Performance Notes
Just the right song at just the right venue to open the first show of the 2017 Fall tour. The Grateful Dead introduced “Shakedown Street” live in August of 1978, just weeks after recording it for the album of the same name, which would be released that November. The song’s theme of finding a vibrant beating heart in even the most blighted urban neighborhood - helpful hint: you just gotta poke around - might apply to many a town, but it had a special resonance for audiences in New York in the late 70s, as the city was just starting to come back from the brink of total collapse. It never failed to elicit a huge response from the crowd at Madison Square Garden on the numerous occasions the Grateful Dead played it there, and that clearly still holds true for Dead and Company.

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.
Dead & Co soundman: "how many envelope filters do you want for the guitars?" Dead: "All of them"
😂😂
Mayer just carving a path of glorious beauty with an envelope filter.
Loving the down tempo.
I didn't fully understand john Mayer's voice in terms of grateful dead songs...maybe the first few i heard weren't the best representations...but now that i have listened to a few dozen hours of live D&C...holy smokes...these guys do some incredible harmonies, vocal improv...call and response...just so cool. I think this is definitely one area where D&C shine bright!
Instablaster.
Yeah I think his voice is what makes him very different from Jerry so it can be confusing at first. But man, he kills it.
I loved to go to the Boston gardens with the band
I don’t want to seem to be making a negative comment about Jerry ; who was great and was main man of THE GRATEFUL DEAD❤️ But I feel John Mayer saved the GD! Yes he’s not “”Jerry” but, he’s added an amazing addition and seems to be well liked by Bobby! Also, adds more life to the 💀 Dead
I really like him ,he has become the best replacement that could b
My first Dead show ever! Flew down from Canada for both nights at MSG. A Shakedown opener is always killer
This is NOT Shakedown but a zombie-like mimicking of Shakedown
Very cool. ANY first show is. Wish you could have seen original, but the spirit still lingers. Didn't think i'd ever go to Dead and Company but they'll be far too close at SPAC for me to not, even tho i hate SPAC sound...
Word sister
I like how Dead and Company are performing renditions of classic Dead Songs such as Shakedown Street. It’s a bit different but its introducing the music to a whole new younger demographic of new Dead fans.
This is not a Dead show. Claiming that you went to a Dead show would not be a true statement. This is your first Dead & Co. show.
Funky, love the tempo, you can tell the rhythm devils are digging the space between beats, never gets old, and Weir is loving singing it, the company men give her special life too, thanks for posting!
Oteil is beaming at the start. He's digging it too 😁
In jazz we call that grown folk tempo 😂
This was such a great night! Love Oteil really laying into the Funk of Shakedown!!
Love all the criticism about tempo here. Now I understand. This fan base takes every song and performance personally. There seems to be sense of ownership of each song between the performers and the audience. The continual variations of each song lends to what could be an experimental experience for both. The fan comes knowing THIS show will be different. That in turn, puts no limits on expectations. When it's on, its like heaven, and most fans express it. When its off in certain fans experience, it is expressed, here in comments. Don't think it affects the musicians judgement. The improvisorial nature of the band is a main factor in what attracts their fans. My personal approach is like trying a new cannabis strain. You know it will be enjoyable experience. Its the unlimited expectation that it may take you to a place you have never been before. That's what you keep going back for. Same songs and performers........new experience expectations.
I can have the day from hell and when I listen to the Dead it reminds me of the things to be Grateful for, thanks for keeping this alive. Jumped on the bus in late 70’s. Peace to you. :)
Great music still. I love continued transformation of the music. Thanks guys. Keep it coming.
Pure magic, I'm glad I heard this, makes my day.
Thank you boys!!
Do you enjoy it more than you did two years ago?
That poke around!
John’s guitar sounds an awful lot like it did on his track “Rosie” which not coincidentally was released this very same year (2017) on The Search For Everything
YES!!!! Walk that guitar! This sound is good for you JM. Keep it funky for a while.
no question the deads are back!
They r amazing!!
good stuff man you betcha
They opened with this at the Bristow show I went to. Absolutely sick! Such an entertaining band
Well then hey there neighbor! I went to the 2016 show! I missed last years show unfortunately.
I was there behind the stage!!!
I was too! Down the road about 300 miles, but behind the stage!
Bob is grooving! Very cool.
Bobby made a great choice! John is one of 2-3 top guitar players and is soooo dedicated to any musical task!
I've been on a Vulfpeck kick recently, and this is just what the doctor ordered. These guys know how to use silence and downtempo just as cleverly as the Sleepify album did, with the added bonus of sounding better live.
Round and round 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥round👏👏👏👏👏👍
I do love John he did bring back the dead !
Can't wait to see you at the Shoreline and the Hollywood Bowl next week!
Nice I went Shorline and the Bowl in 2019. Be at the Bowl all three shows in October 😊
Porra pense numa banda do caralho. Sempre bom ter manos com a presença do Bob fazendo esse revival dessa banda incrível.
This sounds amazing at x1.25 speed
it's closer to the original @ 1.25
I know, so slow. I put it on custom @ 1.15
@@goodgulfgas I'll meet ya in the middle at 1.2. LOL
NICE
I was there!
Man who would have thought Grateful Dead and Mayer would be the perfect pair (other than folks that know way more about music than me 😂)
8:34 buuuuckle up!
Oh yea’ love this...if this doesn’t move you I don’t why lol cause it’s super😁😁😁😁👌👍👌👍👏👏👏👏✨✨✨✨🌹🕊🕊🕊
“Tell me this town ain’t got no heart”
Powabunga chilluns! Beat the funk out of that town, boys
Ian murawski is going back on his tour and we’re gonna call this tour back on track
1.15x speed brings it back to life kinda
Bad to the bone!!! Tell me this town ain’t got no heart! Best Damn Band in the Land!
I love this guys but dammmm, are they playing in slow motion???
This is around 85 bpm compared to the studio version at around 110bpm
Love the funky psychedelic vibe.
PS- I definitely ‘had too much too fast’. Lol. Still trying to recoup from the 80s and 90s (hell, and the 2000s!)
Slowdown St?
Gotta love the auto-wah pedal!
Is it auto-wah or an envelope filter?
Arvind Venkat Envelope filter
Gotta love that metal zone pedal
New to guitar…. Anyone know what type of pedal makes that funky sound?
mutron or some kind of envelope filter
You'll also hear it called an "auto wah"
electro harmonix q tron
Mayer high as hell...
J Martin yup!
I wanna feel what Mayer is feeling😂
Slow is the new fast. Deal with it!
?
John does so well I’m sure Jerry would b proud❤️🐰🐇🌹✌️☮️👽🪐🦞😘
Nice version of Shakedown
The bass slide down was the best part of the song and it always gets left out. Bummer!
Makes you appreciate Jerry so much more
John is amazing and a better vocalist then Jerry.
I like John and I know Bobby, Bill, and Mickey are all appreciative of John as Jerry’s replacement so to speak. John is an extremely talented guitarist and plays the music with a certain passionate energy
I know your stupid ass meant it as an insult but Yes because it's so amazing that it makes you go back and listen to whoever was behind this amazing song. John kills it though.
@@31mbur ?
Can someone help me understand why the tempo is so far off the original?
Ask bobby
Go watch JRAD if you want the fast tempo
That's one of the things that throws me with this band, the tempo.
@@mattpelofske4632 def Bobbies call
Cosmic Charlie
Nah mickeys the real ringleader
If this were any slower, it would sound like Shakedown Street being played backwards
I think the percussion throws everyone else off in the band. Their timing is awful
Agree 100%. I feel like i'm on candid camera. Love this song but this version is painful! Especially Bob singing it!
First heard this version while in an elevator. Right after an uptempo version of "The Girl From Ipanema".
totally agree, John. This sucks!!!!
@@song-rz6hi More so ,after ya seen it with Jerry,Keith ,Donna,&Brent...this is lame
I like his shirt too
He’s good to look at also
playback speed -> 1.25 🔥🔥
God they play so slow its crazy..that would drive me nuts
Glad they're still out there doing it, I guess, but this is probably the worst Shake I've ever heard. I've heard them all.
Maybe the dark is from your eyes
don’t tell me this town ain’t got no heart.
Dead and Co? More like Dead and slow jesus
Never before have so many, done so little, with so much.
I feel like doing a mash-up between this lugubrious Shakedown and Chopin's "Funeral March".
Interesting, I'm going to have to give that a try. I love the diversity found in us deadheads. Peace and Love
Ehhhhh...I'm not too sure here...
Jackie Greene and his band did a much better version of this song with much less equipment in St. Paul MN a few years ago.
And he kicked off his set with a great version of Bertha..
BILLY! inthe zooOOooOOne
Nice Xanex commercial soundtrack.
crawl down street
Why is is so damn slow?!
Sound so out of gas, you know? But I really do give the dead credit for continuing to burn the midnight lamp.
Tempo, tempo, tempo, boys!!!! This is the Lawrence Welk version.
they're over 60 dude be grateful for what they pump out.
Tasty
you could drive Further threw the silences between notes
yeah, you said that 16 times. Had to change my 8 to a 16 when i read Further...
Sorry, MONEY GRAB !
Elevator, third floor please
Great..one of my favorites! ..."the girl from Ipanema goes walking..."
This it's sooooo sloooooooooow
I can drive a van between the notes. Speed it up, boys!
So slow
Going around UA-cam listening to some different Shakedown’s. Got to this one. I get it; it’s cool that Bobby, Mickey and billy are still playing, but this is just all sorts of bad.
A lot of people like it - it’s a matter of opinion
I love Bob but I feel like you could take him out of the mix and only miss the odd weird squeak.
No way!
what? he is the dead
I can go to the fridge, make a sandwich, and come back-- between notes. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz...
Very good....there are so many good ones here...
now, the easy listening sound....
They need to play faster and heavier
Apparently impossible now.
andah one andah two andha three
This is funereal. Chopin's "Funeral March" Sonata No 2 in B flat minor-- is funkier.
Wow I hate this
Worst version of shakedown I've heard. Worst incarnation of the dead ever. Here's a suggestion... write something new and don't let Mayer sing ever
The divergent supermarket subsequently borrow because toy intradurally drum a a symptomatic gun. bizarre, aberrant breath
John looks so wasted ......
This sucks
unsalted mash potatoes shakedown
tf is this
Slow af. Sounds like a kid trying to learn it 😂
BINGO! The kid is not learning it; it's the wrong kid for the job.
Those drummers sound awful
Take a break...this is terrible
Way too friggin slow. How the hell can you jam out to this unless your brain is fried?
Notable only as THE worst Shakedown in the history of the band. Oh the shroomanity!
This sucks!!!
This is beyond terrible!
This shit put me to sleep. The tempo is abysmal.
Jay is way better than Billy…Mickey is 100 yrs old but still is just as good as whoever is keeping the beat… and Jay sings good too…. Idk maybe I never seen 100 shows and am talking out my ass…. Who knows
