    Thanks for coming to our special run at Wandong.
    I am glad you enjoyed your stay at wandong and had a chance of have a steer of a 5in gauge loco.
    I thought your explanation of the in and outs of the Model Engineering hobby were very good as are your explanations of the HO side of the hobby.
    You mentioned you could be attracted to large scale modelling however I know you have your fingers in a number pies and it takes a huge amount of your spare time to do these videos.
    As live steam represent a smaller section of the overall hobby maybe you could do some filming of live steam clubs on the odd occasion.
    HO is definitely the more popular section of the hobby but a lot of people in live steam are also involved in HO models and garden railways.
    Kevin Pepperell.

    I used to go there with my dad as a kid when the club was in it's infancy in the late 80s. I would have a great time exploring the creek and getting up to the top of the quarry!

    I model in HO, 'G' and 5 inch gauge which I fully enjoy. I am fortunate that we have had a 5 inch gauge railway in our family for nearly 50 years. I have various steam locomotives, NSW, Queensland and an NA. A Sydney tramcar and a radio controlled 44 the same as the ones you were driving as well as NSW freight and passenger rolling stock.

    What a wonderful video. These guys are serious engineers, even though they wouldn’t admit it. I didn’t know it was there, maybe that’s the way they like to keep it on the down low.😁

    I've known they were there for some time, but it's not actually that close to the station so you pass it quite quickly when looking from a Vlo or Sprinter, as they have time to accelerate up out of the station.
    I definitely don't have the time, skills or money to get one of these myself but I've thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the other miniature railways around Melbourne. There's quite a few!

    I had the idea that 7 1/4" and 7 1/2" gauges were the standard for this sort of thing. How did they decide on 5"? Is that an Aussie thing, or have I been misinformed?Thanks.

    • @emdB67
      @emdB67 11 місяців тому +1

      5" is a standard in many countries - except USA of course. They have 4¾" gauge instead. But 7¼" (or 7½") is more popular for carrying passengers.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 11 місяців тому

      Perhaps they were thinking of one inch to the foot giving a scale five foot gauge like the quarter inch scale and one and a quarter inch gauge that is popular in some countries being five foot gauge and being thought of as near enough to standard gauge.
      I understand the five inch gauge started in England with articles in their Model Engineering magazine , dating back to the 1890s, giving step by step articles on building five inch gauge steam locomotives to proven designs. Once the articles generated enough interest in a particular model then the model engineering companies started providing raw or finished castings to aid with the most difficult parts of a design. The magazine also provided a plan service to further encourage people to build there own model.
      Five inch gauge locomotives also have significant weight and cost savings over the various seven plus inch gauge locomotives while still allowing passenger hauling capabilities for the owner.
      Searching on UA-cam for five inch gauge live steam should show how popular the gauge is the UK.
