My way isn't as good or involved as yours, but I achieve a primitive 60s sound just from not knowing what I'm doing, lol. That will get you old-school sound.
I'm attempting this technique with pretty good results. Thanks for imparting your knowledge onto use newbies. I will say, I'm using Logic X and I just recently learned that using a regular EQ for a high pass filer on the overhead can sometimes drag things (like the snare) out of phase. I don't know why or if that's even the same with your DAW. I'm sure you know this but I'm finding it helpful to always us a linear phase EQ on any instrument that has more than one mic being used. Cheers
Good to hear! Yes, I find I run into the same problem sometimes when high passing and phase. Some say you shouldn't high pass for that reason but, I see so many people do it on YT with good results. I always find my drum mixes sound better when I do high pass certain mics on the kit. I think it's a matter of compromise sometimes especially when there isn't an obvious choice on whether to flip the phase or not. It can be a puzzle sometimes .
Hi brother, this sounds amazing! I am trying to get a kick, snare high hat and cymbal. This is my first every drum kit, but i do not want to compromise any sound. Which brands would u suggest so i can get this quest love sound, without going overboard with the price. Knowing what u know, what would u suggest i should get? J J johnson and steve jordan are my inspirations
Hey, I think the main source of those drummer's sound that you listed is the snare drum and how it's tuned. Questlove and Steve Jordan typically have their snares tuned quite high from what I hear. If you go with a 14x5 snare and tune it high you will get that sound, or better yet, you could find a smaller snare or a piccolo snare which would do that sound to the extreme.. Ludwig actually makes a Questlove signature kit (Ludwig Breakbeats) that are really tight and funky sounding drums and very affordable. They're quite small sizes but might be worth checking out since they could produce that sound if they are tuned right!

Yea, the 635a is pretty awesome. I find i'm using it more and more.
Hi Kyle, cool video man! Could you tell me something how you get the sounds into your DAW? Interface or outboard gear?
Hey, thanks! I use API 312 mic pre amps which run into an RME UFX interface.
@@kylekrysadrums thx Kyle for the reply! Do you have ext pre amps for everything?
This was fun!
Perfect drumming, slightly less HF, maybe tube EQ?
Increíble mi broooo
Como lograste afinar tu kit (bass toms snare) 😍
amazing video! thank you
Thx
Nice track / sounds
Thanks!
What hi-hat were you using for this? I love the sound.
The top cymbal is a really old 14'' Zildjian A from the 60's and the bottom is a a really cheap 14'' Rajah cymbal which is also from the 60's.
What headphones are you using to record with? Amazing sound 🙏
Thanks. The headphones are GK Ultraphones and they're amazing!

Never heard an la2a used better than here on snare.
love it. Can you do lofi
I'll try!
How is this not lofi sounding
Sounds to me a bit like the Ozone is trying to modernize something you’ve worked so hard to retro-ize lol Sounds cool, tho, and thanks for posting!
Too much wow and flutter imo
