I just finished Blood Meridian and can’t stop thinking about it. Thanks for posting all of these. I really appreciate your insights and the other historical information you discuss.
I love this. My PhD is in Business, however this reminds me of the gothic literature seminars I took as an undergrad that i loved. McCarthy is my favorite writer, so I relish any opportunity to gain additional insight to his work.
It's insane of how much foretelling there is in this story, but wrapped in riddle or in mysteries which can be easily researched but, most of us, just never picked up on it. It's not like it was foretold once, but many events are foretold once and again, in many ways and in many parables.
It’s said like montee. Look up 3 card Monte. A kid who went to my elementary school would hustle classmates using 3 card monte… I imagine that each time it’s brought up in BM it implies that they would set up a grift to scrounge up more debauchery $ in each town... keep up the good work man this is awesome stuff!!!!!
Now I picture the Judge on a small table in a saloon rigging the three facedown playing cards with a slight of hand as he shuffles them over and under each other.
When the judge tells the traveler story by the fire to the Glanton gang is that related to the young boy "the man" kills before walking into the final bar for his reunion with the judge? I remember one of the boy's friends says after he's been shot something to the effect of, "it's not his fault he's crazy mister, his father was hit over the head by a maniac and buried in the woods." I couldn't help but make that connection considering it ends the penultimate scene, providing some sense of closure before the final confrontation with the judge. Does anybody know if the two were meant to be connected, or just a coincidence?
Yes, he is a descendant of the traveler that the harness maker killed. Both the harness maker’s and the traveler’s descendants became killers of men, but for different reasons.
I took the Judge's meaning of "God's word is in stones, trees, and the bones of things" is that words can be false but actions are true. There is no falsehood in action, a man can say he didn't mean to shoot a man but he still shot him. God can say sacrifice your son but he made the world, there's no taking that back.
I absolutely love this series thanks so much for sharing! What are the chances of a full reading uploaded as one video? Your interpretation of the page elevates the content tenfold for me!! Ty from Essex in the uk.
If it's not too much information, where are you giving these lectures? Also I must say, your voice when you read is perfect. Its exactly how it sounds in my head.
Really fascinating lectures, I'm glad I stumbled on these! One thing that struck me was, and I might've heard it wrong, but did you say you won't have tarot in your house because of Satan? I was just confused because I had never heard that connection before.
Examining Blood Meridian, I have believed that, amongst many other intentions, McCarthy was critiquing the American obsession with guns. Most of this episode was an in depth analysis of weaponry, proving Cormac’s point?
That discussion about Judge's rejection of books, for the study of material reality, is chilling to me. It's a challenging view I don't want to accept.
Around 43 minutes what you mention the Judge referring to creation itself because the “words of God” or however he put it. To me this is an obvious allusion to Genesis, wherein the creative act of God is written in such a way “and God said…” This is a category error on the Judge’s part because creation itself isn’t the “language” of God, the “language” of God was the mechanism not the result In short I believe this is just yet another instance of the Judge filibustering in order to appear learned and maintain his position as such over those he is controlling.
Thanks to this reading, I have a nightmare of going to the toilet ever again. I guess I will be pooing out on the balcony from now on. Maybe I should have saved this comment for the last video.
the kid (answering your question) keeps talking about "freedom", yet what america was for most of it's life was anarchy. Hell, Jan 6 was just around the corner, which was anarchy.

I mean “full reading” ie audiobook style.
Thanks so much, man! If you know of anyone who might enjoy this, please share!
I'll think about a one-video full reading: kinda amazing idea!

He speaks in rock, trees, and the bones of things... this is in the context of the age of the world. The items he lists mark the passage of time.
The sheer amount of ads on these lectures makes them very difficult to follow
It's the goshdarn govmint

Freedom taken to its logical conclusion is anarchy.
Thanks!
