Good mourning came out on my 16th birthday. Loved “from here to infirmary” I was excited for the new record but I wasn’t ready for what I got. That record was one of the ones that really changed me. Saved me. What a great era for punk.

i got into them right before this right before this. i was probably the same grade i turned 16 that summer, and loved the cd before this was amazing, my intro to trio, but this was second, then i got the older stuff, its a great song, great meaning, great stuff. but i didn't expect this to be the change that began but like i said its raw,. thiis is where i realized "holy shit matts from my hometown what?!"
which was crazy too, but i saw the direction in crimson where they were heading. which they were trying to define themselves. i guess my shame is true, this addiction, they really defined themselves again with those b sides, like he said dan did, that there will always be that punk in him. "those lungs" was a prime example of this as a dan song, they seemed to have gotten past that whole entire era, and have matt fully back, and it shows on the new cd they sort of went with a rawness, that reminds me of this cd.

Same with me too 😊 I bled this record dry and still listen to it today. Many of the songs are staples in my playlist.

This song is absolutely one of Dan’s greats! And easily a top 3 A3 favorite of mine.
Of wow….Good Mourning is my all time favorite Alkaline Trio album. Interesting to hear Dan’s perspective

I remember when Good Mourning came out, I listened to that album non stop. It was in my car CD player for months and months and months. I would just keep letting it repeat over and over. Its all that I listened to. I would go through periods where every single song on that album (with the exception of maybe Donner Party) would be my favorite song. I don't think I've ever felt such a connection to an album as a whole.

especially the opener and closer, this song grew on me, i did love blue carolina though from dan, this is where they got bigger, but this cd kept a very raw sound. love this album as a whole, it and crimson had to grow on me. i loved the older trio but then at this point in timme, this is the older trio, lol. the new cd reminds of hints of this cd. this song when broken down it fits, but i skipped over the song this one, until damnesia. even the bass is perfect like he said.

@DexterMorganRIP Blue in the Face really got me, I felt such a connection to that song, I would play that song on guitar and sing it all the time

Long time trio fan, so it was really cool to hear from Dan so much. Interestingly I just listened to a recent podcast with Skiba. I’m about the same age as those guys and was very into NOFX, Bad Religion, and many of the fat records and epitaph bands at the time when I first heard them, around 2002. My friend had From here to infirmary and let me borrow it. I loved it. I wasn’t really into emo but they had a very punk sound but were different than all the bands I was into: darker, brooding, and district vocals - a bit more crooning and lower register. I saw them live when they were touring for good mourning. I was a bit surprised at first how different skiba’s voice sounded but I came to live that album and many enjoy the skiba rasp of that album. I met Dan a few times and he was super cool. He actually got me into a show that was sold out! I saw him coming off the bus and told him the show was sold out and that there were scalpers selling tickets. Dan hooked me up! He’s a solid musician. Cool to hear from him.

That’s a badass story dude! Dan is such a rad dude. I met him in like 2011 in Pontiac, Michigan one time. He was out smoking a cig and I literally got outta my brothers car like as it was still moving. I told Dan that not only was I an insane Alkaline Trio fan and had seen them like 5 times at that point…but I also really dug his Emergency Room album, and he absolutely lit up. Lol, it was like he knew I was a true fan. One of the coolest interactions I’ve ever had.

It's kind of funny that he talks about not playing it with the full band and only doing it solo, because this is one of my all-time favorite Dan songs and...I tend to not like the solo acoustic versions of it. 😅
