What the OP is saying is that in today's world, racism (and many, many other things that separate us) have been brought front-and-center by today's media and politicians. Nobody was ever "shielded" from racism ... it's just that now, in modern times in the USA, race is the new thing the politicians and media love to shove down our throats to keep us fighting amongst ourselves while they (the rich) keep running off with all the money.
