you for the review. I understand that you like 5' backing plates on your polishers, so would that mean you purchase the 6" DA polishers then buy 5' backing plates? which backing plates and pads do you prefer?
Awesome video. The cheap HF tool is great. I've had great success with it. Your advice is awesome. Who cares what others think - the best tool for the job wins.
HF no longer sells the maroon polisher. Have you tried the Bauer blue colored tool yet?
Thanks for the videos!
Watts= amps x volts. Therefore, you can divide watts by volts to get amps
I wish I would’ve seen this a year and a half ago haha. I spent nearly $200 on a griots G9 kit and it’s hard to keep it spinning on flat vertical surfaces 🤦♂️ plus the backing plate on it was terrible and would let the pads roll off. It turned me into a rotary man haha, but I just got the new HF Bauer like this one for $40 this week for wet sanding and it’s been really stout so I’m going to give it a try on compounding.
Wow great review i went out today and brought the HF , going to try it this week with meguiars MF pads d300 and 302 on single stage ppg black should be fun
Curious Scott if you have any experience with meguiars MF DA correction system?
Hello Scott you’re an experience detailer and what do you think of rotary polishing machine. Do you ever use this machine?
Strange they were both designed where the motor vents for cooling motor are covered when in use with the users hand.
Good video. I think the world of Griots, but I had that buffer, and I sold it because of that reason.
Love the videos , thanks for taking the time to make them 👍
Hows the GG6 with 3" pads?have enough power?
Would buying it for a small 3" option make sense?
Scott great videos, very helpful as a beginner! Have you tried their current gen3 version? Also have you tried their 5" conversion kit? Seems like a perfect setup based on your preference of 5"
Thanks scott, for making so much sense. I'm a professional detailer that wanna get better with paint correction and complete my job as quick as possible; therefore, should I train with a rotary or DA? IF so which brand would you prefer , what is your go to buffer on any vehicle? For the least amount of money? Period, THANKS SO MUCH BROTHER, YOU'RE A BLESSING ALWAYS. CEDRICK
You make a lot of sense. Thanks for another great tutorial. I'm getting the Harbor Freight piece of crap today.
Good video. If I'm a beginner wich polisher do you recommend?
Grease the main bearing then its a more quiet polisher, smoother running aswell... Every 6 months of bodyshop use, etc for all that dislike Harbor Freight over this one issue... Built tool...
After weeks of research and watching you Scott, I bought that Griot's machine as I am beginner, and yes it does slow down and stop in certain places, but I do like it. I do not have any customers yet, but I will soon. I also plan on getting the harbor fright and putting a 3 inch backing plate on it. Would you recommend changing the counter weight in it to use the 3 inch wheel.
You've made a very convincing video. Thanks
I see Harbor Freight is now charging $70 - guess they owe you a thank you!
interesting... my car has tons of lines and edges... thanks for the input.. ;)
Hey Scott
What you think about the PC 7424xp polisher
Thanks
It sucks!
Wicked awesome channel... thank you
Great videos. Awesome information. Thanks
Great vid Scott. U got a sub from me. I just literally got this 15min on the labor day special. Def waiting for that vid on the mod u described. Question, others have stated that the gear grease should be replaced to improve sound quality which some have said to improve by better than 80%? Dont know how true that is. Have u done this with your DA?
I notice this on my harbor freight too so I tried smaller pads it’s really hard to get the non flat surfaces
I took out the Chinese factory grease and put in white lithium smoothed out the harbor freight polisher and made it slightly quieter
Was this the Chicago electric “platinum” or normal ?
Thank you I'm thinking about buying a Harbor freight so thos is helpful
