why would I need to cross cancel ?

I was taught not to simplify a fraction until after the answer is given . As in 4/3 × 5/4 = 20/12 ... I get a totally different final answer to this problem. Sooo.. is it standard to cross simplify before the final answer ?

Just divide the top and bottom by 4 🤔
